Day 4 - Carlisle to Twice Brewed, mostly along Sustrans route 72, with a slight diversion along the ‘military road’ to avoid dropping down to Haltwhistle then having to a steep climb back to our campsite ant Windshield.
We left our accommodation early after enjoying the luxury of a proper bed, warm showers and cooked food, knowing that today would have a significant number of climbs. Heading from Carlisle to Brampton the journey was initially flat but quickly changed to gradual undulating climbs and descents until we reached Brampton.
Brampton is worth spending some time in, there are plenty of facilities and places to eat. One special mention is ‘Cranston’s Food Hall’ this is a must, their hot pies are fantastic full of content and not just pastry, food sludge and air, vegetarians are also well catered for.

After leaving Brampton we met another cyclist who happily informed us “This is we’re the proper hills start”, he was not joking, two most notable climbs were the appropriately named Banks, 17% gradient and Greenhead bank at 25% . Our route took us to Lanercost Priory, one of the best preserved Cumbrian monasteries which is built partially out of stone pinched from Hadrian’s wall.

Then onto Banks Roman mile fort.

From this point the roads get quieter passing through countryside occasional farms , hamlets and plenty of climbs, till we reach Greenhead Team Room, the last fuel stop before tackling Greenhead Bank.

After pushing our bikes up most of Greenhead bank we took a detour to see more of the Roman wall near the Roman Army Museum at Greenhead:

then doubled back to the Military Road, not the original Roman road, this was built by order of General Gordon during the Jocobite uprisings. Route 72 now travels back down the valley to Haltwistle , we decided to skip this section avoiding another significant climb and travel along the busy military road to our campsite at Winshields, near the brilliantly named Twice Brewed.

Next, day 5 Winshields to Ovingham.
