Haft Seen is a traditional custom in the new year holiday of Iranian known as Nowruz. Actually it is a table setting with 7 different items which its essential items letters start with “Seen” (Yes, it’s pronounced just like the past participle of see.) “Seen” is the fifteenth letter of the Persian alphabet; meaning “The Seven Seens” in Persian a “Haft Seen” is a symbolic spread. On event of the Persian New Year, which starts 21st of March, pretty much every Iranian family sets one up at home as do shopping malls, stores and offices.

Actually every item in Haft seen is a symbol from Regeneracy, Fertility, Abundance, Wealth, etc. The common items and their symbolic definitions are as follow:
- Serkeh (Vinegar) represents age & patient
- Senjed (Dried lotus tree fruit) represents love
- Sabzeh (Wheat sprouts) represents rebirth
- Seeb (Apple) represents health & beauty
- Samanu (Sweet wheat-germ pudding) represents wealth & fertility
- Somac or Somaq (Persian spice) represents sunrise & light over coming darkness
- Seer (Garlic) represents medicine & good health
There are some items in this table setting which do not start with “seen”.
- Quran represents blessings
- Ayneh (Mirror) represents allowance & self-reflection
- Sham (Candle) represents the light of being, energy or the creative force
- Mahi (Goldfish) represents life without limits
- Sekkeh (Coin) represents prosperity
- Tukhmeh morghe rangi (Painted eggs) represents fertility
- Shirini (Sweets) represents sweetness
- Sabzi (A dish full of fresh herbs)
- Sabzi polo & mahi (Dish of herb rice & fish is traditionally served for Persian new year)
- Sheer (Milk)
- Narenj (Bitter orange)
