No. Is Karate a Chinese art? I'm sure you would answer 'No', but it originated in China. Did Korea have sword art of their own for centuries? Yes. Was is exactly like Kumdo or Kendo? No. What has evolved into Haidong Kumdo is uniquely Korean, but it is infused with Japanese and Chinese and historicially Korean approaches to sword form - so is it a copy? No. Is it 100% original? No. Is it completely unique amalgam that they can call their own? Absolutely yes. Stop your Ninppo-supremacy.

@KakuAndy haedong kumdo was created late 70's. Master who came up with it was korean kendo master. He learn some Japanese sword art, I forgot the name of style but something very similar with this haedong kumdo, pretty much he rename it and mixed with something called kichun. Its some physical meditation drills korean buddist monks do at the temple.

Therefore, too merely state Hai Dong Kumdo as a copy is as absurd as ignoring its obvious Japanese influence/heritage. Regardless of Japanese influence, this form is more dynamic than kendo as well as non-dualistic but battlefield-oriented and might more resemble a Japanese form that precursors contemporary kendo. However, its sister form, Dae Han Kumdo, does more exactly resemble kendo in style, movement, technique and purpose. So, Hai Dong must be recognized for what merit it possesses.

So, I agree it is ridiculous to deny the kendo connection, but it cannot be designated strictly as an off-shoot of kendo for it has transformed into a new entity through the korean identity past and present - which also is influenced by Chinese martial arts which were infused into korea centuries before Gumdo was established and played a remarkable foundational role in earlier forms whose influence ripple out through modern Korean MA. The pot has so many ingredients that the flavor has changed.

I completely agree with that aspect - if they cannot substantiate it, they should not propagate it. Yet, I understand the psychological state of a former colony state to validate or assert itself - perhaps even over-assertion - as it re-emerges into the world stage, but doing so without veracity only hurts any merits that do exist within the form itself. If it [the organization] were to be honest (officially) about the authorship and history, its unique identity could be refocused upon.
@DanielGyosunim

One must also remember the horrific occupation of the Japanese in Korea - which many of the documented acts (written and graphic) are ridiculously denied by Japan (officially). One must consider the effect of occupation and the oppression/eradication of national identity by forbidding culture and language. In this generation and previous, the consequences still have root today. These 3 neighbors have influenced through trade or war for centuries. Claiming full ownership is ridiculous and hostile

@nahi27 Yes, I do believe Japan got many things from Korea, I can not find any historical references for Samurang. More than likely Kee Cho of Koryo , Warriors from Baekje, or Hwarang from Shilla moved to Japan. Sword manufacturing came from goguryo dynasty for sure! I can't say they got Kendo from Korea because Kendo is so different in focus than the Korean style sword martial arts including HDGD. I'm fine to just say they are independent of each other-but they guys keep going with thier lies.
@DanielGyosunim
12 жыл бұрын
The official art history of HDGD admittedly is dubious on certain counts - but within the context of documented history. According to the HDGD history, the existence of these Samurang were a secret group and therefore would not have record to substantiate claims beyond an oral tradition passed down (that could have been fabricated), and if it were true, then they might have one up on the Shinobi on the ability to keep a secret. Regardless of the veracity of that matter, the art form is sound.
@DanielGyosunim

Korea was not without martial art forms centuries ago. Regardless of Japanese persons who own propagate their own bigotry with false claims, historically speaking it is useless to say that the Korean peninsula was defended without the use of sword forms. In fact, relics of Korean swords that prototype and pre-date japanese swords are documented and in museum. True, Koreans assert themselves aggressively in the face of belittlement from the island occupiers, but there is racism on both sides.

Yes and no. Everything you say is correct, but you leave out details of how it was developed...and an important factor in the development was the MuyeDoboTongji which is a Korean document and even if this tradition was not directly passed down, it was developed in part from Korean sword tradition gleaned from writings. This is also true about certain Japan arts having stolen Shaolin documents but having no teacher to interpret a different approach was created. All came from China essentially.

Why is he wearing Japanese kimokno, hakama and Japanese sword?
@Moonsplosion

Well, old comment, but I'll give a reply in case your still active. In all honesty, yeah, the Koreans took a lot of influences from the Japanese when it came to organizing their own martial arts. The basic truth is that Koreans HAD martial arts in the old days, they just weren't as centrally organized and well run as the Japanese. Many modern Korean martial arts have their roots in the 40s and 50s when Koreans who had studied martial arts in Japan went home and thought "Gee, sure wish we could organize this as well as they have." And they went for it. Yeah that's clearly a hakama. But there really isn't any other special Korean swords martial arts uniform. I mean, they can't exactly feasibly throw on the old soldier's outfits for their everyday training. If you showed up at a martial arts school and were like "Hey I wanna train." and they said "Cool! Now buy this intricate and expensive silk robe and cover yourself in this massive fur vest covered in metal bits and wear this conical helmet." you'd probably say, "Yeah I'm just gonna go to the Karate place down the street." Could they have come up with a uniform more culturally Korean? Probably. But who cares? Now, the sword. Does it even matter? I mean...does it? The Koreans started using the Japanese style sword like 500 years ago. Let them maintain their traditions based on it. Weaponry doesn't have a national and cultural boundary which cannot be crossed no matter what. If it did, I'm sure people would be crazy angry about all these guns all over the world when it's clear that the Europeans invented them. Utterly no one says: "Man, the Japanese Defense Force should surrender all their guns because Europe invented them." No one. Now I'm gonna get rained hate upon by all the weaboos and Japanese racists because I dared to defend Korea, and I'm not even Korean.

I know I know. As a Japanese you're very proud and you want to protect your culture. You're a good patriot for wanting to be proud of your culture. Stupid Koreans make a lot of stupid claims about Samurang and all that. Samurang is a bullshit fabrication. Even when you look in Korean-made history books and even Naver Encyclopedia there is NO mention of anything called 'Samurang' anywhere. It is a nonsense claim that every Haedong Gumdo practitioner should know about and feel a degree of shame about.. Smart Koreans know to give credit where credit is due. And most of extant Korean swordsmanship is thanks to Japanese influence. You want primary sources? Okay. The Muye Dobo Tongji. A Korean military manual published in 1790 by King Jeongjo. www.chineselongsword.com/korean.shtml This manual teaches us the following: "During the war with the Japanese pirates, Ming Dynasty Qi Ji-Quang obtained a Japanese Kage-style sword scroll and subsequently incorporated Long-Saber training for his troops. Assistance was also given to the Koreans to help them fend off the Japanese invasion. General Qi's Saber manual was later incorporated into the comprehensive Korean martial arts manual, Muye Dobo Tongji." This is telling us that YES, the katana is an invention of the Japanese. The Chinese and Koreans who had military skirmishes with Japanese pirates learned about it and wanted to FIGHT BACK, so they insisted their troops learn to fight with the katana. A JAPANESE weapon. Literally no one who is not fucking retarded and can't use google is arguing this with you. Koreans switched to the katana because it a BETTER weapon than what they were using before. I am NOT arguing with you that the hakama is not Japanese. It is Japanese. I am not arguing with you that the katana is not Japanese. It is Japanese. The Koreans are using a JAPANESE sword, and a JAPANESE uniform to attempt to protect and maintain traditional Korean methods of swordsmanship. You should be happy that the innovations of the Japanese were considered so excellent by her neighbors that they chose to adopt them. I have literally no idea why you're so angry.

Kungfu looks come from KiChun- a native Korean form of martial arts similar to kung fu. Haidong Gumdo was made from combining Shim Gumdo and Ki Chun and I suspect resurrecting sword arts from the Muye Dobo Tongji. None of which are Japanese. Kendo forms are nothing more than a draw, a couple cuts, then sheathing. HDGD forms are dynamic elaborite techniques based on large pitched battlefield sword fights, not one on one duels. Show your name and real face then we can argue like men not cowards.
