It’s funny because we only had a few brands to choose from in the 50’s until the 80’s. Mainly suave, Prell, Gee your hair smells terrific, and Breck. We all had great hair.. no blow dryers, curling irons. We literally would iron our hair with an iron if we had long hair.We would roll our hair with empty orange juice cans and sleep in them all night. My hair would keep its curl for about a week. Or usually we would put our car windows down for a quick blow dry.Personally, I think everyone’s hair looked so much healthier back then than now.Everything doesn’t have to be so technical.Im 67 and still have healthy hair (my 60 year old sis too) down to our bra straps. Our mom is 87 with a full head of hair. We only use the cheapest shampoo. Lol. Most of our friends are using ph balance, sulphate free, expensive shampoos and conditioners and they are losing their hair. It’s hair. Just keep it clean . I think people are losing their hair from over prossessing. Not from cleaning it. Just my opinion.✌🏻

With the greatest of respect Cindy, my hair and I remember those times differently. I'm between you and your sister in age, and have had long, fine, straight hair since I was 9. I was constantly fighting tangles and split ends ... I once spent 45 minutes getting the knots out of my hair. The development of conditioner in the 1970s was a game changer. I owned a blow dryer, but never used it ... after an hour of use, my hair was still wet. My hair held a curl for 10 minutes if I was lucky. I gave up on both, and have not styled or used heat on my hair ever since. Genetics play a huge part in hair health. At 64, my hair is grayer and a bit thinner than it was, and can't grow quite as long - it's only waist length, not hip length. Everyone has their own "best hair", and some need to do a lot more than just keep it clean. You and I are the lucky ones. I'm glad hair science and product formulation have come so far! I used cheap shampoos for decades, until I realized I could do much better. I make my own shampoo bars using cutting edge, pH balanced detergents, I use new conditioners that have amazing results, and I ignore marketing.

If I remember right the egg wasn’t for protein. It’s been a while since I looked this up but I remember reading that shampoo was really harsh when it first came out so some people preferred eggs because they cleaned your hair without over stripping.

You should do something similar for shampoo commercials from the 1970s, when they were starting to push "science" - all marketing. I remember one shampoo that claimed it was wonderful because it had ... placenta. Even as a teen, I was shaking my head at that one. Another one was called "Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific!", and it's only selling point was the fragrance.

But I haven’t found something that works that good either.

If putting conditioner on your scalp helps, then do it. Everyone is different. Most people only need to put conditioner on their ends because roots can get oily faster, but if you have dry scalp, conditioner can be a great help. Do whatever is best for your hair.

Prell Shampoo is really concentrated it really suds up like crazy, it is basically like dish detergent for your hair . it really does smell good but it harsh on hair. I only recommend that if your hair is like super super greasy. Got hard sulfates in it. And if you got color in your hair it really will dull it take a lot of it out not good on color treated hair. I have say Prell would be good clarifying shampoo if you don't have color in it. It does take buildup out of hair. But personally for me I go with no sulfates shampoos or conditioners.

The whole lather thing is really interesting, I use Pantene shampoo (or however its spelled idk) and it lathers a _lot._ But when I got highlights done last year (before quarantine) the hairdresser recommended that purple shampoo and it does not lather at all. It didn't feel like it was cleaning my hair so I stopped using it. She said something about the shampoo reducing brassy undertones or something? Which I assume means the slightly reddened color the parts that got dyed blonde went but like, considering I'm a dark blonde anyway it fit right in and I literally couldn't see the difference except from where the bleached bits were.
