He went out of his way to research relaxers, a hair treatment done on black hair. He is a good example of why ignorance is no longer an option. Favour Brad is a white person who actually wants to be correct on black people hair. Even if it isn’t something he does or much at all. He should’ve mentioned what kind of hair can use it and type of people usually have that kind of hair (black and mixed people). Just so people know more. So people can stop thinking that since they have curls, then it’s fine to use it.

But I do want to state that much of type 4 of hair styles and ways to treat it is influenced by black culture because we do primarily have type 4 hair

As a non POC person, I think that it was terrible and ignorant of people to tell you to relax your hair for a performance and then just get your curls back. I apologize for their absolute stupidity and offensive behavior and comments. That would be like you telling them to go to a salon or go to a drug store and put in an a difficult to roll if you have no experience permanent rod and go through the process for a part and then to simply relax their hair once the show was over. They would react like you told them to fly to Mars and ride a bicycle back. Basically it’s kind of what they are asking you to do only in opposite and they don’t get the fact that it’s your hair=your body. They should have not been so embarrassing and ignorant and instead asked you to wear a wig like they should have. I’m no hairstylist but I’m old enough to know a little about POC hair to know that you have to grow out straightened hair. It takes a long time to grow out hair. I grew out hair dye out of my hair and grew my hair out again to just below my shoulders and the process took three years. So, to tell you that was really stupid. 😢

My mom permed my hair when I was 3 and I’ve had permed hair pretty much all of my life. At first everything was fine and dandy but once I reached 15 my hair began to break off and I went from a little bit past shoulder length to chin length. My hair was fried and damaged and it was embarrassing to wear it outside. Sooooo I big chopped for the first time and after a year of getting hate comments from my family about my hair and “looking like a witch” I relaxed again and the pain I felt when my hair broke off immediately was disheartening. That was 2017 and now I’ve been natural for a year(big chop 2018) and my hair has grown so much more compared to the first big chop. I get comments occasionally from family about perming but I love my hair the way it is and I just know I’m never going back to a perm lol.

AMEN to not shaming other people for not wearing their natural hair. I am natural and it is SOOO much work! I have relaxed hair. I am a licensed cosmetologist with about 15 years of experience. Some people scalp is so sensitive they shouldn't get a relaxer due to burning, scabs, breakage etc. For others its absolutely amazing no problems hair just flourishing. @Mimiscellaneous

@HeyIt'sMe XoXo All hair gets damaged, even environmental factors can cause damage to the hair. The difference is controlled damage vs uncontrolled. Uncontrolled damage is what you are thinking of - when someone slaps a chemical in their hair (not done by a well-trained professional) and has little idea of how to properly take care of the hair now that the chemical balance has been altered. Leading to breakage, scalp burns, and thinning. Controlled damage is like a "heat trained natural" or chemical applied professionally (color, perm, or relaxer) with guidance on how to care for the hair in an altered state. It's a purposeful alteration of the disulfide bonds in the hair. The hair can be healthy, as long as it's taken care of properly. It's like fire, a fire can be bad if uncontrolled ex: forest fire. Fire can be good when it is controlled ex: campfire. Just because forest fires are bad does that mean no one should ever have a campfire? Also - ARMY! 👋🏾

I think micro locs are a better option instead of perm. No damage to the scalp and you get the luxury of straight hair styles without the chemicals. You retighten just as often as you'd get a perm every 4 to 6 weeks. But I could be biased cuz I also opted to get locs. I don't have micro locs though I have like a small medium size and I'm so glad I got them. Never taking then out

Pro tip: If you're getting a relaxer, DONT SCRATCH YOUR HAIR DURING THE DAY OF! If you scratch your scalp you can open it and the chemicals that could get into it will definitely burn so badly. Like bruh!

I can't imagine a 6 year old getting her hair relaxed. However, at the salon I go to, the is a woman who dyes and perms her 5 year old hair. She's a total pageant mom, they've even been on Toddlers and Tiaras. Everytime I see her, my eyes roll so far back, I can see behind me.

I was 4 when my grandma started taking me to get relaxers, I went natural in highschool for health reasons and have been a 3c curly girl now for a decade, before I went natural I didn't even know what my natural texture felt like! I love it but I love these transformations too these women look amazing.

4 years old??? You poor thing! Why on earth would someone relax a child's hair? Their scalp can't handle it. Also, I feel like we should teach kids to love and accept their natural texture, and then they can play with their hair when they get older.

Although I haven’t had a perm in my hair in 8 years, I still stand by the relaxer process my mother taught me: 1) 1 day to 4 hours before, grease my scalp- try not to get it on the hair, and don’t put a lot of hair grease on the scalp 2) Section hair into 4- apply the perm to the outside of each section and then choose a section to part small layers for application. *Just like natural hair for maintenance, your hair is gonna need moisturize. Your gonna need to moisturize the hair 2x as much a week to keep the hair healthy. Also don’t let ponytails be your daily hairstyle as to prevent breakage.

The second young lady RELAXED her hair. That was NOT a Texlaxer in any way shape or form. She had NO curls at all. Thats what your hair looks like after you get a GOOD relaxer and its just been washed. I liked her curls MUCH better than the result.

Her ends were straighter bc porous ends are older and they process fast. If she would’ve did them last while smoothing then she wouldn’t have had straight ends. It wasn’t damaged. In cosmetology school they teach you to apply it from the mid shaft to the porous ends and once you’re done, go back and do the roots and smooth it down to the ends. And when you leave a texturizer on the hair a little longer than the recommended time, it will completely relax the curl which it definitely relaxed her curl to a looser curl

“Curly hair can be a lot of work.” Yeah it can. Fun fact, when I was younger I used to wake up with horribly tangled hair. I genuinely hated my hair. Whenever my mom or I would brush my hair, I would feel immense pain. Curly hair is difficult to live with. I applaud anyone who’s able to manage it, cause I couldn’t. In seventh grade, I got my hair chemically straightened. It was the best decision for me, personally.

I will say it’s gotten super easy for me in adulthood now that I know what to do and what not to do. For example my mom would detangle my hair dry which is something I haven’t done since then. Or just knowing what products to use to keep it moisturized. I never thought I could manage my natural hair but it’s now a breeze
