Well, it really helped him to play in a Center minded era against players like Kareem, Moses Malone, Ewing, Robinson, Eaton, Parish, Laimbeer and with Sampson in his best years. Not to take anything away from him but every one of those players were all time top 30 greats (Laimbeer and Eaton only on defense though). It's different after that. We had a few years of PF era, few years of blended era with stretch big men and in the last 6+ years the two way guard era who can score with limitless range and good passing being the main players. We are even starting to see allot of SF, PF and C who can do this. Of course we have always had greats that don't fit this profile like, Lebron and Bird, and a few outsiders like f.x. Sikma, Laimbeer, Schrempf, Pippen, Wallace and Peja only to name a few.

Hakeem would’ve been fouled out in the first quarter if he continued to try and defend young Shaq. That’s still one of the greatest things I ever saw on a basketball court this legend in Hakeem was forced to play a more feminine position at PF against Horace cause Shaq was his daddy. Hakeem didn’t have to work as hard on the defensive end cause Grant was no threat. It’s the diesel and it’s not even close! Hakeem through his prime had the least talent on his teams compared to all the other all time greats outside of maybe Wilt and the Admiral. Hakeem and Robinson had solid role players around them in the mid 90s, with Hakeem getting just past prime Clyde and winning and Robinson getting Rodman and failing(leadership is one of Robinsons flaws along with killer instinct). Robinson was exiting prime when Duncan arrived, but Duncan was good enough to carry them. Hakeem was exiting prime when he got out of prime Drexler, out of prime Barkley and exiting prime Pippen. Hakeem's athletic prime was wasted for nearly a decade carrying scrubs.

@KOBA It's hard to say that a player who basically decided that he was going to win the scoring title and put up 71pts in the last game of the season to do so didn't have "killer instinct". He was also rightfully regarded as one of the best leaders of his time in the NBA and had served in the Navy before joining the NBA which surely prepared him better than most for how to be a leader. You were right the first time when you pointed out his lack of help, that was by far the biggest reason for him not winning a ring until Duncan got there, not his "killer intinct/leadership" or lack thereof.

@@HailKingCeezer Well there were 6 teams with worse records than the Clippers including a Dallas team that won less than half the amount of games that the Clippers did so idk how you could call them "the worst team in the league". But also like you said, you have to hit your shots regardless and scoring 71pts in the last game of the season to secure the scoring title against any team takes a substantial amount of "killer instinct" on the court. He may have been too nice idk, none of us were in their locker room or in their practices, but on the court in games he seemed to be a confident and respected leader and I think his naval career supplements that belief. Duncan never got too visibly angry with his teammates either and he won 5 rings and is rightfully considered one of the greatest leaders of all time.

I agree to some point and disagree to another. Robinson had more depth and better players for more than half of the nineties. Elliot was an All star and Strickland and Avery Johnson could have made All star or an all NBA defensive team in other era. Other solid players were Terry Cummings, Willie Anderson, Dale Ellis, Del Negro, Anthony Carr, Person, Rodman and many more. I remember San Antonio to have depth in the 90's. Hakeem had ok players, Kenny, Maxwell, Cassel and Thorpe had a good 94 playoff performance and the depth was ok that year with guys like Horry, Elie and Bullard in the rotation. But Rockets in 95 were awful. The had Drexler, all time great but well past his prime and a good role player at that time. Rockets had ok production from Cassel, Horry, Kenny and Elie but that is it. There was no depth and I've never seen such a carry job ever. Dirk was good in 2011 but not close to Hakeem in the 95 run.

People give too much credit to Shaq being too young when he faced Hakeem in the Finals and yet Kareem was Hakeems age and Hakeem was Shaq's age when Hakeem outplayed Kareem....sooo..Shaq didn't get more dominant imo. I'd take Orlando, quicker, more fluid and still stronger than everyone Shaq. Lakers Shaq just dominated old C's or scrub competition. Nothing to take away from his dominance, as he still put up monster numbers in the 90s, but the lack of big men competition is part of his "prime." He was way too heavy, less reliable, less stamina and not nearly as agile as Orlando Shaq.

Well... You had young guy, 2 years from the start of his prime, with limited experience playing against top 5 center of all time. Hakeem was in his prime with 10+ year of NBA experience and widely considered both the best defensive and offensive center in the league. Though almost nobody thought that Shaq had any real chance against Hakeem he would maybe slow him somewhat down. It was the other four of Orlando's starters that everybody thought would be way much for the Rockets. Rockets had better SG in offense but Orlando's PF, SF and PG had much more skill and talent on both sides of the floor. I think its fair to cut Shaq a big slice of slack.

Olajuwon did the most with the least. Certain people like to remark about how a certain player drug a bunch of no names (plenty of whom were all stars) to the finals but didn't win. Agree to a point but they also had solid role players and good depth in 94. Thorpe, Maxwell, Eile, Kenny and Cassel were very good players at the time. There was aging Drexler way past his prime but at least equal or greater than Maxwell in 94, and then you only had Kenny, Eile, Horry and Cassel. No depth and series agains Utah (finals team in 97 and 98) Phoenix (finals team in 93 and losing in 7 against Rockets in 94), San Antonio (considered the best team in 95, had the best record with and MVP with top 5 in points, blocks and rebounds and top 10 in steals. The "easiest" or least hard series was the finals against Orlando with 2 all stars, one borderline all star, two solid players and an ok 6th men.

People really need to see the games, not just average numbers, box score and all time lists. It tells us so little. F.x. one guy is 34th on all time scoring list, 54th on all time rebound list and 42nd on all time assist list. Sounds like a fine player. Rick Barry would prevent a Shaq, Hakeem double team. Ain't nobody would leave Rick Barry open. Bird would have to guard Baylor man and Birds defensive strength is team defense. Baylor is Dr. J before Dr. J but a way better rebounder. MJ would have to guard the great scorer, great shooter and great floor general Jerry West. On the other side Jerry West never gave up on defense and was like a mad bee. He could make shots from anywhere. Sampson and Hakeem double teams and the 37 and older Kareem would up and under them or skyhook them as if they were average defenders. Shaq out scored, rebounded, FG% Hakeem head to head and keep him under 20. David Robinson and Hakeem was dead even. He out did Ewing.

It took 3 or 4 seasons for Hakeem to develop a good passing game. Kareem and Wilt had good passing even in their rookie season. Hakeem is very good but Kareem and Wilt are above him. Wilt has the center records MPG, PPG, RPG, highest APG season, only Center to lead NBA in assists. Most rebounding titles 11. Most scoring titles Kareem most points

Well, I never saw Kareem play in his prime and I never saw Wilt or Russel play at all. According to older fans in the early 90's they were all better but said that Hakeem was better than Moses Malone and Bill Walton in their prime and that is quite a statement. That puts him at nr. 4 at least in all time Centers (Mikan doesn't count, we really can't tell). During and after Hakeem I've only seen Shaq come close. Hakeem was done in his prime in 1997 and Shaq's prime was from 98 to 03. You can argue Shaq and Hakeem at nr. 4 or 5 but I would give Hakeem a slight edge for his defense and clutch playoffs performance.

Hakeem is behind Kareem, Shaq and Wilt in scoring, rebounding (except for Shaq), championships etc. No one in their right mind thought that he was the greatest when he was still playing. Shaq was way more dominant but Shaq was lazy and got by on talent alone. The Rockets were NOT dominant during the Hakeem years. Just stop the fake imagination already!

If you took the top 8-10 players of all time, I don't think there is much difference between any of them (remember, they are all elite) except 1 thing: Teammates. Who ever got the better teammates got the titles and those are the guys who more often than not get argued as the GOAT. For example, you take away pippen and rodman, Jordan isn't winning those titles. Maybe he gets one depending on who else is there but its not a guarantee.
