Im a recent sumo convert, not because of this video though. I guess what triggered my curiosity is inquiring about their health and how they can be so active yet have so much fat. When i learned that they are built different from other big people, i started researching and began to admire their athleticism instead of just thinking of them as fat guys in thongs pushing each other. Wish i was into it sooner. Now im starting to incorporate sumo exercises like shiko into my life. I have bad knees and ankles so im hoping i can improve their health.

That tachi-ai at 4:58 is possibly the most bullet like charge I've seen in this sport in the year I've been following it. Both men barely even set before Harumafuji is immediately in Hakuho's face. For a sport known for oversized men, we often forget just how fast they can be.

Watching this makes me so sad and nostalgic. When the two great H’s matched out on senshuraku, there was more skill and technique on display in one bout, than is in professional sumo in a year these days. It had everything: the amazing technique, balance, defensive ability, footwork, body control, and power. Those two were a league above what we have now. And that’s just those two. Then there was Kakuryu, Kisenosato, Kotoshogiku, Goeido. I’m so happy to have lived and watched during the golden era of sumo, yet so sad that it’s gone. It’s crazy to think, that Harumafuji has beaten Hakuho an insane 21 times. He alone is responsible for more than 10% of all Hakuho’s losses. Goodness, those were the days.

I've been falling down a youtube sumo rabbit hole recently, and what a move at 4:28. The smaller competitor whips the bigger man around off balance and forces him out on the opposite side. It's clear that the intitial engagement between sumo wrestlers is very important, and there's so many different techniques to utilize. More people should think of matches like this when the word "sumo" comes to mind, and not "oh a big fat guy throws salt and stomps his feet while wearing a diaper". If I ever travel to Japan I'd see about attending some matches.
