The owners were mad that commissioner Peter Ueberoth, whom they chose, made some very player friendly deals, and they got hot and fired him. They wanted blood. They got one of their own to be the boss and wanted to stick it to the players. In the CBA negotiations they demanded a salary cap, and that no deal could be had without one. It was a necessity. Players ended up striking. Owners didn't think it would last. But media and fans ended up siding with players. Owners finally caved and agreed to the original terms without a cap. But later, the CBT was added as an alternative to a hard cap. Owners said this helps everyone, it keeps some high end costs lower and will force teams to regulate their salaries. It didn't quite work that way, but mostly it has kept mid-level teams from joining the deep end because of you try to spend massively and it fails, you get hit twice. The tax isn't going to keep salaries from going up. Because every time someone sets a new bar, the next player who is equitable, says I deserve more because X, and the dance is that you have to pay more than before. But where does it end?
@lovesgucci1

@@dgrblue4162 You’re talking about a salary cap but there need to be a floor salary because cheap teams feel that they don’t need to spend to win but still get money from teams that pay the luxury tax. The CBT thresholds should not be drastically changed. Its purpose is clearly stated, “competitive balance”. The threshold is $237 mill this year. The majority of the league can’t afford to go that high in the first place. And you are only taxed on the dollars you spend above that. You can’t allow the Yankees/Dodgers to have $500 million payrolls while other teams are $150 or $100. Nobody seems to comprehend that although these owners are wealthy, it is not unlimited for the small markets. Trev is a player and he wants players to make as much as possible so I get that. There has to be a balance for a good league to exist. CBT is the best of both worlds. Higher revenue teams still have the advantage since they have more to work with but once they get to the 237 cutoff it costs them more per dollar so it can’t get so out of hand.

The players don't make more money because we spend more money, we spend more money because they make more money. Sports prices have not risen at the same rate of inflation as everything else. The more they want to make, the more we have to spend. Anyone who is mad at the prices should blame the players. On the other hand, we still pay, so they are actually worth the amount they make. Baseball isn't a necessary commodity, so whatever people pay for it is what it's worth. As an economist I agree that they should get paid what they get paid. And I don't know how you can say that it doesn't matter if the Yankees make a profit this year. The two most important things in business are profitability and cash flow. Steinbrenner can't say the payroll is unsustainable if he's turning a profit. That's the definition of sustainable. It really comes down to the fact that he wants to get more stars without being taxed for it. It's that simple. The Yankees will turn a big profit YoY with the tax threshold or not. Another Yankee fan backing Chris. Hal has been so tone deaf. No Yankee fan wants to hear Hal complaining when the team hasn't been to the WS since 2009. I don't care if they made stupid decisions and are getting hit hard by CBT. Chris is right. That's not what you say to the public. Guess what, we know that. The only thing Hal should be saying and doing is preparing a championship team.

It’s an unnecessarily greedy and tone-deaf quote from Steinbrenner. But then again, who would expect anything different from that guy?

Happiest time of my life was 3 years where I had 6-10 Muay Thai fights a year. It was a constant grind, and I was always hungry and in pain. Life don’t need to be sunshine and rainbows to be happy

If baseball removes the tax then the dodgers and yankees will have zero restrictions.... how is that good for baseball? Its shocking how the NBA went from having no parody, to having total parody in just a few years. Because they figured out the cap. Baseball will lack competitiveness even more if they remove taxes. How can american sports fans think having no cap is a good thing.

The Phillies are 36 and 14 but... They haven't played a winning team since the Cincinnati series last month, spanning 9 series 😂
