In 1970 and 71 while in high school i worked at a privately owned auto body shop and auto salvage. The owner loved the late 60's and 70's ford trucks. During that time we cut wrecked trucks intwo and welded them back togeather making a good truck out of two totaled trucks. They were easy to do. And made very good trucks when finished. That was a common practice at the time. The auto makers didn't like it and lobbied to get that practiced stopped. They didn't get it outlawed to do. But made it very dificult to get the repaired vehichel titled to be used on the road again. By requiring an inspection certificate that the rebuilt automobile would be turned down for not having the correct mufler hanger. Or paint overspray. But at the same time a large portion of the work the shop did was repair major damage to new cars that were damaged during transport to the dealership. And then sold for new.

@@chalkfarmcarsquadso1664 Well, no. Because in order to warrant such a repair, you would need to compromise the passenger compartment, and that would result in a Category B write off. Category C would be just the engine compartment or the boot compartment was compromised and required extensive repairs. The only way this would be allowed here in the UK, is if the vehicle wasn't involved in an accident. So for example, if you imported a car from a country that required you to chop the thing in half. Or if you were restoring a car and needed to chop out a significant portion of the bodywork and replace it. Or if you were modifying a car extensively, such as converting it into a limousine, or shortening it, adding flares and extensions to the body for tuning etc. Crash damage requiring this type of fix is not allowed back on the road. Sure you can race it, or drive it on private land. But cat A and B write offs are not allowed back on the road.

Every time I modified a body like this, I always added a lot more spot welds and welded the seams rather than hid them with caulking like the factories did. Most body panels are made to fit together, so the robot welders can just spot weld them fast and move to the next one. If a body is carefully taken apart at the factory seams, there is very little danger it will fail later. Especially if it has better welds going back than the robot spot welders do without thinking. Of course one has to take into account some seams are meant to be crumple zones. Made to fold up and bleed of impact energy and protect the passengers inside.

In the late 1970's I worked at a new car dealership. I worked in the auto body shop part time after school cleaning up the shop once the body guys went home. A young girl had bought a brand new Camaro and wrapped it around a pole with only 1200 miles on it. Instead of totaling the car they cut it in half. The dealership found another Camaro with major front end damage and cut that one in half. They welded the two halves together and did a bunch of body work and new interior. The insurance company actually signed off on it. After they painted the car you couldn't tell it was in an accident. The young girl got the car back and I never saw it again. I always wondered what happened to it and if it lasted all this time.

It's crazy how much people overlook safety when buying used cars! 😅 Like, better check that weld work if you wanna avoid a horror story. And who doesn't love a trip down memory lane with old rides? 🚗💨

My sister had a clipped car . It had a rear window defroster in back but no way to turn it on in the front of the car. Couldn’t figure it out for the longest time .

It has butt weld on top. If pass I-car weld test then it is legal to weld. I weld both I-car and AWS D1.3 sheets steel /D1.1 under frame steel

@@dmitriykovalev5501 yes, but I'm talking about the whole thing. I've seen them with the weld outside all the way around and even the frame cut and welded back. Butchered them.

Well regardless if its illegal, i would guess if welded properly it might be ok but if not, there have been a few accidents where the car sheared in half resulting in fatalities.... 😎
