@@MsSphinx91 Technically two if you count the reprise of Moriarty when he took control of the ship to demand they find a way to release him from the computer. Sadly neither Star Fleet nor the daystrum inst. ever discovered how to do this. SIKE! They invented the mobile emitter, used in both Voyager for the ship's EMH, and DS9 for an episode where Bashir's image was to be used for the latest EMH. He was denied this honor once it was discovered he was genetically enhanced, yet he was able to maintain his position and rank in Star Fleet, despite regulations against genetically enhanced persons being allowed in Star Fleet. I've always had mixed feelings about this because it's a form of discrimination. Being genetically enhanced is not the fault of the individual and the discrimination seems cruel. I can also see that those people have advantages that would give them excessive amounts of opportunities which could lead to the sorts of things that the eugenics wars were fought over etc. So I guess Star Fleet thought Moriarty was a felonious, devious, dangerous fuckface and shouldn't be given freedom, because they never gave him the opportunity to exist on a mobile emitter to my knowledge.
@Barnesofthenorth

@@Zero11zero1zero They have to be harsh against people with genetic engineering because that's how Khan ended up coming into existence, as such they need to make sure you can't just genetically engineer a super weapon then try to say "whelp it's not their fault so they can run star fleet one day and maybe turn it into a tool for evil". My god maybe that's what happened in modern Star Trek...

Retro and. hipster at the same time, beautifully bouncing back and forth from spooky to sexy to silly. Not only merits a watch, but a re-watch. Tons of clues embedded within. Magical realism = all of those Orphic references we didn't understand: i) The right eye of Horus as a portal to Orpheus as the songwriter is ripped directly out of a careful reading of the history of philosophy and the history of Greco/Egyptian culture more generally (remember. it is Bacchus, Orpheus, Pythagoras); ii) the sordid mysteries of Abrasax, Yaldabaoth and the (highly recommended) homemade Ambrosia of Eleusis; and iii) the disappointing realization that a careful reading of the aforementioned articles of history will only lead to a deeper state of confusion if you take it all too seriously.

no one cares because this video is two years old now, but I just watched this and I'm pretty sure the dog killer thing is part of a larger metaphor for women as dogs? I mean obviously with the barking, but also the way they're viewed as possessions of these pharaohs, a lot of the specific movie clips they use, I think it felt like a dropped plot thread but was more like an atmospheric background metaphor to just solidify the themes of exploitation of women. "no one will be happy here until all the dogs are dead" just sounds way too much like some kind of thesis statement to be nothing. Also this movie is a borderline remake of mulholland drive and I'm shocked jay didn't mention it once.

Do RLM's fans actually like films and want to discuss them in the comments or do they just adopt whatever opinion Mike or Jay have and make failed attempts at humor about Rich?

I stopped this review halfway through and ate my Domino's pizza in silence while watching Under the Silver Lake. It's on Amazon Prime Video, in the correct aspect ratio, here in Canada.

I liked Under the Silver Lake if you think of all the plot points as parodies. Like how the world he's in is crazy and over the top to the point that he can rub elbows with known serial killers, and psychopaths and the movie treats it like a joke or a funny background event. Where there's always a funnier story happening that Andrew Garfield's character just couldn't give a fuck about.

Thanks for the recommendation! I had to buy a German DVD online because it isn't released in the UK. Good stuff. Reminded me strongly of the work of Daniel Clowes, especially 'Like A Velvet Glove Cast In Iron'

I think you guys maybe missed the bigger message. The LA Hollywood misogyny message is blatantly spelled out, but the bigger underlying metaphor is Garfield's realisation of what's important in his life and in a romantic relationship, with the culmination of finding what he wants in life to be truely happy. The old lady is a symbolic of an ex lover or even someone who he had had a strong connection with in the past who he may have let go due to some superficial idea about her image or sexual attraction etc. The topless bird lady see's him spy on the younger girl and she gets angry which is a clear metaphor for her jealousy as maybe an ex lover to Garfield. The following women he encounters clearly represent other relationships the character/writer/director (depending on where he has drawn these from if it's based on his personal experience or not) are all symbolic of the search for someone to find meaning with. He is superficially looking for love in all the wrong places, and his mother is calling him constantly trying to give him hints about this and point him in the right direction. After he finds that the Riley Keough character is in no way what he should be spending all his energy on, (her ascendance is symbolic basically of marriage or some other relationship status with another man which she has committed to and that is way above what he can offer at this point in his life), he watches the old VHS tape which his mother sends where the main character is confronting ultimate happiness and the fear that comes with it, because it's something she has presumably blocked herself from or been reluctant to open up to. Garfield's character has this same epiphany when watching the silent film, and realises the older woman (relationship from his past symbolically) is what he needs to be happy and goes there. Also she fully accepts him for who he is, citing his horrible smell which everyone in the film till then has not been able to tollerate. Acceptance for his personality, and he finally feels comfort and lets go of his superficial objectification he THOUGHT was so important to what he wanted in life.

Of all the things (to date) that I might not otherwise have given a second look, but for RLM--'Under the Silver Lake' really stands out :) The movie make me weirdly 'homesick' for living The L.A. Experience. Cheers!

I bought this movie while halfway through the review. I am a fan of weird films or "controversial" films and this one sounded so damn cool and interesting that, while not having some of the... baggage stuff like The House That Jack Built had (which I liked for how tonally all over the place it was) or even (apropos of this channel) the divergent views of the Suspiria remake, it sounded unique enough to be up my alley. Thanks for the vid guys!
