I think this film further fuels my belief that the more extravagant a horror film gets, particularly with it's set pieces, the less scary it becomes. IT being creepy and weird whilst trying to lure his victims in is way more disturbing than *GIANT SPIDER CLOWN* or *GIANT LUMBERJACK DEMON*
@razzle2429

Too much of the time they forget about the details as they get bigger. it's like the scene where pennywise charges in the basement while all blurry that they showed in the review. he hits the stairs and stops and it's just a pathetic little thump. It totally destroys everything you might have just felt in the scene. it would have been a lot more visceral and scary if it had a bit of a weighty crash to it. maybe even see some signs of his impact physically on the stairs just behind our fleeing protagonist for that scene instead of looking like pennywise actor feebly flopped himself on the bottom of the staircase mostly out of shot.

I finally sat down to watch this, and I'm glad it wasn't just me that noticed the kids voices were high pitched. During the underground clubhouse scene it felt like an episode of Alvin and the Chipmunks. The other part that felt weird was how often the adult cast is completely alone compared to how often the kids were together. I know there's probably some themes at play, but it felt more like they couldn't get all 6 of them on set on the same day besides the one scene in the restaurant and the end. Whereas the miniseries had them together for large sections of the runtime. I also wasn't too big a fan of Stan's letter at the end. "I killed myself because I knew you wouldn't be able to defeat him if I was still alive." In a film that's all about conquering demons (literally and figuratively) and dealing with trauma, it felt really off to celebrate Stan's suicide as though he was brave and smart to do it. His ending was literally "my friends are better off if I'm dead." I know they gave the "overcome your fears and save the day" arc to Eddie, and I don't know if Stan's letter was in the book...but there had to be a better way to do that. Or just follow the miniseries and leave it out.

The movie missed the entire core message. The reason why children were harvested is because they could "see IT" and IT expressed itself in phantasmagoric moments. The adults, the town of Derry, could NOT see, they were blinded by their own lack of imagination and cynicism. The children were able to overcome IT by harnessing their own imaginations for LOVE instead of FEAR. It wasn't NoT FeArInG Pennywise that neutered it, but having the confidence to control imagination, without allowing it to be leeched away (vis a vis cycles of abuse and trauma)

de-ageing is something they just won't get right I believe. Samuel Jackson in Captain Marvel made me cringe the entire movie...

as far as de-aging voices they did the same thing with the kid who played john connor in terminator 2

people were legitimately laughing at the old lady scene in my theater... i know this movie was meant to be scary but it was honestly one of the funniest theater experiences i've ever had.

I think Jay was unfair, not necessarily because he's wrong, but his expectations were off. He's critiquing it as a horror movie, and it's really not. It's more of a fantasy adventure. Nothing in it or the first film scared me at all. But during the first one I decided early on it's not actually horror/thriller, it's fantasy adventure. So I just watched it like I'd watch Goonies, and I loved them both. There is one thing I totally disagree with though, the idea that the scares are random or meaningless and not personal. I don't see how they got that at all. I thought this second film really expanded on how the fears are very personal to the characters. For example, Pennywise mocks Ben for being fat, but he doesn't just call him a fatty. He says inside you'll always be that little fat kid and you still know you're going to DIE ALONE. Yes, exactly, that's the REAL trauma underpinning all his anxieties about being a fatty. It wasn't about having bitch tits and beng made fun of. It was that he felt nobody would ever desire him. He felt alone and unlovable. Even as a physically fit handsome adult he still feels worthless and alone. I actually choked up a little during Ben's segments because I've felt unlovable too. Not for the exact same reason but still. It wasn't just "spooky clown to scare fat morons and dumb teens shoveling popcorn into their dumb faces".

My favourite parts were when Beverley got attacked by a goblin from the Hobbit, and when Shelob made a cameo. I also loved the very subtle nod to Nightmare on Elm Street 5. I just can't wait for the next film courtesy of New Line cinema, Austin Powers: Three hours is not enough. Hope they digitally de-age Mike Myers and the jokes from the previous installments
