I’d like to believe that most of the collectors without turntables are in the same situation that I found myself in, which was that when the vinyl bug bit me again (after a long hiatus from the 90’s when I first got into vinyl), I spent a methodical 6-8 months researching turntables to settle on a final choice, and ordering it up, all the while continuing to purchase and build upon my record collection during that whole time. Naturally, once I finally had my coveted turntable and got it setup, it was off to races with playing and enjoying my ever-growing vinyl collection 😎🤘🏼

✨️✨️✨️ Ya'll are overthinking the whole issue. They're fun.. record liners were works of art as well. I miss the whole analogue machinery and physics and lying on the floor digging all the speakers and hear the greats over and over all night. You guys find an old musician to set it up for you and hang some good speakers in the living room 😎

Records are made to be played. The issue with buying these limited number issues now is it drives up the price as they sell out. The real music lover who wants to play it, misses out.

I think Discogs has largely influenced the skyrocketing price of used records. I know several record stores that price all their used records off of whatever it’s currently selling for on Discogs, regardless of whatever the market is for that album in their area.

Im one of those 😂. Ive been purchasing records for about 8 years now ( after building a large cd collection)and have over 600 records . No turntable .For me its pure nostalgia , a hobby, collection purposes . I tend to listen to my music via cds and streaming

I met a guy first in line on RSD who arrrived at 9pm the night before. After talking he does not own a turntable. The store lets so many people in at once. Example first six people and so on. I was in the second group. When he walked out he had 50 plus records. Man was not getting them for artwork. Just wanted to sell them online for more money.

I think that people who buy records with no intention of listening to them are missing out on a key feature of the platform...

Especially if they are super rare or limited variants as that means that people who actually want to listen to the vinyl might not be able to get a copy because of someone who bought it with no intention of listening to it.

Great video, thanks. I buy vinyl specifically to listen to the music on an older physical format. CDs went through a phase where they were just “brickwalling” the sound with too much compressing and my ears couldn’t take it anymore. Vinyl for the most part opens the sound back up with the mid range.

Yeah, I was the same way. I stopped buying records in ‘98, and then got one in 2018 as part of a Kickstarter. Now I’m 1,400+ records in. 😂

I think record collecting is broken down in 3 groups 1. People that just buy everything from a particular artist. 2. People who are buying to flip thinking this is a money maker and discogs maximum value raal 3. Which is were I fall I love music and love to listen to music. And of course a TT and a setup
@TheVinylDen

That’s probably a pretty accurate way to break it down. I think there’s another category though, and that’s people that buy it only for the art. I have a friend that buys his favorite albums just to frame them and hang them on his wall.

Does it matter?? I've been buying records since '77 and I haven't had a turntable for years and I still buy used albums and I'm not gonna stop. Sounds like some jackasses want to set up litmith tests to keep out the "undesirables".

I have a number of antiquated glass telephone pole insulators that I've collected because I think they're cool, but they don't do anything but sit around my house looking cool. They have no other function that I can make use of. So, is it that some people just appreciate LPs as objects, for their aesthetic or novelty value? As someone who printed up t-shirts with some of my favorite LP label designs on them, I guess I can understand that. But, really, I tend to appreciate what's recorded in the grooves most of all. I hope folks are not "investing" in records in hopes that they'll appreciate in value someday and become valuable "collectibles." That sounds more like the people who believe that if they buy a lottery ticket they'll actually win.

It's kind of a 'gatekeepers' vs 'posers' situation. I would like to think that the vast majority of collectors don't belong to either of those camps... However, learning that 50% of people who buy records have no means to play them is pretty astounding. I'm not saying that's right or wrong... It's just hard to believe. I'd definitely like to know more about the sample they used for the survey.

A problem is that a lot of these albums are available only in limited quantities, so somebody who buys one with no intention of playing it is depriving somebody else of something they WOULD play, but they've run out. It's like somebody who collects tickets for sold-out shows, but who buys the ticket with no intention of going to the show. Somebody else is being deprived of a ticket to the show because somebody else collects tickets.

Another aspect of the statistics should include total sales. A casual buyer without a turntable may only buy a couple a year, like Taylor Swift or Noah Kahan for instance, but regular customers who buy a lot more (new, used, etc.) vinyl would tend, in my opinion to have something at home to listen to them with.

I work at a local record store and there are a lot people who buy albums and don't have turntables...and NO, most of them are not kids actually. They are grown men, married, kids, etc. I had a guy just yesterday who came in because he actually put a SPECIAL ORDER in for the new Alice In Chains 30th Aniv release. After he made the purchase he told me it was his 10th lp he had gotten and wanted me to give him some advice on a turntable to get. I think simply put most people when they decided to "Start getting into records"....the picking up the album you like is the REALLY EASY part and they jump in. Learning about turntables, stylus, receivers, preamps, speakers, etc are much more complex for someone who doesn't know anything about that stuff so they natural do the easy part first and gradually learn the more difficult stuff later. ...but I stress again, most people who are buying and don't have a turntable are not 14, 16, or 18 year old kids. At least in our area they are grown adults with families lol..

I'm surprised it's the younger people as they seem like the type who would collect lana, billie, Taylor, ariana, dua and other similar artists without owning a turntable as they only care to collect vinyl because of the pretty colors and that have limited edition variants.

I caught the record buying bug before I had a turntable. Just bought myself a turntable in December, now I'm saving for a good set of speakers. I have every intention of playing my records, I just want to invest in a good system all around that way I can enjoy it for years to come

Ian is correct. There is a very small percentage of people that with music, can take it or leave it. Streaming has nothing to do with that. Like some don’t care about sports or literature. But, as for the main topic, who cares if people are buying records without any way of playing them. As long as it supports the artists

I 100% agree! Everyone buys and consumes music differently. Thats why when this conversation was going around the VC last year I tried to stay out of it. A lot of the conversations went in a negative direction, and like I said in the video, just because Luminate’s stats say something it doesn’t necessarily mean what people think it means.

Yea, that's me. One reason is I have 2 toddlers around the house. But the main reason is I like a lot of post-metal underground Heavy Blues, Heavy Psych, Stoner and Doom rock and these guys usually only issue a couple hundred pressings. So I buy them to help support the band. I dont really believe in streaming. Part of the process though is usually you get a download code for the album of a FLAC or high quality MP3 so I just stick that on my phone, and put the unopened LP in my cabinet.

@@TheVinylDen I also have about 300 albums including all the original albums I bought mostly in the 70s and 80s. Not all of them are in good shape. Some I just cracked the cellophane and played it once and recoded to tape via a DBX process either before CDs came out or while they were still too expensive. The very first LP I ever bought was Sabbath Bloody Sabbath in 1974, and I still have the album. It looks like hell. I was 10 years old. 2 things I have managed to hold onto through out all the moving and ups and downs of life, and believe me I've lost some memories over the years but I still have all my records and all my books.

The sample size mentioned for the survey (3000+) isn't bad at all for getting a representative sample of the US. Once you pass roughly 1000 respondents, the quality of the sampling method matters more than the sample size (a survey of 1000 respondents using excellent sampling methods is more valuable than a survey of 10000 respondents using poor sampling methods). That said, I've not idea how good the methods were in this particular survey.

As you say, it doesn't matter what people do with the record as long as they are supporting the artist. Of course, it would be great if people would enjoy the music. You touched on this briefly, and that is streaming. For what it's worth, and it's not much, but I feel streaming is a horrible blight on the music industry from an artistic/artists point of view, not to mention the consumer. Anyway, thanks for your insight.

I wonder how many people are awaiting purchasing a turntable, vs. wanting to have the most elaborate and large physical package to accompany listening to an album, be it streaming, etc.
