Got one of these and on the whole works really well, pairing it with the external temperature sensor does mean temperature control is much more accurate. Only thing that lets it down for me is the smart scheduling which is basic, no option for 5+2 for example and you can only three separate temperature options in the schedule itself

Thank you very much for the review! I live in the US and have 8 radiators. I've been wanting something like this for a while now. Several years ago when we purchased this home we swapped the seized valves for new manual valves. Which helped out a lot at the time. With costs constantly increasing I've been thinking about converting them to TRV. Now with this as an option I believe this summer when the boiler is not running I have a new project 😁

Hello radiator person in the US. I’m about to become one, too, so I’m doing my rEsEaRcH. That’s when I happened on your comment. So far, I don’t see indication this came to the US market. Were you able to get your hands on it? If so, what’s your experience? Are they compatible? What’s your experience either with this or whatever other solution you may have gone for? I’ve never had radiators and this move is to a cold climate in a house I expect will have costlier utilities so any wisdom is greatly appreciated.

I was looking to add smart valves to my heating system to gain individual smart heating on a room-by-room basis. I moved into a house with the Hive smart thermostat but didn’t really want to tie myself further into this architecture by buying Hive valves. I’ve already bought into the Aqara line of products so ideally wanted to go this route. I anticipated that smart valves from third party manufactures wouldn’t talk to the Hive thermostat directly but was hoping that some smart integration through HomeKit would resolve this, sadly not and your video has confirmed the big drawback with these ‘Limiters’ as you have called them. The main problem occurs in this example: A request is made to heat a bedroom to 20˚c by the Aqara Valve. Main thermosta located in the living room is set at 21˚c now if the living room is already at 21˚c then the bedroom will not be able to achieve the desired temperature as the boiler is shut off. One option that has been suggested would be to set the temperature of the main thermostat to a higher value. However, the boiler would now run for the entire period of the schedule as the valve in the living room would have closed having reached it’s set temperature. Any cost savings would now be negated; indeed, it could end up costing more. Needless to say, I will be returning the Aqara Valve Thermostats until a more ‘joined up’ solution can be found. Ideally what is needed is to be able to turn off the Hive's thermostat functionality and simply use it as a switch to turn the boiler on/off triggered by the valves, but I don't think this is going to be on the cards anytime soon.

Can also use the aqara relay to command the boiler off and on (or just create a task to tell the nest to turn off and on) Note if your hive/nest is in your warmest location your thermostat is likely in the incorrect location (TRVs are heating limiters not heaters l, well unless you have remote control for boiler to turn on) I just got the whole lot now, m2 hub/relay for boiler control/a load of temperature sensors and 3 trvs (could do with 4 more but need to replace the valves under the trvs because they bounce when nearly shutting off (probably just replace 4 radiators with the fittings but that's probably cost more then the aqara gear I just got) amazon black Friday weekend discounts

These won’t save you money on your heating bill if the boiler is still firing to the temperature on your room stat. Whilst the initial cost is more expensive, it’s Tado all the way for me 😊

Morning dude! The boiler heat enough water to heat the radiators, the less radiators there are to heat the less energy is required at the boiler. The difference between these and the old school radiator thermostats is the scheduling via the app and the smart home functionality. I love the idea of these TRVs, but with 16 radiators in the house, it all becomes very expensive. Also, with 2 kids, most rooms are occupied at some point. What I have found though is by using Aqara thermostats in each room, I can monitor and better balance the heating throughout the house, making it more comfortable. Unfortunately, one of them keeps going offline and needs bringing closer to the hub to reconnect; so much for a zigbee mesh!

You need a hardwired zigbee device such as a light bulb or power plug and put it halfway between, battery powered devices can only be at the end of a mesh and can't relay other messages. Once you have done this you might also need to forget the thermostat and then rejoin it as some zigbee devices are sticky and won't rediscover the mesh other are fine and will happily move to better mesh nodes.

Do you think Aqara Aqara Dual Relay Module T2 can bring in same functionality as Tado system? I have Apple HomePods2 which have temperature sensor. Would that be ok to use as Thermostat or should I buy a Thermostat from Aqara, combine with Relay and TRVs and only then it will it be perfect set up? Or still Tado would be better? I am so confused. I basically want the boiler switch also be automated. I don’t like creating schedules. Dream scenario would be to just enter a room and I ask “hey siri, warm up this room to 22 deg C”. 😅 Sorry for taking your time. Would be grateful if you could help. Thanks.

I run Long Range infrared panels using shelly plug s and home assistant, where i use BroadLink RM4 with temp sensors (real time measuring) as a thermostat.

I just installed the Tado kit on my combi boiler yesterday. When they say it's an "easy" job they don't take into consideration having to fix some of the existing wiring. Learning from your install I did as much cabling as I could BEFORE attaching the devices to the wall in the cupboard.

As much as I hammed it up in the original video I was amazed at how good the instructions were, at least for moving from a nest install!

As you say these are limiters but could they be used as heaters by connecting them to home assistant, bung a HS compatible switch on the boiler (or use a compatible thermostat) to turn it off and on have a bunch of automations to control the boiler and the TRVs. This could be over simplistic verbal diarrhoea but thought it was worth asking. PS Superb video again Paul!

No, you're absolutely right, Home Assistant could react to the thermostat coming on to trigger the Smart thermostat (assuming you have one) :)

First off - great info. Many thanks! The external temperature sensor pairing in the app is something that I'm failing to find an equivilent on Hive, not sure if it doesn't exist or if my Google-Foo is poor. Does anyone know if this "external temperature sensor" can also be done in the Hive ecosystem?

Do these automatically start turning on the heat as you approach home so that it's perfect when you open the door, like Tado does? To me, that's the best thing about Tado. What I dislike about it is its proprietary radio, which does not support mesh communication and you need that tiny USB-powered base station that a lot of people overlook. They should've just gone with The ZigBee.

As a gas engineer I can’t see how these thermostats are an advantage over manual TRV’s other than you can adjust with your phone? Add in the additional cost of replacing something that doesn’t already need replacing it probably won’t save you any money. Still love your channel though 👍

Hi Paul, I would really like you to look into some technologies which are smart and suitable for flats or apartments, that are only electric. Such as IR radiators, these are possibly the most efficient, smart heating devices that you can have in an apartment or flat that has only electricity as it’s power source
