Jun: Being a bay area striper, halibut, and surf perch "SHORE BASED" fisher and educated with 3 degrees in Wildlife Biology, I'll research your question about the future of SF Bay Halibut by reviewing available published scientific facts/data on biology of SF Bay (maybe, CA) halibut and I'll get back in a week or so on what I learn from 2023 data/facts. ????""""Go Pro start recording??? """ That sounds like Elon; Fisherman's Chronicles. I always enjoy your videos; but mostly your live commentary.

Too many anglers in CA are bucket fisherman. Keep everything that is legal and stay out until limits are reached. This is why large stripers are becoming rare out here whereas in the east coast, big stripers are common. Slot limits are needed so the really big fish have to be released for spawning purposes. People need to learn how to practice catch and release every now and then especially when the freezer is already full of fish. If nothing is done, eventually the bay area will become the land of shakers for all species. I guess if that happens, there will always be stocked trout for meat hunters. I release most of the fish I catch because I love the sport of fishing and I want it to stay strong for years to come so future generations can enjoy the sport. I wish more anglers could see things in this way.

To each his own. I have no issue with a fisherman abiding by CFW regulations and keeping his day's limit.

As an east coaster, I will say the average striper is way larger but the numbers really aren't what they used to be. That fishery is declining too

Lack of water and diversion of the water flow in the delta is what ruined the striper fishing not anglers

I'm up in Sacramento area and think stripers are seeing a lot more pressure as well. It's actually interesting to see how the seemingly needed restriction on Kings in CA will affect two pretty popular species as fishing shifts over.

I'm 67 and been fishing San Francisco bay for 60 years, way to much pressure on the halibut this year, I'm thinking maybe next year lots of under size halibut, it makes me think of all the big strippers that disappeared in the early 90s and still haven't come back, that's 30 years ago, but i will say they're are more halibut in the bay than 30 years ago, let's just hope for the best. Thanks!

It’s a circus out there these days. Not just fishing but parks, trails Restaurants etc. for some strange reason a bunch of chumps who never did nothing feel compelled to do everything, ruinin it.

I don’t think halibut would even thin out but many of the big fish will take the most of hit. So I personally think most of the bigger halibut will probably be gone this year. The good thing is most halibut will breed at least 2 times before they reach a keeper size of 22” inches. Also I’ve heard that the shrimp nets catch 1,000’s of baby halibut every year. Me personally think we should go to 2 keeper that are 24” inches and that should be a nice limit with everyone still happy. That would give the halibut to breed up to 5 times before they are keeper size. Good luck to all. Be safe on the water. Tight lines

I thought I read something about discussions to lower the daily bag limit for halibut due to the salmon closure. I think this happened in the late 2000s when salmon was closed and the halibut got slammed and took several years to recover. I always thought that 10 rockfish or 10 Dungeness crab daily bag limits were too high to be sustainable given how many people fish (not just from shore but also on charters). I guess there's a reason why the halibut limit is just 3 and the striper limit is 2 (I don't know if these limits were higher 10, 20, 30 years ago). I really think it's the charters that go out multiple days of the week, whose job is to get folks on fish, that's impacting the fisheries. We're nowhere near this but you can look at other fisheries to see where it could go, eg, not just a daily bag limit but an annual bag limit with report cards.

It may come to reports cards or tagging (like with sturgeon). Not sure what the survey of halibut populations in the bay are, but obviously when another major fish is cancelled, people who want to fish will go for what is available. However, there are alternatives to fishing for bay halibut. There are several species that have no bag limit or a large limit and have big populations-- like squid, herring, flounders, sand dabs, petrale sole, sardines, anchovies, skates, brown rock crabs, purple sea urchins, etc. What are we seeing lately besides youtube bay area fishermen going out for halibut? There has to be some evangelizing of going for more populated species and making a statement as to why you're doing it.

Hell yea jun! But yea halibut and sizes will decrease within the next few years partially due to Salmon season being closed. Wouldn't doubt it if next year or the next couple they'll decrease the limit and possibly have a start and finish season for halibut.

I think what’s going to happen is California will raise the size limit and bring the max catch to 1 or 2. For the Northern Cali fishing industry. Because southern Cali wouldn’t be effective with fish closers like Bay Area.
@mythraider1

I was just going to comment that, raise the size, and limit the catch. Only way it can be sustainable.

💯 that way it’s not over fished but still keep it open season. Or have part of the season closed. Anything to save the fish💪🎣

yeah, this happened with the Seattle area salmon runs. WDFW limited catch qty to often just 1 king salmon or 2 coho, or 1&1 combo if runs overlap. And these days often there is no recreational season...like CA just implemented for 2023.

Thanks Jun for having this platform and trying to make people aware of this potentially critical issue. Don't over take is my opinion, only what you can eat. Boats are pulling in hundreds of halibuts a day according to Norcalfishreports. When CDFW calls it on the halibut (maybe not this year or the next), then what? Like you said earlier, look at the salmon and how about coppers and steelhead. And someone also mentioned stripers not being as large as 30 years ago. I understand you pay the charter to put you on fish, then that's how you justify taking the limit??...but we have to look ahead. MODERATION...if we want to have sport fishing in CA. We all know CA Gov't will happily step in to take our fun away.

Cool, hey that's my PA14-360 at 3:04-3:08 in the video! Love your content, fr MavHntr...ended my morning with a 23", 26" & 32". I'm more concerned with the commercial catch. Observed OP comm'l fisher for 2 weeks now. Each time out, he's coming back in with 25-30 H'butts! Ices 'em down in his pickup at OP launch. Fish runs can only take so much pressure before changes occur, usually for the worse. I've observed the once great runs of Puget Sound/Seattle salmon runs dwindle to almost nothing, with hardly a recreational season these days compared to the 1980'-90's heydays.

let's be honest since no one wants to say it, THE CHARTERS and party boats are the whole reason for all this... 25 man limit days every day is ridiculous... if it was just us non commercial fisherman, they would be fine... go back to a launch like alameda and people have 1 or 2 halibuts... go to berkeley and you'll see... they brag about their limits everyday

There are halibut in the bay but there are also fish out on the continental shelf. There will be fish that come into the bay to spawn and those that spawn out on the shelf. I think the numbers will decrease in the bay. It will have to as the pressure increases. There will be volunteers from the shelf that will migrate into the bay every year. They won't completely disappear. But, the number of halibut will decrease until F and G will decrease the number of fish take allowed or will give them a few years off. I would like to see something done to increase the starry flounder numbers in the bay. They were once abundant, now, you hardly see any taken.

Sounds like it’s finally time for KZitemrs to use their influences and strongly promote catch and release …. Y’all are always keeping fish , obviously you’re fans will do the same as you .. this can be avoided but I guess anything for views right ? Knowing that halis numbers will decrease and still gaffing and killing halibuts , unreal….. they closed salmon and will close halibut soon because of content like this and thousands of people trying to do the same . No wonder 💭
