It's not every day that we see the kind of weather we had recently along our coast. This presented a unique situation, so I thought I would share it. Sailing through an extra-tropical low is not the same as sailing through a tropical low (i.e., a hurricane). I have done this offshore too, mid-Pacific. And sometimes it's unavoidable. These lows are usually places of refuge and can be exploited.
The vessel's insurance company initially opposed this passage up from Baja to SF because "It was winter," they said. I assured them that winter was the best time (summer too). In Spring, the Pacific High hunkers down at a lower latitude, and like a baseball pitching machine, it hurls winds down the coast from SF to Cabo for weeks at a time. Spring is the worst time of year to push north, is what I told them.
That said, winter can be a wee bit fussy. But rest assured, the weather always changes in winter as it did on our 19-day passage. Out of those 19 days we only had ONE delay day due to weather (at Dana Point).
