this is the first and only song I ever really learned on piano as a kid. I used to play it obsessively, running through the verses on repeat, especially when I was upset or otherwise processing big feelings. I wasn't old enough to understand a lot of the verses - really understand them - but they spoke to me anyway
(of course they did, this is probably the best song ever written)
they hit a bit harder as an adult
anyway, had the urge to pull it out again today for the first time in a really long time. tried a different key than I'm used to. played around in my husky range (which to be honest I was surprised to find I had - I think it's probably a product of overusing my voice a bit this week but I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts)
this take cuts a bit abruptly. I forgot which verse I wanted to go to next. I went back and recorded a 7 min version with all the verses I know but the spontaneity of this first recording leant it something a bit deeper than the one I was trying harder to pull off. it's less polished but it's better for it.
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
