Halloween wasn't specific to Ireland, all the Celtic nations of the British Isles celebrated it. When I was a child in Scotland in the sixties the guisers (little groups of young people and kids) would go round the village disguised with their faces covered with masks. In each house they did a turn, recited a poem, sang a song ect, in exchange they were given homemade tablet and toffee apples in some homes they"d have to duck in tubs of water for apples. There was homemade shortbread and scones. The adults drank sherry and whisky and the children homemade non alcoholic ginger wine. The guisers carried turnips with candles in them and carved faces. The next day everybody ate haggis and mashed potatoes, and turnip to use up all the insides of the lanterns. Extra, toffee apples and home baking was taken to the church the day after and made into little parcels to be taken to the elderly. This is how it was for hundreds of years, a community festival. Now people celebrate the American way more.

But that's not what she said. She said it started in Ireland, and spread, as Irish people went to Scotland, England and America. Which is exactly what happened. The Irish Americans especially took the traditions, and adopted/adapted them, the dressing up, the jack-o-lanterns (which went from turnips to pumpkins) and the going from door to door (adding the trick or treat part themselves).
@90sHouseBoy

@@LFire12 I don’t think you know our history. The Irish were called Scot’s and moved from Ireland to to Scotland and the people of Scotland were called Irish and they moved to Ireland. It’s a bit confusing but if you just say Celtic people then that will make more sense. The Irish and the Scottish are one people and have flirted back and forth from Ireland and Scotland from the beginning of times. The Picts who I am a descendant of and many Picts I have in my linage all with Pictish surnames these were the original inhabitants of Scotland and Ireland and they were celts that set off to Britain and Ireland before the celts but they are of the same tribe they are early Celts and the Picts spoke Gaelic with the ogham alphabet used which was Gaelic just as the celts spoke.

It was always spooky. Samhain/Halloween was always considered to be the part of the year where the 'veil' between the worlds of the living and the dead were thinnest. All Souls (as Halloween is) was the time for ghosts and fae folk to 'cross over'. In Ireland, to this day, bonfires were lit on the hills all across the country as night fell on Halloween to help ward off anything that might not be 'friendly', and people dressed up to 'confuse' anything nasty.
