Oh Sam, sorry for the double post but just a heads up: you can delete all of the starting objects way faster by going into map settings and selecting delete all unlocked. WAY faster than deleting them all by hand, just make sure you do it before you build anything. Also, if you want to improve with custom structures, try using objects in unconventional ways (the scale tool makes this easier than before); dont just use a wall as a wall or a floor as a floor and add object on for greebling. It also helps to draw a plan for your map out beforehand. Basically, getting good at custom structures just requires practice and creativity (and you'll get more creative the more comfortable you are with the editor and pieces). Hope some of this helped.

Such a skilled map builder, this being your first infinite forge build and it having the detail and great layout it does is super impressive expecially when you compare this map to other forge builders who are more experienced with the forge itself and yet still are not capable of these amazing maps, such as myself. respect, Sam.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from doing other forms of art media, it’s to “delete your art” Are you not very happy with what you’ve created? Get rid of it. Start again. It’s not wasted time as long as you learn from your previous attempt. Most times when you completely start over on even just a piece of your project, it comes out much better because you have an idea of what not to do or a better way to do something else. There’s been plenty of times I’ve nuked parts of an art project and forced myself to do it again with the knowledge of the previous attempt.

also the budget you hit later on *might* be (not 100% sure) the dynamic object limit, since trees react to wind speed and direction might be worth going into object properties and seeing if you can turn some of those far away trees from dynamic objects to static objects and seeing if it changes anything
@thonking7193

final few tips for now is that you should probably make the killzones be on a timer rather than an outright kill (so players dont just blow up instantly if the zone clips a bit) and that you can adjust the time to morning/sunset and still have it be bright, you just need to tweak stuff such as sky light and light bounce :P super cool build! i will try to hopefully join this weekend to help you test it out 😅

I recommend watching videos along the lines of “building a Lego City”. They have great ideas when it comes to prefab foliage. They will make 3-4 different prefabs for foliage, making a couple of each, so they can place them everywhere but still give the wild and natural appearance without sacrificing the emmersion

a little tip just in case, there’s an object (whose name is escaping me currently) that’s specifically meant for scale reference, it’s a master chief model that’s t-posing and it’s the height of a character good to keep in mind for if you need to test scale in the future rather than jumping into test mode constantly loving the build so far, cheers!

in 3D modelling programs there is a modifier called shrinkwrap that usually wraps a surface or object around another's surface. That would probably be a nice addition to have something similar to that for forge pieces like grass.

12 hours is pretty good! I just finished a 2 story base with only 5 rooms and all the details and it took me just over 30 hours. Definitely a new learning curve coming from FC5. I gotta say tho, FC5 editor still tops this. But the snap tool and scaling tool for walls and floors is a massive game changer. Those 2 tools alone would make FC5 so much better. But awesome map Sam! hey Sam I also had trouble learning the forge, but I found what really helped was instead of using the coordinates to make sure the objects are level, you can change the movement snap just as you would the rotation snap degree. I usually keep my movement snap at 1', it helps a lot with alignment. But I did find it might be a bit wonky when you try to move a group of objects though. Great vid, great map!

Thank for all the time and effort that went into putting this video together and thankyou to Mrs Builds for her time and efforts too. I pretty sure that ship model is called a Saber. I like to defend your original decision by using a smaller tree pallet instead of the mountain, it allows to have more unique areas with more custom differences around the map although I totally understand what your saying about copying a whole mountain would save more time and might have even cut down on the budget too (maybe). I always really appreciate your technical advice AND emotional advice as well, they have both helped me go through the map creating process immensely. I have't had the hands on opportunity yet, but really so so keen to have a go, but if its a multiplayer map why do you need to have nav-mesh??

Honestly your lore ideas are undeniably the weakest part of all of this like the unsc protecting a covenant structure is stupid first they wouldn't do that they would demo it second they wouldn't be able make a defensive structure like this so close case it would be defend all ready and if it anything important it would be really difficult to clear it out not including the backup that would have shown up if not quickly then in the middle of base construction they wouldn't have gotten the walls done Honestly it would make more sense if it was a fourunner structure hell the lock door you used was blatantly fourunner and not covenant and the covenant would be more interested to not just glass a unsc base from above if there are fourunner relics that would be destroyed Or replace the fourunner door with a more unsc one give a room filled with unsc weapons and ammo and ammo creates it would not make much sense why the covenant would take a interest but the banished would there always interested it more weapons, ammo and useful resources and it wouldn't be the first time they raided a unsc base for stuff and the covenant vehicles are blatantly banished variets it would fit
