Very interesting experiment Matt, keep these type of videos coming. I've really enjoyed watching your progress with these great antennas :0)

Thanks Matt, interesting. I bought one of those MFJ current meters like you have about a year ago. I still haven't used it to test for CMC on my EFHW, its still sitting in its box unused. I don't have any common modes that I'm aware of. I installed a very efficient choke made by Balun Designs near my radio end of the coax. But your video has given me some interest in checking out how efficient my choke is - thanks

No Problem John! It is a fantastic piece of test eqipment and it really helped me to see what's really going on :) Thanks for watching and enjoy the MFJ and EFHW ;)

As far as I am aware the choke should be as close to the antenna feed-point as possible which makes sense, otherwise the coax between the choke and antenna feed-point will have that CMC radiating off the braid and causing potential RFI problems.

Hi Dave, I heard somewhere that the lenth of Coax before the choke can also affect SWR & CMC and 2.5m was a good dist to go for, I also wanted to get the coax to ground before choking it, thanks for watching 73 :)

Yes Dave for an HF vertical with ground radials but NOT for an end fed. The end fed design needs some coax to drive against as it acts as a counterpoise. Putting the choke where the coax enters the building is a good recommendation.

But how did it effect the overall matching of the antennas when measured at the radio ?. As the coax braid forms part of the antenna it would have some effect on the matching but I do agree it’s best to have the rf choke outside preferably before it enters the house and grounded at that point .

I did open it up after water got in. No rubber gasket used! They fill it fill of that glue stuff so can't be messed with, I just dried it out and kept it inside on the tx side 👍
