You are very welcome. The next video may be a bit of a rant. It will be about operating on HF. It will deal with; not listening, mic gain, saying QSL over and over, bogus signal reports, net operating, this is a net frequency, zero beating and operating on HF SSB like they do on VHF. I have not written the script outline. Trying to make it instructive and not over the top. Thanks, Jim

Thanks. From California to Georgia is probably 2 hops and not a difficult distance most of the time during daylight hours. With where you are, a simple dipole to start as high as you can get it, should be good into Europe and Africa. With a hex beam and small amplifier, you could be working the world on 20 meters. Next year 15 meters may be even better. 73, Jim W6LG

FWIW Jim I needed a swamping resistor in the grid circuit of my 2m amplifier, rather than the copper flashing I just used double sided PCB material with a matrix of holes at either end of the resistors. For my purposes it was fine as the amplifier still had grid tuning so I could tweak the input VSWR. Like many of us in the trade I have plenty of "exotic" loads good for the low GHz region but as you point out here most of us hobbyists can make perfectly good loads for HF and with some care up to 70cms. Thank you for making these videos, an excellent inspiration to all of us. 73

Yes, me too and thanks. I am still working on the connections at both desks. The ham stuff is really complicated. I am just about done with that desk. The computer desk is about done too. I re-did both. I tried to arrange things for a wheelchair. I made room to roll under the desks and arranged things so that I could reach them from a wheelchair. I know that wheelchair is in my future as I continue to break bones despite the Fosamax and other meds. The beam and is also almost done. I put in a new power supply and pulse width modulation controller. I have been working EU in the last few days and had contact with old friends on 20 meters. Some had been to Wolf Mountain. Thanks Alan. This has been a very difficult year for all of us. 73, Jim

Thanks Jay. It has been unreal. Some days I could not see the sun. It rained ash. It hit 113 degrees here and 135 in Death Valley. Lots of business are gone. Some shopping centers have many vacancies. The firefighters, support staff, and reporters have been amazing. Many will likely end up like the 911 heroes with long term illnesses. We need to be thinking about how to help them after this ends. Entire communities are gone. Hundreds, maybe thousands of structures burned to the ground releasing toxic gasses. The number of folks killed is unknown. This year has been the hottest ever. Last year was the hottest. The year before that set new record high temps. I reminds me of a TV show that my father worked on: Twilight Zone. Thanks Jay. Sorry about the negative answer. Things will get better. 73, Jim

@@ham-radio I'm sad to see the things that made me leave California have only gotten worse. I feared that would happen, which is part of what pushed me out. I used to have to tape over the vents on my windows, and over the cracks where the window slides in its frame to open to keep smoke out of the house when I was still there. Toni would go in and out of the house through the garage to keep from opening a door straight into the house. Meanwhile, the summers that I used to spend hiking were being spent hiding indoors from the smoke, with all the effects of reduced physical activity (other than pacing, which was literally exercise for me.) Stay safe and stay well, Jim! I really miss our chats at Valentina's. I gotta get on the air here, but after a lightning strike 30 feet from the house, I'm rethinking my antenna plans toward some wire in the attic, and maybe an inverted V hung from my flagpole when it's not lightning season. Hello Sir - As a very new ham want-to-be, I just started watching and following your channel less than a week ago. Your name and channel has also been identified in several other videos I have watched and believed you would be an excellent source to answer this potentially very serious situation. BRIEF BACKGROUND - After being heavily involved with CB in the early/mid 1970s, I very recently decided to reengage my technical fascination with RF communication and purchased an 8 watt handheld ham radio (with an upgraded Diamond antenna). Since acquiring my radio, I have been actively listening (only) to various frequencies, along with now beginning to study for my Technicians license. SITUATION: Something very serious happened a few days ago and I was curious how I should have responded if potentially called upon. I was monitoring police dispatch frequencies for a metro Detroit city when a child abduction call came over the radio (an ex spouse violently abducting a child from a daycare facility). Much to my great surprise, the situation was literally taking place less than a quarter mile from where I was located at the time. The vehicle description and license plate was broadcast. My question is, as a currently unlicensed radio holder, if the suspect's vehicle appeared in front of me (I was driving on one of the major roads through the community at the time) in addition to trying to follow the vehicle, should I have potentially contacted the police dispatch over the radio frequency I was monitoring? And if so, how? Or conversely, should I just have potentially called 911, but recognizing that this could have wasted valuable time for the call to get properly routed? Also, would my potential actions differ if I was a legally licensed amateur radio user? Pretty exciting stuff for 1.5 weeks into ham radio! This type of scenario will likely never happen again in my life, but I was genuinely conflicted, not knowing what to properly do. My gut instinct if I saw the vehicle, was to contact police dispatch over the radio and hope the law and FCC would recognize my rationale when the dust settled. As this was taking place real time, amber alert had not even been initiated. And unfortunately, I don't know the overall outcome, though amber alert was never initiated, so I presume they apprehended the individual. Thank you in advance for your guidance.

Hi, I would not try to transmit on a police frequency. Having said that, if it was life and death, and there was no other means of communications, then yes. But again, it would be a last resort. But, technically, it may not be possible to contact dispatch. Likely the input frequency is something other than where you were listening. Also, there may be some kind of restriction on the input that requires a tone, digital code or other protection. As far as following a vehicle, I would not do that either. You certainly should report the location and direction via cellphone to the police. But you are not law enforcement and getting more involved in a situation is not good. I have ham radio and a County radio to report a situation. One was a house on fire, a car accident with an injured lady and I found a guy that I knew of, lost in a snow storm. He was harmless and mentally slow. He was walking down the road in a T shirt while it was snowing. I did get him into my County vehicle and turned the heater up to high while we waited for the Sheriff Deputy to arrive. Hams with vehicles that they have modified to look like a police car is not what ham radio is about. I hope that helps. Be a good citizen but don't try to be a cop. Use the 911 system. That's what it is for. Do not transmit on government frequencies. Stick to ham bands. Go for the Extra Class License. Learn about stuff by doing and having fun. 73, Jim W6LG

Not really related but if you have moment. We spoke briefly on bonding station ground point rod to main feed AC ground. I can not dine the required gauge wire to tie them together. It is about an 80 foot run and my plan is to run 12/2 romex twisting all three to make contact. Do you think that will work? As always you are the standard.

Hi, I have been ill for about 2 weeks. And, I am having a procedure tomorrow at Kaiser. For a 20 amp AC circuit the grounding conductor is #12. For a 15 amp AC circuit the grounding conductor is #14. It is my opinion that there is no RF ground. 73, Jim W6LG
