No doubt it's probably high quality but there are two things I'd point out: (1) a spin test doesn't really show anything. How bearings behave under load is totally different from how they behave not under load or under very minimal load; (2) there isn't much wattage to be gained moving from an okay bottom bracket with good bearings to a really fantastic bottom bracket. If there were, someone would be testing power at the crank versus power at the wheel and showing measurable differences. They don't because any differences would be within margin of error. Bottom line: it's a good bottom bracket and may be worth it if your frame is poorly made/has out-of-line holes in the BB shell. Otherwise, it's probably overkill.
@GCPerformance18

yea i agree for sure, but if there is resistance compared to no resitance and easier to put down power and your not working against something that shouldnt be there then it is a plus

Good points. But consider that now people spend $3.5K (even $6k on a Factor) for a frame. What's $300 to get the best, and probably even protect your BB shell from uneven wear and loosening as a result of two independent Delrin cups retaining the bearings in alignment as you put down big watts? The only question I'd have is how well the Hambini BB can resist lateral movement, given that it is an interference fit with no threaded collar to retain it on the ND side.

Hambini's work is amazing, but the expense is because he deals in low volume and most of what you are paying for is his expertise. The Japanese bearings he uses are high quality but sensible and you could just stick with what Shimano provides and the quality will be similar. I would TOTALLY use Hambini if I had a specific need for a custom BB or a problem that only his product could rectify, but I have NEVER had any issues with Ultegra or Dura Ace BBs. All these expensive tweaks and bits and pieces is exactly why CYCLING IS THE NEW GOLF

What is most impressive about this Hambini BB is that it is strong. I am not an engineer but common sense will make you believe that the BB sustains enormous power transfer and that the part of the frame that holds the BB may not be sufficient to transfer that power without an eventual problem.

Hello, As a bike industry insider and mechanical engineer, for those that want the very best for any BB30 like this SL6, do NOT buy a Hambini bottom bracket. There are many reasons and if I started getting into the technology too deep which is the core of the development of BB30, it would be overly technical for your viewership. A general overview: 1. Weight: Hambini's BB is heavy. Weight is the enemy of bike performance. 2. Cost: Hambini BB costs 10 x's more than ABEC-3 or better replacement bearings and a small bottle of Loctite 609 for tight press or 641 with larger tolerances which has slightly higher viscosity. 3. Frame bearing bore wear aka preserving that precious and expensive SL6 bike frame: For astute observers, you will notice during the installation process that the drive side bearing bore is wiped 'twice'. Whenever a bearing is pressed into a bore there is micro wear to the bore. There's more. Due to what is called cylindrical tolerance...the tolerance stack up of Hambini BB to frame bores, if you use a micrometer to measure the non drive side bore OD, you will notice it is a smaller OD than the drive side OD of the sleeve. This is because the non drive side sleeve end OD is pushed 'twice' through the frame BB shell. What this does is not create the same level of press on the non drive side as the drive side. The non drive side bore press is less than that of standard BB30. Summary: A thread together BB30 aftermarket option is always better. An explanation for those that may appreciate it is....a thread together BB sleeve consisting of two halves allows axial pressure of bearing cups to reduce the importance of precise press tolerances. This promotes less press interference which is better for the frame long term and yet stays put....no creaking due to thrust pressure of the thread together halves. Thrust pressure immobilizes the bottom bracket within the BB shell. Pick one if you care to go aftermarket. But, here is the important point, BB30 'per its design' is fine. It doesn't need to be reinvented. Bore tolerances of that SL6 and pretty much all BB30 bores which are machined in combination are good. Much greater tolerance variation for example with PF-30 framesets because of how carbon shrinks in the mold. BB30 bearing bores are machined. BB30 replacement bearings properly installed, I suggest Loctite for most applications but not always essential, are cheap, low weight and a ten minute job for any decent bike shop tech. With clean bearing bores, Loctite, fresh bearings, "proper preload" as the Loctite sets up to ensure co-axial bore centerline, by design a BB can't creak. Creaking is due to bearing races squirming in their respective bores. If that SL6 bike creaked and it likely did, it was due to bearing failure. Ball bearings that seize within inner and outer race put undue stress on their bore press which cause the bearings to squirm in their bores and creak. The bearings extracted from that bike were trash. The owner went way beyond the life of those bearings. Bearings are cheap and a simple replacement. Also, for those interested, Ceramic bearing BB's are a waste of money. That spin test you performed...just like that bogus pricey big jockey wheel in the rear derailleur, both amount to noise in the cosmos. Nebula. Means nothing on the bike for any rider that has a FTP of 200w or more aka just about anybody who would own a SL6. Again, I don't expect people to understand everything I wrote. The bike industry is fraught with ripoffs and Hambini is a latter day PT Barnum. A sucker is born every minute. And lastly, for those that follow the bike industry, most big bike brands are making their way back to BSA. The new SL7 is BSA aka english threaded BB. The reason is, most can't handle the simple task of maintaining press fit. What causes press fit bearings to fail even sooner? Improper crank pre-load. As common as the day is long. Set up is simple yet essential.

Interesting information! My FTP is 235, 3.5w/kg, though I don’t race, I am still interested in marginal gains, because I’m 57 and not getting younger, I want to extract or save every watt possible. I currently ride SWorks Aethos with Campag SR EPS and I use the standard BB delivered with the drivetrain. I would think a full through and through BB might provide more stiffness and as well, better alignment for a smoother crank rotation? Won’t this help when I do century rides or climbing?

yea I have no problem with removing bearings and replacing them but it honestly wasn't that, it was so constant down here in south Florida where I am right next to the ocean and it is so humid and salty in the air that these cranks were getting wrecked by salt and corrosion and drying out very quickly, they always advertised as sealed bb and headset but moisture always makes its way into there...... causing them to rust and creak earlier then usual...... poor maintained from the customer but also I wouldn't expect them to drop it off for a bb clean every 3 months for a 10k bike....... I hear u loud and clear and there are other bb that we used in the past like wheels manufacturer that worked well for 65 dollars or even jsut stock bb30 bearings and people maintained them right....... but this is a nice bb, I knwo the spin test means nothing as people say...... but thats what people wanna see, its like a loud exhaust on a car.... the louder it is doesnt mean it is faster, just people want to hear it for some reason ny no means am I a mechanical engineer I just got to see a lot of consumers with the same product and I got a real world experiment with real test subjects and got to see a constant variable..... and I mean a ton of them because the sl6 and sl5 and sl4 were all osbb bb 30 so it happened more and more and specialized changed this bottom bracket for the bike multiple times in terms of the cups they used from plastic with epoxy.... to metal cups with c clips and so on..... jsut my take but thank you for sharing. maybe people jsut buy hambini because they like his channel and want to support him, idk

dude, your yt a/c is open only this august 2021, not sure you understand why ambini has come up with making his own bb. maybe you should binge watch all his videos showing how manufacturers lack of quality in their design and quality controls affect the install and performance of cranks many times. good if at the end these companies rethink which bb they will install on their frame to have a properly fonctionning crank which is finally quite basic when you buy a super expensive frame.
@lukewalker1051

@@nr619 You have no idea what you are talking about. This will likely go way over your head, but there is a sort of poetic justice in life. Clueless people end up supporting clueless enterprises like Hambini's assault on the bike industry. I hope you buy a boat load of Hambini bottom brackets because dumb people should empty their wallets needlessly...lol. Call it entertainment for people that understand value aka cost/benefit and don't waste their money. Hambini is a fraud. He throws bike manufacturers under the bus by denigrating their tolerances to promote his heavy, expensive bottom bracket that does more harm to the frame by wiping the drive side bearing twice upon install. Buy stock in his company, I encourage it. Meanwhile, the bike industry laughs as you.

@@GCPerformance18 That is what I gathered from his videos,.yes. Also, the thinner/softer the material, the less accurate a machine will be. These tolerances are only achievable manually. Just to clarify - a lathe is a machine, and it is rotating the work piece. I meant the bb-shells are done in one pass, without turning the aluminium block over and re-fastening it. Which would assure the alignment gets compromised. And a one pass machining is high level craft.

One thing is I don’t think the bearing experiences omnidirectional radial load with a crank installed like you said with the puller. So bearings wouldn’t be that rough when a crank is installed because the force the puller exerts is much greater in all directions.

Yo GC, back again with another great video. Any word from the customer on how this BB is holding in place with grease? I just got my hands on a Hambini BB for my SL6. From what I have found online, a tiny bit of grease like you have shown is a good starting point. If there's movement after greasing, you can try a dry install. If it's creaking and/or has movement after a dry install you need Loctite 641 with activator. It seems like Specialized's BB shell tolerances are pretty good compared to other manufacturers.
@GCPerformance18
2 жыл бұрын
It was working great, no issues from when I had it installed but the customer brought it back in after a couple months for a service and i removed it and just did the loctite to make it right so everything was by the book and no issues could happen. The customer saw the video and asked me about it and instead of pleading my case. Just wanted to do what was right and that way he had peace of mind

Interesting how correct engineering standards are jettisoned when it comes to the humble bicycle. A pressfit should be fitted dry. At best the grease will simply be squeezed out as the bb is pressed home. It was mentioned here you don’t want metal to metal! That’s exactly what you do want! if you are relying on grease to prevent creaking the bb bore is incorrect and all the grease will do is lubricate the movement thus exacerbating the problem. Such shoddy fitting would not cut it in an industrial setting.

The Hambini website instructions (specifically section 6) covers the use of "retaining compound"
@ThePaulKat
2 жыл бұрын
@@clarkdavison4766 a retaining compound such as Loctite would be used if the tolerance was slack or as I believe in Hambini’s case if unsure of the tolerance of the bore, belt and braces if you like. If the tolerance is correct (Hambini bb will definitely be correct) in the bore the Loctite will simply be displaced upon fitment thus rendered redundant, if the frame bore has ovality as most moulded Carbon bores do then the Loctite will do its business.

But it protrudes so much on the drive side. Usually all BBs are flat there. Doesb't this ruin the chainline and everything?
@GCPerformance18
2 жыл бұрын
no because this bb works with the crank its being installed on, so in this instance the bb sticks out and the crank is more flat against the bike, where as the orignial osbb for the stock bike with only bearings installed and the sworks power meter crank, the bearings are flush on the frame but the spider and cranks arms have huge flare outs to match similar to the shimano chainline

Bikes with electronic shifting , "transmission " derailleurs , perfect frames and now space age quality bottom brackets , have created a "super bike " category in cycling . i suppose if you can afford it go for it , but the prices are absurd.

Noob question: The old OSBB bottom bracket meant the S-Works cranks were flush against the frame. The new bottom bracket for 24 mm spindles have two big lips on each side on the outside of the frame. Does this mean the distance between the pedals is bigger on 24 mm cranks than 30 mm cranks, or is the mentioned difference in spindle length compensated by different outward angles in the crank arms to make sure pedal-to-pedal distance is the same?
@pmcqueen

Q factor should be the same or close between the two cranks by design. This design allows for a wider outboard bearing placement.
