While visiting family in North Carolina over the Veterans Day weekend, I took one day to pay a visit to Hamlet and take in the CSX activity there.
In addition to a major yard facility (which I didn't visit this trip) and an historic station, Hamlet marks the intersection of two CSX mainlines; one running east from Charlotte to Wilmington, and the other down from Raleigh to Columbia, SC. It was in the middle of this level crossing where I set up for the day.
While I missed the opportunity to record a coal train that was banging across the diamond on its way to Wilmington when I arrived, it wasn't long after I set up that the next train appeared, a solid grain train led by SD70ACe 4844, C40-8W 7347, and SD40-2 8162. The train has traveled east from Charlotte and is curving around to head into the yard. The opening still photo is of the stone bridge carrying the main line to Wilmington over Louis Breeden Boulevard, still wearing the name of its original owner.
I was amazed at the number of fallen-flag cars I saw on this trip. In this train, watch for Chicago & North Western (both green and white), Chessie System, and Family Lines with both SCL and L&N sublettering.
