Took the doggos out for a quick overnight in the Catskill Mountains, at Echo Lake! This trip was filmed in November 2023, and in the following week my hard drive failed and lost the footage. Last weekend I decided to take a chance out of boredom and open up the old HDD, and somehow got it working again with this footage still on it! So I'm just now getting to upload it, while it's 90 degrees outside!
This being my first time camping in New York, it was a completely new area to me and I definitely noticed how challenging it was to hike the big inclines and hills. It was a busy Saturday with lots of day hikers, so I had to park at the overflow parking down the road. The hike leads from the trailhead up past the ruins of the Overlook Mountain House, which was once a vibrant hotel and vacation destination throughout the late 1800's and early 1900's. It is a tough but short climb. Once past the ruins, the trail spurs off towards Echo Lake. I found Echo Lake to be very peaceful, however I can see it's easy access being a party spot. Probably not somewhere I'd want to go again on a busy weekend, but hey, sometimes that's all you can do! Temps were cold overnight, but I slept warm in my Dutchware Chameleon and Hammock Gear quilts, and the dogs each slept in their own sleeping bags on a Nemo closed cell foam pad. We had some light rain overnight mixed with some sleet, and the new Dutchware Xenon Bonded Winter Wide Tarp kept us dry and blocked the variable winds well. The morning brought beautiful sunshine and a bold black bear into the camps of neighboring backpackers. We completed the hike with a stop at the fire tower on top of Overlook Mountain, with beautiful yet chilling November views all around. You could tell winter was on its way. Overall, great trip, especially for only being 2.5 hours away from where I now live!
