Daisy, I'm a long-time subscriber and a hammocker. I know you picked the Hummingbird Single because it's the lightest on the market. But it's only that light because it's so much smaller than most hammocks. In order to lay flat in a gathered - end hammock, you have to lay in it diagonally... head on one side of center, feet on the other. A too-short hammock doesn't allow you to do that. The sides push against you the entire time. You may wake up feeling like your legs were bent backwards like a banana all night. That destroys the reason people like me love hammocks so much: the on-trail sleep quality. An adult your height needs a hammock at least 9.5 ft long to prevent that. Preferably, it would be in the 10-11 ft range. The Hummingbird Single is only 8.5 ft. I think you may need a bigger hammock.

The hammock is a little short and narrow for a good diagonal lay, and really needs a structural ridgeline. The superiorgear elite is an 11 foot hammock that weighs 30 oz with the underquilt built in (also bugnet) - basically the same as an xmid pro 1 with a 25 inch wide pad. I love the dutchware asym tarp, but that needs to get pitched low in bad weather. Ask me how I know....

one thing that helped me with the hummingbird bug net was attaching a ridgeline to the hammock and letting the net be supported by it rather than tying it to the tree. It also made it easier to get the right sag in the hammock. It wasn't as high up off the hammock but the ease of use was a worthwhile trade-off for me at least.

Daisy, hook up with someone who has been hammock camping for a while and can give you some pointers. There is a learning curve and you're at the beginning of finding out all the things that can go wrong. The ultralight hammocks are also more delicate material, and the way you have it hung so tight could really stress the material and cause a failure. That's also the reason it felt so flippy.

Hammock laying most comfortable-- ALWAYS lay slightly diagonal because fabrics have the most give in diagonal direction!! You'll enjoy sleeping as it would stretch along with your movements. Other wise, the "banana laying" is not recommended because it can sometimes be a tad hard on your body. Also, when the hammock feels tight getting in/ out, you have to let out more rope. With the right hanging, everything is super comfortable! 🎉 HAPpy Trails.

Hello Dixie! Congrats on your baby and getting back out there x I love that you're trying Terraventures - I love them - and now I hike in Topo Pursuits as I wanted wider toe box and zero drop and they are amazing. They last well. I remember on one of your videos about shoes, you had an experience of the fabric tearing around the ankle area - this happened on my Pursuits and I worked out why - I use lock laces and where I was being lazy and not loosening them off enough, I would stretch the shoe and that caused the fabric to slowly tear. Took me a while to work out why, but I knew it was most likely something I was doing, and true, it was! So wanted to share should that resonate with your experience. Now I make sure I loosen off my lock laces a lot more, and not overstretch the shoe. As a fix, I bought fabric glue and slathered it over the tear, and it has stopped it. Scotland sounds amazing and I wish you and your husband a little bub a safe and amazing trip. Can't wait to see your video of that experience. Cheers E

Gotta say, I've been hammock camping since 2009/10 timeframe, and in all that time, and even today, the most anxious moment is that first moment of sitting down in the hammock. Also, the only real reason for having the foot end higher than the head end is to keep you from sliding down towards your feet. But the difference is really only by about 4 inches or so. And it's not really necessary.

It is funny....that when people try to go to hammocks the go to the cheep and "light" type. If you want to have a quality sleep in a hammock you got to get one that is been made for the sole extent of a quality sleep. This means you will spend some $$$. Hammocks are like cars. You can get a yugo that just barely can be called a hammock/car. Then there are Fords and chevys, the get the job done, however, they have limits. Then there are the high end limos and stuff.....those would be the Dream Hammocks. Yes, you will pay a little bit of $$ for them, you will be hard pressed to find much better quality, Last of all,,,,, you got to reasearch the proper way to hang a hammock and how to lay in one. Shug Emery has vid posts that a very good on the how to. If your hammock cost less than $100 good bet that it "sucks".

Put that yellow pad in the hammock: it gives it room & structure. It does get slightly more tippy. A Yukon Outfitters 4 point tarp can get those quick line tensioners & little caribeaners at each end. All it will need is two long z packs carbon stakes. I am not sure what tarp Hummingbird has. Hummingbird has a bit longer hammock for laying without the insulated mummy pad.

I sleep in hammock, never used a bug net, spray Deet on my arms & face and spray permethrin on my quilt. I have a mosquito head net (just in case) never used it. Also, the assym tarp is for people sleeping diagonal on the hammock. I use a diamond shaped tarp 9x11 because I sleep straight in my hammock, I am a side sleeper so I turn about 45 degrees on my side and the pressure from the hammock makes me feel like I am sleeping on my side. I nearly forgot, I have a 55gal contractors bag I slip over my quilt like a bivy bag during rain storms to keep spray off my quilt, comes up to my shoulders.

Pause: first I like their Button Links. Second: usually once the net is on it can stay. I run each end of the line up to the tarp above rather than have alot of cord...and the glow Hummingbird line tensioner is nice to push through the end of the tarp above, then bring back down around the line to adjust the net to a suitable height. The zipper on that net can get a bit annoying, but that said I still use it because it is the lightest. (Alternately Exped makes a net with a bunch of pullouts & stuff to pull it away.) A thermarest neo air x-lite womens mummy pad is about perfect size & insulation most of tge year.

If I may recommend a couple of pieces of gear for this lightweight setup. Outdoor Vitals Aerie quilt (use it to completely wrap around the hammock pod/cocoon style), and Yama Gear 8.5x8.5 square silpoly tarp. Both are excellent pieces of gear that I have used for a similar hammock setup for many years. If you decide to try this setup, remember to stuff a puffy jacket (or similar) in the toe area. There will likely be a small air gap at that end. P.S. Setting up your quilt pod style allows you to eliminate the (frustrating) foam pad. Also saves weight over a traditional top guilt / under quilt setup.

I have a better way....and I'm local. Your hammock is still not tight enough. Lightest doesn't always equal quality and longevity. The material used is more important.
