I've raised baby hamsters in the past and its completely okay for the babies to be in a smaller cage when they're that tiny in my personal experience. The bedding we give our hamsters is not the same thing as what hamsters would have in the wild and is much more prone to caving in. Tiny bodies aren't yet strong enough to burrow for themselves, which can cause issues if the bedding is too deep. One way to create deeper bedding thats safe, is to build Popsicle stick structures so that when the mother burrows through them, its more like a tunnel and less likely to cave in than loose bedding freely sitting in the cage. Smaller cages also encourage fearful hamsters to become more secure in their environment, as everything is closer together and much more easy to access. Baby hamsters and their mothers are fine in smaller cages and I'd argue its better than a large cage because it can be stressful for a mother hamster to raise her babies. Once the babies reach 4-6 weeks (and entirely weaned), you can transition them to a more appropriate adult size cage, along with the mother. Larger cages are great for preventing boredom, but trust me, the mother is very occupied taking care of her babies. She's not stressed or bored in there. I feel like people commenting saying they need 6 inches of bedding and the minimum requirement fail to recognize the difference between a regular hamster, and a mother raising infant hamsters. I also feel like some of the people commenting this have never actually raised baby hamsters. Its important to tailor the care needs to the individual hamster. One size does not fit all. It is very situational. The minimum requirement is best for healthy adults and baby hamsters that are at least 4-6 weeks old (6 weeks is more realistic, as they're still a bit clumsy and very tiny at 4 weeks). This is coming from someone with actual experience raising baby hamsters. I cant stress enough, the importance of individualized care.

Aright here we go, The cage is actually supposed to be small because if the cage is too large, the baby hamster can get lost and possibly die as well. You can’t put too much bedding since hamster babies are too weak to burrow so If bedding collapses, than that’s not good. To anyone who is unaware, in the beginning of the video there seems to be soft store bought nesting material ( not okay for hamsters or any rodent) instead put some shredded paper towels or paper bedding is fine, also regarding that the cage is too small and more bedding should be provided ( this is okay for the young hamsters for now but must be upgraded to at least a 450 square inch cage and six inches of bedding. Also please keep the hamsters separated (father and mother) they are solitary species. I could add more but that is just the gist of things. Just a friendly reminder, Despite dwarf hamsters not being solitary, it is STRONGLY recommended that you keep your hamsters in separate cages. Also, the cages are WAY WAY too small. 450 ( I think) square inches of floorspace NOT INCLUDING LEVELS is the bare minimum requirements for each hamsters for their cage. Any kind of cotton is unsafe for hamsters and there should be 6 inches of bedding in a cage. Also, if you still want to keep your hamsters together, then you need to multiply everything in the cage PER HAMSTER. Lets say you have 3 hamsters in one cage. You need 3 wheels, 3 food bowls, 3 water bottles, 3 chews, 3 hideaways and 3 toys. I've bred and raised multiple litters of hamsters and if you want to keep your hamsters alive and healthy, I highly recommend doing a bit of research to make sure your fur babies are as happy as can be. ;)

A small cage is better for newborns. They learn to trust their environment because they can't go far. And it's also easier for the mother because she can take care of her kids without having to travel too far. She also won't get bored of a small cage because she's busy with her kids. But of course, once they are older (4-6 weeks), they need to be separated into their own cages. I think the amount of bedding should be a bit more, but it's fine because babies can't really burrow safely anyway. Either way, much better than being raised in a pet mill..

You are lucky the father didn’t decide to eat the babies. They don’t care if it’s their own this is why you never house hamsters together under any circumstance. This is why the mother and father fight.

Hey ima a hamster owner and just came to say that hamsters are solitary and should never be kept together as hamsters only mate and them leave again Also it is best to. Make your hamsters forage for food instead of giving them a bowl Also your cage has to be at least 450 square inches at minimum I hope you don’t find this offensive I just want help that’s all!!!

I'm sorry, if i'm wrong, but i just can't get over how small cookie and creams cage is. Especially for housing two dwarfs together. Also, never put the father in, just no. I hope you could provide them with a bigger cage soon!

one tip is to get rid of the critter tail cage and go for a bigger cage. i realized and did my research that the critter tail cages are not suitable. i just made a bin cage out of a storage bin and my syrian hamster loves it. if you want, u could attach the critter tail cage to the storage bin cage using a critter tail tube and add more shavings and small hideouts for the hamsters and their mother!
