It always vex's me that a mass produced factory guitar can be worth more money than a handmade instrument made with love and care, its all down to that name on the headstock!

It's not surprising really, how do you value a handmade/low volume/one off instrument when there aren't established market values/sold prices in place? It's a win for the second hand purchaser if it's exactly what they want, and as for the person who bought it new for £££££ , tough luck really!

This is all I could find. From the Guild of American Luthiers: "Robert Deacon Six-year Guild member Bob Deacon has been working wood for thirty years. As a young classical guitarist he discovered Irving Sloane’s book and decided to have a go at building a classical guitar. The guitar turned out to be successful, and the process proved addictive.▪ bio current as of 2004". Not to be confused with Jim Deacon guitars, which was the brand name of SMIRA (Scottish Musical Instrument Retailers Association) who sourced the instrument direct from factories in Japan, Korea and China in the 90s.

Hey Ben what a pleasure to watch an Artisan at work .. in about 1972 I was a teenage schoolboy in a small Scottish Town & a new Girl " she's Bloody English " arrived .. But she was stunningly beautiful & was in like Flynn with my " Could you type up My Poetry line " ( in those days girls often took typing classes ) & although as I later found out she did have several Boyfreinds I was fortunate enough to make it to the Kissing stage & she also allowed me to borrow her fathers unused old Guitar .. Which was a CSI made in Michigan USA .. it was truly a gorgeous Guitar a thick Triangular neck which felt so natural & ( I was told an Ebony fretboard ) that felt just perfect to my untrained hands .. Sadly I did not know it should have been strung with Silk & steel & I used ordinary 2nd hand Guitar string s from my older brothers used sets .. which caused the body to begint to pull apart at the seams .. I quickly stopped using it & as it happened her father & the lovely Daughter relocated soon after .. But it was an insight into just how amazing these old hollow body Jazz style archtops with the floating Bridge could be .. I have rarely played a Guitar so easy to hold & with such a natural mellow tone since .. I still remember both the Girl & the Guitar with gr8 fondness lol .. keep up the good work .. from another Ben in the Forest of Dean . a very amateur Diy / project wannabe lol . Cheers

steam the neck damage and suction cup a few times. then strip it back with the scraper keeping only enough to use the old finish like a grain fill.. all around the headstock but leaving the stinger... truoil. but that's just my default Epiphone treatment the tail piece was ghastly.. a piezo TOM saddle would have been a nice upgrade likely set it up using some 11-49 Flatwounds and a strap pin output plug now if I was feeling really wild I might try remove the binding and the last bit of ebony from the fingerboard and Inlay the NEOmag pickup as a second output.. putting the maple binding and ebony back over top.

It depends on the item. On offerup here, there's a clearly handmade les paul type guitar... just from the images alone it has an uneven carve, uneven waist and the headstock is about the same. 2k as listed (partly noting the cost of materials to figure that); of which, I've built one and know the cost is never that high. If it's your first build, you have to go into it with the take that this is a labor of love. Idk, there's a right way and a wrong way, good quality and bad quality - only one that's worth the cost/risk as most would probably agree.

Ya know Ben, I'm 58 years old and, honestly, I've never seen the point of brand-worship or "vintage" (old) when it comes to guitars. That instrument is a beautiful example. A nice guitar is a nice guitar; whether it was made last week or 60 years ago - and inverse is equally true of lousy instruments as well; an instrument that is a steaming piece of junk is a steaming piece of junk regardless of whose name is on the headstock, what the model is or when it was made. Period. Full stop. The only way to know the actual "value" of an instrument is to hold it and play it and find out. There's also no disputing that "brand-name" guitar companies are a mixed bag when it comes to the quality of their offerings; and they always have been. Over the years I've seen embarrassingly horrible guitars from pretty much EVERY major brand; even from very sought-after models and "vintages" as well. Nobody in the mass production industry is ever immune from complacency, corner-cutting and lapses in quality control. To put it bluntly, not every brand-name guitar found in a music store in 1959 was a masterpiece. Most weren't. The percentage of garbage to gold in their inventories wasn't much different than it is today. As far as the entire old, used guitar market (to use a MUCH more accurate description than "vintage") goes; I find little value in an instrument I can't customize for fear of diminishing it's "Resale" or "Collector" value. From my point of view that's just damning the instrument to an eternity of mediocre wiring and hardware. What's the point? Besides, If I'm going to purchase a guitar, I'm going to buy a guitar I can actually PLAY - not one that needs to be stored in a glass display case. Seriously, who's going to take a '59 goldtop Les Paul into a dive bar full of intoxicated bikers? If I'm going to do a gig like that I'd rather use something that doesn't have the same cash value as my car. Lawyers and investment bankers can have them. I suppose there is a place for this form of zealousness - for the sake of historical documentation; like a museum, for example. But to me it's sort of akin to religious fanaticism: it's the absurd assumption that people knew more when you go backward in time than they do today, and they were never motivated by laziness, greed or opportunism. That's not human nature, nor has it ever been.

That chunky style of jazz guitar have generously proportioned headstocks and thel chunky cello style tailpieces. It's not modelled on a Gibson it's in the style of the great US Italian builders Jimmy D'Aquisto, John Montelleoni so its all nicely overblown, pretty close to perfect to my eye. Granted the tailpiece could have been shaped back to show a thinner edge profile. Yes it's actually worth about the same as something crazily overvalued just because it has Gibson on the headstock IMO. Not to say Gibson don't make great jazz guitars, they do but they range from basic student models to the fabulous top range git boxes. :-)
