I think some of you should calm down. I work with adults that have developmental disabilities and these techniques DO work if you use them correctly. People need to remember, that working with people like this, you are NOT ALLOWED to grab their arms, wrists, or any other part of body. We all know that the aggressive person isn't going to be as calm as the woman in this video, but that is why they train you...so you can do these techniques faster and more precise. These techniques are not for a mugging or being attacked in an alleyway or field(that's why she says "good luck in your career"), but some of them might help you survive. Bravo on the video!!! Well done!

True, the kicking by developmental disabled is easier to handle by remembering they are mostly unstable on feet so simply moving out of kick range is appropriate. They may fall or in case of one I'm a carer for throw themselves down.

For those of you saying that this won't work: IF this were a social situation done wrong, or if someone is attacking you in a quiet area, you are probably correct. HOWEVER, this is for a health care environment where there are plenty of people nearby. If you have a demented patient, or a psychiatric patient, these techniques will be very useful because you can call for and get help fairly quickly. Also, it would likely be that the attacker has a general frustration rather than them specifically wanting hurt you. So if you can surprise them, then it gives you more time to get nearby help or give them more time to reason, or realize that they can't easily take over.

Unfortunately Martial Art techniques are a no go in these industries. You try those and you no longer have a job. I facilitate and teach a similar system. It's about minimal force used to release oneself. Even some of these in this video are not permissible in my industry of child protection. These work but much practice is needed, as many have commented its about controlling your emotional state first to respond effectively and not instinctually. I have a Martial Arts background and it's harder performing these techniques successfully then doing those as you use a different mindset and set of skills. Systems like these are used in Child Protection, Disability sectors, Mental Health where the focus is safe de-escalation with minimal force/harm. In the street I use MA, but at work I gotta use these

If your hair is grabbed from behind you want to stabilized their hand(s) and bend yourself forward so they're off balance. If it's one handed you can put pressure on their knuckles with the palm of your hand, using your other hand to go to their wrist and push opposite while stepping back and away from them. If you work in the field with people with disabilities you should be taught this properly. If you're not, then there are other techniques you can probably learn for the general public.

There is a huge gap between training and reality. Judging by the movements in this video, which are impractical and useless, 90% of this will not work in an adrenalized state. I'm tired of seeing highly educated people develop self defense courses from their kid's karate class. They are not experts in self defense anymore than the people who show them these outdated and impractical moves. Why turn into a choke and put pressure on both carotid arteries? Why does someone who is pulling your hair leave you in an upright controlled position? Why are you ripping your hand away from people who are obviously trying to talk to you? How did you catch and deflect the only punch or kick they threw at you? You must be Neo off of The Matrix! Very little of this works in the real world and will get people hurt. I'm not trying to be mean or cruel, I'm trying to be real. The fact is that if any of this works in the real world, it is because the person was not actually trying to hurt you. The best stuff works on trained killers. I'm sorry if this upsets anyone but it is the truth.

I'm reading the comments and I don't disagree with them. However, I don't see too much of a problem with the general content of the video. The only problem, like a lot of self-defense tutorial videos is that the instructor is working with a partner who is cooperative, and both people are calm and focused. In reality they would need to perform these under stress. These techniques all require fine motor control, which is reduced when your body produces adrenaline. Also, one would need to perform these things rather fast before the client/patient acquires an adequate strong grip on the throat or wrist. Besides you have no idea what kind of history your patient has. Has he been in and out of jail his entire life? Which means he can probly fight. Does he have military experience? etc. When and if they attack, you will get hit a few times and it will be like nothing you have ever experienced before, this is just the reality of dealing with these personality types. These techniques are not a magic panacea, and performing them does not mean your safe, the person has legs, they can still charge you and continue the fight. Which means you may have to, and not everyone is comfortable with hitting another person. Systems like this are incomplete unfortunately.
@OinkyThePiggy

A major importance is knowing your guys. You should always read up on their history. Unless you or they are new, you should know their diagnosis and history of aggression and physical intervention. While every situation varies, even knowing and practicing these techniques (or updated ones) will still put you at an advantage than not knowing. The first time I got bit I luckily didn't panic and the individual let go without needing to implement any techniques. Not always the case but had I not been trained I might have pulled away and made it worse.

Clearly not evidenced based. Less than 45 seconds into the video the instructor informs us that staying a legs length away will keep us safe from harm! This is an irresponsible statement as a truly safe distance can only be determined by dynamic and historical risk factors, the environment, knowledge about the individual, communication competency, along with with a myriad of many other issues. There are so many complexities associated with human behaviour that need to be considered and understood before even starting to think about what we should do in the worst case scenario. Dennis Tueller's 21ft rule study is worth looking as it highlights how quickly motivated human beings can move !

There are so many points of vulnerability that I stopped watching. I can't believe there using this as any kind of training video. It needs to be redone with a credentialed marital arts instructor. It's so bad ok fact that I don't even know where to start critiquing. In any event, the argument from upper management will be that this isn't the military or MMA or marital arts. My retort is, that this training, regardless if it's leaning more towards defense is going to get your staff hurt. Lose this video.
