The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its contractor CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Company (CHRC) have begun removing highly radioactive sludge from temporary storage near the Columbia River to a more secure long-term storage location near the Center of the Hanford Site.
In this Issue Briefing the elected officials of the Hanford Communities are briefed by DOE, CHPRC, the Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Washington about the content of the sludge material which has remained in the K Reactor area for many years. They learned about how DOE developed a system to transfer the sludge to an Annex Facility for packaging and how workers practiced moving the material in a mock-up facility to allow them to master the tools and procedures for operations. A video of the sludge transfer process, packaging and shipment of the material was shown. At the end of the half hour program audience participants were given an opportunity to ask questions of the speakers.
