Spent nuclear fuel from power reactors is in the form of ceramic pellets, in zirconium tubes held in a framework, in a concrete cask. It is not a liquid, and the pellets are insoluble, like any ceramic. Towards the end of the opening interview, he equated spent fuel with the liquid waste at Hanford, and said that was a good reason to stop nuclear power, intimating that spent fuel would "leak" like these tanks. That is totally misleading and disingenuous, and boils down to anti-nuclear propaganda. Literally nothing he lectured about would happen with spent fuel. He's talking about the liquid waste from bomb making. Two completely different types of waste.

Agreed. Comparing the complex varieties of liquid (or semi-liquid) wastes at Hanford to spent nuclear fuel assemblies from power generation (which can and are safely sealed/sheltered within casks simply staged outside the plant in parking lots or concrete pads) is absurd. To casually suggest that the two share comparable levels of risk is, frankly, hard to perceive as anything but intentionally misleading.

70,000 tons of ‘spent’ fuel is being stored as waste? You mean those fuel rods with over 95% of still fissionable material within? Oh yes waste indeed!!

I find it unsettling that leaking contamination is working its way up the food chain in various forms.
