I’m interested in becoming a school counselor. It’s SOOO helpful watching your videos. I would love to know more about what a normal day/week looks like for you? what is your schedule like?
@heyjudywai

Thanks so much for watching!! I work from 7:30-3:15. A typical day IN SCHOOL includes: parking lot supervision, classroom push-ins, student observations, individual & group counseling, classroom lessons, recess/lunch supervision, conflict management, problem solving, SST/IEP planning and and so much more! A lot of random fires come up during the day and the school counselor is oftentimes the first person called in to help solve the problem. Now that we’re distance learning, I’m expected to reach out to students on my caseload individually and provide individual counseling services, I reach out to teachers to schedule weekly classroom lessons in all grades, and I participate in any SST/IEPs. No groups currently. Overall, counseling through distance learning with individual and whole classroom support!

Your comment made my day!! Thank you so much for saying this! I so appreciate this comment and you!! I definitely experienced doubt and feelings of insufficiency during my program, but at the end of the day, you need to remind yourself to be patient with the process and be proud of how far you’ve come already! You got accepted and so your professors noticed something incredible about you and they believe in your capacity to be a professional counselor! The doubts are all a part of the process but don’t forget to affirm yourself too ❤️❤️

@@heyjudywai Ah! Thanks so much!!! I really wanted to work with elementary school kids, but I learned that that job includes teaching in classrooms during the day, which I'm not sure if that's exactly what I am comfortable/want to be doing. Now I am looking more into high school counseling which includes a lot more college/career counseling. May I ask what made you pick elementary school over middle school and high school??

Hi!! Thanks for the video idea!! Let me know what specifically you are trying to do in google classroom. Maybe I can help you now! :) just as a general tip, I think it’s easier to upload files and documents onto google drive, and then link them to your google classroom. I also recommend organizing your files under classwork tabs and linking items directly under classroom topics. I’m not sure if that explains much, but let me know if you have a specific question about linking items!!

The bitmoji classroom was sooooo cute!! I really look forward to becoming a school counselor would you recommend a sociology or psychology major for this career
@heyjudywai
4 жыл бұрын
I think either major would be beneficial! I would check your course catalogue to see which classes would be interesting to you. Some graduate courses require specific psychology courses while others don’t. I know some counselors who came from a sociology major and others who came from a psych major. My major was community development and I had opportunities to take both sociology and psych courses! At the end of the day, I think it depends more on what the major offers and which one you’re more interested in.

Hello! Just wanted to say I really enjoy your channel ^^ Your videos are really informative and your personality is so fun! I was wondering if you could talk about your journey to school counseling. I recently graduated from uni and was interested in counseling, but I not sure what experiences I would need to have or know what it takes to become a counselor. Hi, Judy! I will be a new middle school counselor this coming school year. How are you planning to address students’ SEL virtually? My district is currently planning a hybrid option and a virtual option. I’ve heard through the grapevine the district office wants us to screen our students when we see them the week before school starts to identify students who need support. I haven’t been informed of what screening tool I’m to use or how to best address these students’ needs. Any tips or ideas would be so appreciated!! And thank you for posting such awesome videos! I’m working on my bitmoji classroom too. 😊

As a new counselor, I recommend you to email all your staff introducing yourself. Don’t forget to include a photo of yourself! It helps so staff can know what you look like and who you are :) Ask if you can push into morning meetings or classrooms to observe and quickly introduce yourself in every classroom! That way, when you start your SEL lessons, students know who you are and why you are teaching them.

But to elaborate some more, asides from creating SEL lessons online, I have also been creating my online google classroom, google site, and google forms. I have a beginning of the year assessment for teachers and students with questions about their needs and what I could focus on for my SEL lessons.

Yay hi!! I highly recommend observing/interviewing elementary counselors (you’re more than welcome to shadow my whole class lessons if you’d like ☺️☺️). When I was a grad student, it really helped me to meet with a elementary counselor and ask them questions about the field! Otherwise, your grad school internship and fieldwork experiences will provide a lot of insight and opportunity for you to learn and ask questions! :)

@@heyjudywai Good Evening Judy. I am thinking of applying to grad school for school counseling as well but it is my understanding that you need 2 years of teaching experience 1st. Is that correct? Also, I would love to shadow in any way that you are comfortable with to see how it matches with my “idea” of that career and me helping young people. -Destinee

@@depps4225 Hi! Yes! Send me an email at heyjudywai@gmaill.com or DM on Instagram (heyjudywai) and we can schedule a time for you to observe :) I did not need 2 years of teaching experience but each program could be different. Are you applying to schools in CA or in another state? I recommend checking the graduate school you are interested in applying for and reviewing their application requirements.
