Hey guys. I own one of these and have a good bit of time on it. Obviously you could be tail heavy, could be other things, hard to diagnose from a video, that said this may help. Stock the plane has the ballast on the top of the firewall, I moved it to the bottom, and its 2lbs of ballast. Also modified the internals a bit. I moved my servos forward, and use two 3200 4s packs upright right against the firewall. Moral of the story is those are some extreme measures to get enough weight forward to get it to balance. Its easy to think "surely that is enough", and it isn't. It has a forward center of mass because of the short nose, and the ballast on the top of the firewall just adds mass higher to throw it over on landing, so lowering that helps. I've found on landing that flaring until it is in the three point position helps prevent nose overs too. When you have a nose over, and the wings hit like that, they can get out of alignment, so the top wing may be crooked compared to the bottom wing at that point. That can cause a yawing tendency, so can being tail heavy. It is a rudder mandatory plane even when everything is set up perfect. Coordinated turns initiated with rudder work best. Anyway, I know thats a lot, but maybe some of that will help you.

It was the perfect amount. Lol. I do appreciate the input. The cg was checked and it was in the right spot but still flies in a way that scares me. I don’t want to crash something so beautiful. I’m definitely adding a little more weight and I like the idea of lowering the weight. Promise a better landing next time. Safe happy flying. Thank you again for all your input.

Many mentions of "tail heavy." This plane needs to be balanced correctly. Then it is a dream to fly. It likes you to lead the turns with rudder. Ground handling is another matter altogether. H9 decided to go with scale (ie: narrow) gear. It can squirrel easily and staying on the wheels after landing is a feat. That being said, on taxi and takeoff, throttle up a little more slowly and keep the tail planted with elevator until the speed builds a bit, then the tail comes up and the rudder becomes effective. I found that moving the ballast weight to under the motor helped. Great video!!

Cg checks out but I’m going to lower weight in the nose and add just a bit more. Will always take nose heavy over tail heavy. A nose heavy plane flies poorly, a tail heavy plane only flies once.

@@adam2brothers That is the trouble with a Taildragger. You need enough weight in the tail to stop it tipping onto its nose. I think it is trial and error to get the balance right. 👍

It's a pound. Get yourself some Higley "heavy hubs." A 2 ounce and a 4 ounce. When I maidened mine I had a 2 ounce on the nose. It flew great! Figured I'd lighten up so I took the heavy hub off and it got squirrely! Put it back on and it flies great.

The tail skid on the early biplanes was its brake. Also when you dig it in with that up elevator it helps keep your plane straight.

You need a lot of Rudder expo so that as soon as the tail lifts you have steering control with airflow and it’s not jumpy 70% expo

Love it. Mine came to 9 1/2 lbs after ballast for CG. What’s your flying weight. I run on a Saito 82. Sounds great. I welded up a new LG using 5/32 music wire. Added an inch to both sides. Looks pretty much the same but more stable and strong. Orig lg is cheap wire. I also have about the same elev trim as I see you have, about 1/4”. Mine wasn’t tail heavy but apparently its incidence is off out of the box. It did several loops on maiden at takeoff. Anyway, add some expo to rudder, a lot, and it will help twitchy steering and nose overs.

Cg checks out but most comments are for nose heavy. Got some advice on checking angle of wings. Was told by a very experienced pilot wings might be slightly at different angles. I’ll go through everything and take it up again. I do want to get it flying nice because it is so gorgeous. A real head turner. Thanks again for your advice. Perhaps a bit more down thrust and right thrust on the motor mount thrust line. An adjustment like that can go a long ways. Nice airplane, good video. Unlike a previous comment, I understood the assignment.....

Lol!! Thank you. We will look at making those adjustments. We were also looking at pitching the top set of wings a hair downwards. We were told on biplanes, that it is sometimes the issue. Thank you for the help and watching.

It may be. We'll have to look at it. There is already a huge weight strapped to the front of the plane to balance it. I thought the cg was spot on, but I don't think it was flying the best it can, so maybe.

If you add a lot of weight to the short nose to put the CG where it needs to be, it is not "tail heavy". It's "just right". Set the CG carefully according to the instructions. You can fine tune it later when you get used to the plane. You probably need less control throw than you think. Keep plenty of rudder, but expo around neutral to keep it smooth. Prop slipstream creates a left yaw, which was not corrected for with right rudder on the first takeoff. Right aileron will make matters worse. You probably need a lot of aileron differential (more up aileron movement than down). It wasn't corrected for on the second takeoff either, but the plane got airborne before ground looping, albeit 30 degrees left of runway heading. You need to use that right rudder for takeoff. Or right rudder trim for takeoff. Take it out after takeoff, otherwise it'll yaw to the right when you pull power for landing. Right thrust will help, but you want that set for cruise flight, which won't be enough for takeoff. A rudder gyro will help. Keep the stick full aft on touchdown to dig that tail skid into the ground. That will stabilize the rollout. If you lift the tail, it becomes free to swing in any direction, which you don't want. Keep the tail pinned to the ground with full back stick. The skid dragging in the grass helps keep it straight. It'll be a handful on pavement. Just like its full scale counterpart, which fortunately, never had to deal with pavement. The real WWI airplanes were just as squirrely, so enjoy the reality.

I'm thinking some downward and to the right thrust for the yawing. I've had a few biplanes and they do have a tendency to be squirly. 4 big ailerons with the linkage setup(that's how i normally set them up) make the slave ailerons a bit flimsy causing the squirly flight. Having both top and bottom wings with dyhedral helps(noticed only the bottom had dyhedral and top straight). Plus making lower wing shorter than top helps. Anyway i think you handled flight rather well with all the challenges. I more than likely would have stalled it, or lost control one way or another. It happens, but when biplanes are controllable they're a dream to fly and beautiful to look at flying. Best wishes.
