Considering it a violation of the Second Commandment, which prohibits the making of "graven images," the Amish believe any physical representation of themselves (whether a photograph, a painting, or film) promotes individualism and vanity, taking away from the values of community and humility by which they govern their lives. Still nice of you to respect their beliefs.

The Amish in Oklahoma had a Quilt auction every year. They made ice cream and sold other things and there was also a craft show. Some of those quilts sold in the thousands and they were beautiful. The coolest thing to me was seeing all of their buggies and horses lined up behind the building.

In the late 60s my dad mom and I went to the Amish town intercourse PA and we had a guy that my dad hired for the week and he took us all around and one day we were at a restaurant and we walked outside and a guy was taking a picture of a man and his family getting into their buggy and the gentleman Amish guy turned around and said Sir please don't do that and the guy said come on I'll give you 5 bucks and the guy says I don't want your money please do not do that and the guy took the picture the Amish guy took his horse whip out of his buggy and whipped at the guy and hit his camera out of his hands and it fell and the lens broke off and the guy got all ****** wanted to call the cops and everything , so our guide went over to him and told them and said go ahead and call the cops all that's gonna happen is you're gonna go to jail he's not because it's not against the law for them to whip you if they tell you don't take their picture the Amish guy had all the rights in the world to whip that guy for taking his picture. We spent the whole week there it was fantastic I learned a lot about the Amish at that time of my life very educational. Add two nights we had dinner with a Amish family in their home and one in the mornings we had breakfast in another Amish family house the food was unbelievable everything homemade.✌👨🍳🎅🚌

In 1986 I drove my boss in his motorhome from California to Bloomington, Minnesota and stopped in Arcola, Illinois to visit an Amish friend of his he had met in South Dakota. First, we visited him at his cabinet shop where he produced cabinets of the highest quality and beauty which would rival cabinets from anywhere. Most everything ran off pulleys and wide flat belts powered by a big diesel engine that turned a driveline under the wood floor. We then drove to Mattoon to buy cheese and then back to Arcola to have dinner with Ervin Hostetler's family in their modern home. They explained that they didn't have photos on their walls but had simple paintings; the reason being that the second commandment forbids graven images and idols so that's why photography was forbidden. I don't believe it's a belief that someone's soul gets sucked out of their body. We stayed overnight in the motorhome and spent the night placing waste baskets under the air conditioner because there was a heavy downpour all night. and the roof seal had failed. In the morning after finding out about the leak, he had us go with him to a neighbor's farm where we could park in a huge barn out of the rain to make the repairs. He had taken his wife and two young daughters with him in their horse drawn buggy. While there, his wife asked my boss's wife if we would like to take a picture of their daughters. We were hesitant given their beliefs on the subject, but after several minutes and a discussion decided to do so. I don't remember the justification for letting us take photos, but maybe it was because it wasn't for their use, but ours I don't know what happened to that photo and wish I still had it. I also got one of their horse and buggy taken from a position so Ervin and his wife would not be seen . That was one of the best trips I've ever been on, mostly because of our experience with the Amish.

Over the years I have interacted quite a bit with Amish businesspeople. As a general rule, they don't mind photos from a distance where the person's face can't be seen, as with your buggy photos. I would guess the man would have allowed you to film his shop, as long as you didn't film him.

I don't think it's wrong to have other people in the background get included in my picture as long as i didn't do it intentionally. It's diffinitely not illegal in public places. We should not take picture of other people unless there's a 'good reason' for it. But it's good that i now know about this issue with the Amish beliefs...i'll make sure that wouldn't accidentally include them on my picture.

The Amish beliefs about photos comes from a Biblical Commandment. A quick Google search gives the details….it’s really about humility and lack of individuality. Even the dolls they make and play with don’t have faces. I’m from NJ and went to Lancaster and surrounding towns often as a weekend getaway. I always loved the area and shopping for homemade goods. Great video and I’m so happy you are taking some downtime visiting with Scott and Terri. ❤️

They consider it a violation of the second commandment, Which prohibits the making of "graven images", the Amish believe any physical representation of themselves (whether a photograph, a painting, or a film) promotes individualism and vanity, taking away from the values of community and humility before self. "Thou shalt not make unto thyself a graven image. "They want to be remembered by the lives they lived and examples they left, not by physical appearance. They do not want others to take photographs of them. It's courtesy and out of respect Dave and you are courteous & also respectful far far from weird well maybe just a little weird 😄 jk (

I guess now we're accepted as a necessary evil. I'm not surprised that you are so respectful! It's not silly at all. Have Teri and Scott ever been to any Amish areas before this one? Any plans to visit Lancaster area? I haven't been there for around 25 yrs. I wonder how much it's changed. I used to love to look at the quilts and the furniture. I was watching the filming of another KZitemr who asked an Amish man (off camera) why they don't want their pictures taken and that man said it was to keep them from being too proud. I do think the older people think that you steal their souls when you take a picture. There are others that don't mind. Just for your info...The Amish believe photographs promote individualism and vanity. Vanity is something they are strict about as in the 2nd commandment. "Thou shall not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven nor earth... though shall not bow down to thyself." It has nothing to do with stealing their souls. However, you were being very respectful as we all should be to other people and their wishes. Thank you!

I live in southern Indiana Amish country. The Amish here have cell phones so don't tell me they aren't taking photos. Also the boys also have TVs and watch basketball games out in the barn using a generator or solar power. They pretend to live apart from modern ways but have actually taken on most modern conveniences such as electric wired homes with solar power and indoor bathrooms etc. No I don't think you took their souls. Their religious laws are mostly man made and I'm not sure they know exactly why they originated.

Dave I was raised in Amish country & had quit a few girlfriends that were of that faith. The photo belief was explained to me by one of my girlfriends, she said that if they didn't know or agree to the pictures then their souls were fine. If they agreed to it then they were going against their beliefs, that's when it became an issue. I use to go to their house & spend the night, they could come spend the night with me only if my parents promised there would be no TV watching by the girls. My family even went & help rebuild a barn & home when it was burned down by a lightening strike. They are amazing people, we use to get fresh eggs & milk from them all the time.
