I bought this China Made Hangkai 2 Strokes 3.5 hp Outboard Motor almost a year ago, this is the most affordable brand that I could find and after reading some reviews (quite many are bad reviews), I decided to purchase this cheap outboard to pair with my Intex Seahawk II Inflatable boat.

My Initial thought was to have a small outboard motor which I can get familiar with, I planned to get a better and bigger power outboard in the later stage. The China Made products have the reputation of not lasting and the workmanship is poor as well, so it was not surprising that when this Hangkai 3.5 hp Outboard Motor arrived, some oil stain was found at the gear box.
A 2 cm long crack was found on the gear box housing which caused the gear oil leakage, after a few emails the seller agreed to ship a brand new gear box housing to me with no cost. Although I was delighted but the confidence of using the Hangkai 3.5 hp Outboard Motor on the sea was reduced, as I couldn't help but thinking what would come next?
The shipment took another 3 weeks and when it arrived I had to dismantle the crack gear box housing and installed the new gear box housing, the cost for getting it done was too much and I figured that I could handle it with no sweat.
How wrong was I as it was more complicated than I could thought of, with no proper tools especially the Bearing Extractor, I struggled a lot on the whole process, fortunately I managed to get it done.
I finally paired the Hangkai 3.5 hp Outboard Motor with the Intex Seahawk II Inflatable Boat at Air Papan beach, surprisingly the first test survived with the Hangkai 3.5 hp Outboard Motor being tortured for almost 5 hours!
The Hangkai 3.5 hp Outboard Motor was eventually being used for the next two fishing trips and it started to give warning sign. On the last fishing trip I had at Air Papan beach it stalled intermittently, it vibrated viciously and was jerking on the full throttle. I was forced to cut short the fishing trip, what a let down!
I browsed back those reviews I read and found similar issues on other users and it seems like a common issue, with the help from the almighty Google Search I managed to get some solutions, a servicing and checking on various parts is needed.
Hence this video was created which I stripped off the gear box housing and replaced the gear box oil, which I am quite familiar with it now : ) , a thorough check on the fuel pipes, spark plug and the water cooling system was done too.
Now I am waiting to get it tested on the sea again this week and hopefully I do not needed to start searching for a new outboard motor soon.
Stay tuned for the next video on the cleaning and checking on the internal compartment of the Hangkai 3.5 hp Outboard Motor.
