Henze was submitted to many influences, including extra-musical ones, but he was great enough to build up a personality of his own with them. He begins to be acknowledged for what he is: a great composer. KZitem gives access to many works that were very difficult to hear, so we can have a better insight on his immense work. ha could be described as a "moderate atonalist", in the sense that he never forgets that this new technique must be submitted to revisited traditional values: melody, harmony.

@@Alix777. Henze m'a toujours intéressé. Tout jeune encore, j'avais pu assister à une représentation de son "Prince de Hombourg" à l'Opéra de Toulouse; qui m'avait très favorablement impressionné. .

"Great"? Hrmmm... I don't classify him as being on the same level as a Brahms or a Stravinsky. Just a very good, interesting composer.

This isn't the type of music that I listen to very often, but I was curious about this composer, as I had heard his 7th Symphony some years ago and thought it was ugly. It's a somewhat pleasant surprise that his 5th is more palatable and intriguing - not pretty, but it does create an interesting atmosphere. Maybe I'll investigate his music further.

for me, descriptors like "ugly" - "pretty" falter + fail in the face of such brilliant abstraction... :)

In the 20th century if you look at much creative work architecture , music , film , literature you will find creative people were not making wallpaper anymore. They wanted to put as much of real life as possible on the screen . Sitting on the toilet is not conditioned to be pretty but it is the working of the body : that makes it worth interest worth putting into art , worth commentary , worth experiencing ,.Please open your standards .Pretty is not what serious composers are trying to do since around 1914 or first World War . Its damn boring .

@@MrInterestingthings Pardon me if I'm inclined to be wary of someone who equates composing a worthy piece of music with sitting on the toilet; he is in serious danger of becoming not only boring, but meaningless. If opening my standards includes lowering them to include music like this, I certainly have no interest in doing so. I didn't mean to infer, however, that Henze's symphony has no redeeming qualities; there is much music that can be deemed "not pretty", or even "ugly", that is nonetheless worthy of being heard and appreciated, even recognized as enduring masterpieces. I just doubt that the work under consideration here is one of them. After thinking about it these past five years, I might just listen to another of Henze's symphonies in hopes of allaying MY boredom. Wish me luck!

It is astonishing that in this day and age one must ask someone else to provide information that is readily available online. Written in 1962. This recording, 1965. Premiered NY Phil/Bernstein 1963. 3 movements: Movimentato; Adagio; Moto Perpetuo.

Film composers are a larcenous lot. That goes double for Jerry Goldsmith. He doubtlessly altered (sped up) the music from "Creature from the Black Lagoon" to come up with the iconic pulsing theme for "Jaws", including the 3 note skipping motif that follows.

As with most modernist composers much of their work is just a cacophony of sound with little to know beautiful melodies, imo it's rather horrible.

i do not enjoy this piece either. I uploaded because it wasn't on youtube at the time. counter examples to your point: bartok, prokofiev, schnittke, shostakovich, messiaen, ginastera who all wrote great melodies and very musical, yet experimental, pieces.
