Edward Reeves Photography is a family run photographic business, with a working studio and business, established in 1855. Believed to be the oldest still functioning studio in the world, handed over from generation to generation, it is currently run by the great-grandson of the founder. Its archive is recognised to be of international importance.
Aware of the importance of this archive we have been bringing it into the public space. In 2014 eighty historical pictures of Lewes High Street were displayed as lightboxes situated in the shop windows depicted on the glass plates. This was very well received, and these exhibitions have become an annual event.
The exhibitions deepens the understanding of local history, and related public talks and events are organised, notably ‘Lewes Remembers World War I - when all the 236 names on the war memorial were represented by a person of the same age walking with a flaming torch from the home of the fallen soldier to the memorial where when the names got called the torches were extinguished.
This archive work engages people with history in an accessible and
meaningful way. www.reevesarchive.co.uk reflects the scope of this project.
