Earth Day is all about recognizing and celebrating the beauty of this one shared planet we call home. With a little bit of effort, we can all learn how to take better care of the environment, and become a symbiotic part of the ecosystem. We have an inevitable impact on the Earth, so let's try to make it a good one we can be proud of.
One of the best ways you can help your landscape is by planting perennials. These plants have really deep root systems that break up soil and hold it back, preventing erosion. They also come back year after year, which means you won't have to disturb the soil to plant again each year. Perennials are some of the best plants for pollinators too, and if you really want to go the extra step...
Plant natives!! Native plants evolved in and adapted to their environment, and alongside local wildlife. Without a doubt, planting native perennials, shrubs and trees is the biggest favor you can do for your landscape and for the earth.
Your plants all need good, healthy soil to grow in, so make sure you're doing your best for your substrate. One of the best ways to improve the health of your soil is to leave your leaves where they fall! Forests and meadows depend on leaf litter and plant debris for soil health and insect overwintering and breeding, and your landscape is no different. This plant matter breaks down providing nutrients like nitrogen, which plants need to survive. With this in mind, by allowing leaves to break down naturally on your property, or by spreading them like a natural mulch, you can greatly reduce (or eliminate!) the amount of fertilizers and pesticides you use.
Finally, plant for pollinators!! Pollinators like bees, birds, butterflies and insects are the most crucial element for the survival of plants on earth. Without them, we'd lose the vast majority of flowering plants, and terrifyingly, pollinators have been in decline for decades. So let Ike give you some tips on doing right by these critical critters.
Once again, Happy Earth Day! Do our planet a favor this year and start Planting More!
