A mission to free a baby elephant entombed in muddy prison. It was a hectic day for wildlife officers as they embarked on another mission to attend to an injured wild elephant. Upon completing the treatment mission, as they were on their way back, the officers noticed in the distance an elderly man signaling with his hand to draw attention to something crucial. You can observe him signaling the officers at the beginning of the video. The officers promptly rushed to the specified location, sensing intrinsically that an innocent animal might be in peril and in need of their assistance for survival.
What they could see was heartbreaking! A baby elephant had become trapped in a muddy pit, standing shoulder-deep in mud, making it unable to move.
The distressing scene unfolded in rural village bordering to the forest, specifically in a recently harvested paddy field. During the drought season, in their quest for water, elephant’s and other animals venture in to the nearby villages. Sadly, this baby elephant too seems to have come in search of water and ended up getting stuck in muddy pit. Word spread quickly, and villagers gathered at the site upon hearing the news of the trapped baby elephant. The baby elephant was so endearing and loved by the wildlife officers and villagers.
The villagers, in collaboration with wildlife officers, employed various tactics in their determined efforts to rescue the elephant from muddy prison. Bringing logs as a means of support, they attempt to provide a platform for the elephant crawl out of the pit. But the mud has thickened, causing the elephant to adhere in to the pit. The concerned individuals brought buckets of water and poured them over the elephant to loosen the thick layer of mud, aiming to facilitate the elephant’s movement.
However, their attempts to lift the elephant with the assistance of a log, proved unsuccessful. The calf was fatigued by its repeated effort to extricate itself from the muddy prison.
Meanwhile, the wildlife officers gathered crucial information from the villagers who had been conversing around the elephant. It was revealed that the elephant had been spotted multiple times visiting the village with its mother. According to the villagers, the mother elephant had been lingering nearby in the thicket, and they heard the distressed mourning of the mother elephant throughout the night.
While allowing some time for the water to loosen the hardened mud covering the baby elephant, the veterinarian decided to administer protective medicines to the baby elephant, including antibiotics and ivermectin. The antibiotics were given to prevent any infection from microbes that could enter through the scratches on the calf’s body during its struggle to free itself. Ivermectin was injected to eliminate parasitic infections, especially parasitic worms that might have been acquired through the mud.
The dedication of officers in saving this young elephant was evident, as they risked their lives for saving the calf. During the administration of the injections, one officer bravely stepped forward, but got stuck in the mud.Fortunately, with the swift support of the villagers ,he was promptly pulled out, averting a potentially dangerous situation in drowning in the mud. It is quite amusing to see the little fellow trying to attack the uncles who are going to hurt him with the needles.
Significant force is required for this task. Here, you can witness the collaborative efforts of villagers and wildlife officers as they join forces to exert their strength in rescue operation. An officer crawled in the muddy pit to properly wrap the rope around the calf.
The immense effort of these heroes finally paid off. The baby elephant has been successfully pulled out from the muddy pit, and his life has been saved thanks to the animal heroes who went above and beyond to rescue him. The calf was in good health, although he appeared a bit exhausted. Gradually, the rescued baby elephant began to walk towards the forest, instinctively seeking the comforting presence of its mother. The rescue team observed the mother elephant patiently waiting at a short distance within the forest border, ready to reunite with her baby.
Here you can barely discern the patient elephant mother. She might not have approached the vicinity of humans because they are living in the dense forest and wild elephants are not familiar with the human beings. However, she seemed to place trust in rescuers, confident that they would have save her baby.
