Forest Bridges is celebrating National Forest Week by posting educational videos for the public that speak to some of our collaboratively developed Principles of Agreement for Active Conservation Management on the 2.9 million acres of O&C public lands in western Oregon.
Forest Bridges recommends a metered use of Variable Retention Harvest--an Ecological Silviculture treatment--in O&C moist forests, along with variable retention thinning and prescribed fire, as appropriate.
Moist forests comprise around 1.5 million acres (about 50%) of the O&C Lands of western Oregon, including those managed by the BLM and others on Forest Service O&C lands in the Umpqua, Siuslaw, Willamette and Mount Hood National Forests.
As one of our Principles, the intention of a metered application of Variable Retention Harvest on moist O&C forests is to regularly create early
seral habitat with legacy to accelerate towards a goal of 50% structurally complex forest needed to sustain a range of habitats and ecosystem functions in moist forests over time.
To learn more about Forest Bridges' Active Conservation Management, Moist Forest Strategy for the O&C Lands, please visit the projects page
on our website, forestbridges.org
In the meantime, please enjoy the following video, featuring the BLM's Abe Wheeler, who provides an excellent overview of the nature and purpose of Variable Retention Harvest as a treatment tool in moist forests.
