Sinhala and Tamil New Year
Sinhala and Tamil New Year is celebrated, when the Sun moves from the Meena Rashiya (House of Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (House of Aries). This joyous occasion falls on the 13th and 14th of April every year, symbolizing the ending of the old year, and the beginning of the New Year. It is one of the most important and awaited holidays on the Sri Lankan calendar. Sinhala and Tamil New Year is referred to as the Aluth Awurudda by the Sinhalese and Puthandu by the Tamil community. Through the many interesting customs, delicious traditional sweetmeats and the entertaining activities, this time of the year creates an opportunity for all Sri Lankans to be happy and unite, offer gratitude, and celebrate as one nation.
New Year Customs and Traditions
Sinhala and Tamil New Year Rituals The unique rituals and the traditions are what make Sinhala and Tamil new year special and memorable. And most special about the new year traditions and rituals are that they are performed during an auspicious time. Therefore, the entire country cooks, eats and engages in work at the same time.
The dawn of the New Year and the transition time
The transition time is slot between the ending of the Old Year and the dawning of the New Year. According to the auspicious time table, it is a period where there are no auspicious times. Thus, this period is referred as the Nonagathe, Nonagathaya, Punya Kalaya or neutral time. According to traditional beliefs this time is used to observe and perform religious activities. Buddhists are also urged to halt their daily routines and seek blessings from their monks/priests. The people are seen going to their temples in white clothing and get back home before new year arrives.
People waited in anticipation for the end of the Nonagatha and the beginning of the second half of the transition period. As soon as that time arrives, as told to us by astrologers, the sound of firecrackers and the rhythm of ‘rabana’ (a one-sided traditional drum) , the pealing of the bell in the village temple signify the dawn of a new year - ‘Aluth Awurudda’. As the New Year sets in, families become busy with activities, getting ready for the rituals that are to follow.
Lighting the hearth and boiling of milk
The next ritual in the Sinhala and Tamil New year is the lighting of the hearth at home. The hearth is lit by the lady of the house facing the designated direction (which varies every year) and either the traditional new year dish, Kiribath, is cooked or a pot of milk is boiled, both signifying prosperity. The milk spilling all around the pot is believed to bring luck to everyone in the family. From the oldest of the family to the youngest, all gather around to witness the milk bubbling from the pot.
Blessing the elders
Another tradition which has been passed down over centuries in Sri Lanka is paying homage to elders. Children will show respect to their elders by offering them lush sheaves of betel as a blessing. The custom of offering betel to parents and elders symbolises the act of paying gratitude. The children in turn receive blessings from parents for the coming year.
