I had given sugar up several times in my life as I knew it made my immune system problems much worse. But it never worked in the long run. Then, I slowly began changing my diet in other ways (eating organic, not eating processed/fast foods). As I did this, I noticed that my craving for sugary foods lessened and lessened. Then, a couple of years ago, I decided to give up flour and sugar. I allowed myself to backslide once in a while, but these cravings, too, began to disappear. I feel so much better, am doing more exercise and walking and have lost over the 2 year period about 16 pounds so that I now weigh what I did in my 30s-early 40s. BTW, I'm 80 years old. So, if I can do it, anyone can do it.

I quit all sugars and sweeteners almost 7 years ago. I originally planned to allow myself treats for birthdays or holidays, but one time of having a dessert made me change my mind. I felt so much better after about three days that I didn't want to suffer the negative physical feelings from eating sweets again. I had been a sugar addict for years but now I never want to go back, not even a little bit.

I am a recent cancer survivor. My sugar addiction got worse after I finished treatment. I am on oral maintenance meds, which led to weight gain. The treatment also put me into menopause. Sugar addiction is very formidable. I do not want a recurrence of cancer, and I felt I would eventually become diabetic. I became concerned about my pancreas as well. Today is day one. I plan on telling myself that I just have to get through “today”. New subscriber. Thanks for the encouragement 😊

🥰 The sugar cravings do indeed go away when you’re serious about not keeping it in your diet. There’s wonderful fruits and recipes without sugar or sugar substitutes. (sugar substitutes keep your sugar cravings there so I don’t use them. Plus those chemicals are very unhealthy.) There’s lots of recipes online. You will reach your goals faster without sugar. So many health benefits when you cut sugar out. My weight is back to normal, blood pressure is normal, no more pre-diabetes. I have more energy. Feeling so much better! Staying away, getting positive results. 30 lbs gone. Now, if only the arthritis in my hands would go away. The neuroma in my right foot is fading. My blood numbers we recently rated as "optimal." I find this remarkable considering the amount of saturated fat I consume... proving that dietary cholesterol has nothing to do with blood cholesterol. Oh... and my consistent "high normal" blood sugar, that I've had for decades, is now at healthy levels. Diabetes is in my genetics... Sticking with this program for life.... for a life I not only want, but need to be long. I'm 72... have so much to do where I need to not only be strong, but I need to have endurance as well.

I stayed away from sugar that long. I wag hungry and my wife gave me a banana.. Seriously I bit into that thing and a real rush went through my body. It took 10 minutes to savor that banana. Even sugar in fruit is addicting. I would like to slowly break that sweet habit, it would take time but by the end of the year it could happen. Wonderful channel. Thank you

I used to think that people who came off sugar and said that they eventually found it disgusting, or that they felt better, were trying to convince themselves (I know - very cynical). I was drinking a 7-11 tank of Dr Pepper/Coke a day PLUS eating sugared cereal and whatever else I wanted. When I went past the age of 50 and my blood sugar started moving to nearly 100 (and my doctor told me not to worry about diabetes because everyone gets it to some degree), I said "no way" and went cold turkey. I was a zombie for almost 2 weeks. That was nearly 10 years ago and now whenever I eat something sweet I feel like the roof of my mouth is about to explode. I was totally wrong - foods taste so much different and better. Tea without sugar is wonderful. Life is so much better. I wrote the above without viewing the video all the way through - it took me years before I would even politely eat anything with sugar in order to avoid hurting someone's feelings. I said "no," and I found that, eventually, people/family members respected it, and after a while, they wouldn't even offer it to me. And I was fine with that. I do very rarely now eat at a function now, but I couldn't always do that. I am so happy I did it, even though it was a challenge for the first few years.

No longer tempered and when accepting a treat find that I cannot eat it more than a few bites as it taste far to sweet and just awful. Only question is why didn’t I do this years ago. I not find that I do not get out of breath as I used to and losing the weight and returning to a now healthy weight my asthma and really improved. It's like running into an ex that everyone else gets to enjoy time with and I know I can't enjoy him because he will hurt me later if I try. I can easily give up sweet stuff like cakes, cookies, and ice cream and the like but occasionally I eat a high protein Greek yogurt for instance which does have 7-9 grams of sugar. The positive encouragement is a good thing. But to be clear, these stories of not having an issue with sugar after some period of time isn’t true for everyone. I went keto and cut sugar and lost 60 Pounds and I wanted sugar every day. I finally caved. I gained all 60 pounds back. Then I started again. Keto. No sugar. Not even keto “treats” and I lost 125 pounds. I wanted sugar every single day. I eventually caved. And I have gained every 125 of those pounds back. I’m Not here to discourage anyone from cutting out sugar. But I am here to discount this notion that once sugar is out then it’s no problem.

I have an anecdotal example - having been invited to my friend’s mom’s thanksgiving dinner age 13, I’ve been a big fan of American dishes ever since. As the internet opened up, I have been able to access so many American recipes from here in England. I almost always halve the amount of sugar in the recipes, if I follow them correctly, we find them unbearably sweet. I also noticed that sugar features as an ingredient in many savoury recipes. Well done to every one who has cut out or reduced sugar. Thank you for all your informative and supportive videos, Dr

Thank you Dr. Becky! I’ve suffered from IBS all my adult life and being on your 0,1,2,3 diet and following your intermittent book and having 0 grams of sugar has really helped my IBS! It seems like when I’m feeling a wee bit weak, you make a video to spur me on 🌟☺️💕🙏🏼💫✝️

Same. I’m happy to comment on Dr. Becky’s posts to give her a boost. I’m sugar free 99% of the time. I still use stevia and erythritol a little bit in coffee and such. I do notice a couple things: 1. If I do cave and have real sugar, my hearts starts racing and pounding and 2: if I make myself a keto treat like a keto mug cinnamon roll, I start craving sugar again.

Thanks Dr Becky! The struggle is real, but eating fresh fruit & berries helps a lot. My arthritis pain has diminished & I'm working out at the gym 3x/ week plus walking more. Love all the comments, too. ❤️

I can't have cheat days, even if it's only once every few months. One scoop of ice cream or piece of cake and I'll go on a sugar binge that lasts for weeks. It's like the saying for alcoholics that 'you can't just have one drink'. I've heard about the test with mice where they chose sugar over cocaine so it really does seem like a drug.

I don't keep snacks in the house, because I can't help myself if it's there. I'm on keto, but last time I had a cheat day I had some Doritos, and I finished the whole bag. I could literally feel my brain telling me keep eating, it was like I was hypnotized.. That doesn't happen with real food. After that, I'm gonna just stop the cheat days.

Good video, thank you. Do sugar substitutes (like stevia and monk fruit) affect the brain in the same way as real sugar does? I've given up sugar but find myself relying on these substitutes, primarily in my morning coffee.

I've tried going without sugar a couple times. I lived for the time I could stop my self-imposed sugar exile - like about a week. When I went back to eating sugar, I felt crappy - not crappy enough to stay off it, but by then I was "triggered" again. I didn't realize until I went back to eating it how good I was feeling while not eating it.

I have reduced my carb intake and now when I eat sweet, I find it too sweet. I am not sugar free, but eat very limited, mainly my fruit and with my tea once a day. Thank you for all your tips, love all your videos.

I love my fruit but cutting back on all the sweets has given me no knee pain and 30 pounds since the fall gone. I still had birthday cup cake but not living with it daily as before, made such a difference.

I’m a retired family doctor and have learned all I know about nutrition after my career! I am sad I could not share the low carb benefits with my patients. I have been without sugar for over a year and a half. I am healthier than I was when I retired and have lost 25 # and increased my muscle mass with a exercise regimen from Dr John Hoehn DC.

I was a full-blown sugar addict. 5 years after having quit, now I do not like the taste of sugar. I have no temptations … ever. In fact, I cannot even tolerate the sweetness of even the keto acceptable fruits, ie berries. And when I very occasionally make a keto muffin I use about half the sugar recommended in the recipe. Never would believe this could happen. At the same time I know if I went back to sugar I could easily return to being an addict. I honestly believe, for me, If i go back to doing what i’ve always done, I will get the same results I have always done. Personally I get a great deal of satisfaction from no longer being addicted to sweets as I am no longer supporting those who want to keep us addicted in order to keep lining their pockets.

I never considered equating sugar with drugs or alcohol until I tried giving it up. Experienced horrific withdrawal efx although they were short in duration. However I have not found sugar to be unpleasant tasting since, so I'm still able to consume it when I want. Big difference is I now recognize that I'm actually poisoning rather than treating myself and that's enough to maintain very low levels of consumption. Still working on total elimination, but have reduced intake significantly. Great video!!

I have 34 and quit sugar 7 weeks back, just had a slice of Christmas cake although, I feel more active, and most important, my inflamed red face full of acne has got clearer. I enjoy deep sleep in addition to it. I can now enjoy the real taste of foods that I was unable to enjoy before. I drink unsweetened teas and I enjoy these (just add jaggery powder sometimes though). I can undoubtedly say that my life has become beautiful without sugar.

Dr. Becky, this is spot on. I used to love having Peanut Butter M&Ms, those are way too sweet now. I've also greatly reduced my alcohol consumption, I've only had 5 beers since the beginning of January, but I had a beer last weekend, and I could really taste the alcohol in the beer. Not sure if I was imagining it or if it works the same as sugar.

I gave up alcohol about a year ago, had a sip of wine the other day and all I could taste was alcohol, didn’t enjoy at all! Makes it easier to abstain for sure. I gave up all sweet tasting food 4 days ago and hoping for the same results. The alcohol experiment gives me hope that I will not enjoy sugary foods after getting over the cravings/addiction.

Am I not the norm? I quit sugar and other than the first few days, I haven’t found it difficult. If I do get a craving, I eat something salty, such as pistachios. I carry macadamia nuts or almonds, and baby bel cheese with me in my purse and gym bag. Maybe watching so many videos on the detrimental effects of sugar helps me see it as not a treat at all!! I do make keto desserts every once in a while, with monk fruit. Mostly for my diabetic husband. I’m pre diabetic. My fasting glucose has gone down from 120 to the 80s in about 4 months. I quit wheat and alcohol as well. Low carb but not going for ketosis. I call my diet “kinda keto”. Im doing time restricted eating. I’m hoping my senior years continue to be healthy and active!!
