Dave Turner. You’re so right. It was a perfect ending. Sarah deserves every award going and James Norton was superb as Tommy Lee. Against my better judgement I felt a bit sorry for him when he spoke about his past. I must be going soft in my old age. I’m so disappointed this was the final series best drama ever in my opinion.

Apart from shoehorning the climax of the story arc of that chick's murder and the husband and the pharmacist into LITERALLY 30 seconds of exposition, offscreen as well. That was worth 5 episodes of build up. The TLR and Cawood scene was great though

I personally loved this ending and thought it was very fitting for the show. When all is said and done, Happy Valley is about Catherine, Ryan and Becky and Catherine coming to terms with her daughter’s death, THAT is what this show was always about and that is exactly what was focused on in the final episode. I thought it was perfect.

If you watch the final scene, Tommy cries at the sight of Ryan's photos. Although he was extremely violent, probably due to his dysfunctional childhood I don't think he was a total psychopath just a very very damaged individual. I believe he loved his son who was his only light in his world. When he put petrol on himself and Ryan in the canal boat he implied they would both be going to a better place, his only hope for a better life with his son. This drama should make you think hard about the nature / nurture argument. If Tommy had, had a totally different upbringing he would maybe have been a totally different person and perhaps a good dad. The plot is very nuanced. That is what makes it an all time great.

The ending where the little girls will be raised by grandparents.; "there's a grandmother". This was powerful because it brought home to me that Ryan's story isn't unique. Prisons are filled with fathers, and those men have sometimes caused the deaths (either directly or not) of mothers. It was a painful reminder of the lives forever changed by violence and crime.

This should have been at least 8 episodes. The finale felt really rushed and like a ton of stuff was cut out. The Hepworth story especially should have ended with the pharmacist getting arrested or at least brought in for questioning. The showdown at the end with Tommy Lee Royce was excellent viewing, but after waiting this long for season 3 it really did feel very rushed. .

TOTALLY AGREE - They did this with the end of LINE OF DUTY too!! 🙄🙄Why Bother going to the EFFORT of building up 2ndary story-lines through the season then just have them 'resolved off screen' with a bit of dialogue??!! It seems disrespectful to the audience who become invested in these stories - as if the producers couldn't be ARSED or the budget had suddenly run out so these scenes cudn't be filmed!! Surely the BBC wudn't have minded if their BEST DRAMA in ages wanted to do an EXTRA Episode or BETTER - to EXTEND the final episode to 2 hours? What about all the ALTERNATIVE ENDINGS that were filmed to hide the real one...will we ever get to see them??!! FANS should start to PETITION the BBC Now!!!👍👍😍😍🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

I think people are missing the point with the ending. We didn’t need to see the other story lines of the men getting locked up. As previous series have shown all that play out. We needed to see Catherine get some kind of closure and for this chapter with TLR to finally end, that was what the whole show was about. By not showing the story other story’s showed us that it didn’t matter anymore, Catherine was able to finally move on some way.

The reason it’s a good series is it focuses on more than the lead pair or lead relationship. They spent more time on Ann’s mother’s friendship with Clare than her relationship with Neil this last season. It was brilliant. We just needed another 20 minutes or so. So glad for this season. He grew up fine almost done with his leaving exams and is thinking of an apprenticeship. Has a lot of Catherine in him. She cleaned up some higher ups messing up her patch and TLR no longer an issue. With all the stuff she saw maybe she will live more than 5 years after retirement. They have seen so much and it takes years off your life.

I was quite pleased with the ending, I think it brought everything together nicely and I don't think any extra detail needed to be added to make the storylines worthwhile - every plot and sub-plot had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The one bit that did irk me a little was the TLR break-in - the house would surely have been under surveillance, and the Catherine walking in knowing there was a high chance of TLR being inside had me shouting at the TV, but I get it was a plot set up too. I'm glad it ended how it did, I had a horrible feeling Claire or Ann would meet their demise with TLR but I'm happy that it ended happily.

Can't shake the feeling that there was some time unforeseen time constraint imposed on them at the last minute. Eg: They were working under the assumption that they had 7 or 8 episodes and corporate decided otherwise fairly late on into the creative process. Or some variation of this theme. It was a bit like an exam that's going really well and then with 15 mins left, you realize you missed some major questions so you rush them in a panic and hope for the best.

This last episode felt extremely rushed. I hated how Catherine basically solved Joanna’s murder in 30 seconds at the end of the episode. It felt like they forgot about it and then remembered they had to solve the case before the end of the episode, so they gave Catherine a few lines explaining how she figured it out out of nowhere. It was anticlimactic.

A little, yes. But I also think it echoed Catherine's actions in ep01, illustrating what an excellent and savvy detective she is, when the two colleagues are winding her up about the body in the barrel and she flattens them knowing the identity. So, in essence, she departs as she's always carried on, purposeful, crime solving, truth seeking.

Just like Line of Duty the BBC once again put out a very underwhelming finale for Happy Valley. An additional episode was needed to properly conclude the other story lines before the confrontation between Tommy & Catherine. We didn't get to see Ryan's reaction to the events nor Catherine off to the Himalayas in the jeep. Furthermore, the police had Catherine's house under constant watch so why did it take 20 minutes for backup to arrive as usual? Sorry but the finale didn't do the series justice and felt low budget. The only positive was the subtle hint that Ryan might be appearing as a rookie policeman in a later spinoff series.? 🤔

They left out Neil, Ann’s dad, whatever happened to Daisy was her dad in her life ever, Ivan’s bride, watching too much of this I was glad Tommy overtook those three in the field. I think Rob should be charged with the diazepam. He took legal pills away. What does that make him? Impersonating a doctor or drug runner? All the kids, even Faisel’s did well. We got his backstory through the daughter. I would have liked a catch up of Kevin’s wife, his kids and Kevin. Did Ros ever stop drinking and did she divorce grandpa? Will anyone give Claire a job? Volunteer forever, even Alison had a job prospect why not Clare? So glad she had Neil. She raised Ryan almost more than Catherine. Catherine sacrificed and protected and sheltered him. But Claire did the work. It was good to see Catherine not in every arrest scene like Ivan and partner pick up, she just cleaned up her bits and retired.

If you see the subplots as world building, rather than requiring tying up, you'll be a lot happier! Additional cases are the things that make the world inhabited. Hepworths were included to signify that Ryan's story is not unique - violent men killing women and leaving orphaned kids is not a new story, and also to provide a reflection that, rather than being inhuman, monstrous psychopaths, the men that abuse women around them, men that control, coerce, kill women, are all around us. TLR isn't special - he isn't unique. He's just another fucked up, nasty, misogynistic, pathetic, violent little man - just like, say, our fathers, our teachers, our chemists, our neighbours. The point was to say that this could be - and happen to - anyone. So whilst Catherine is extraordinary, her family's life and story is not. It's just another tragic loss in a sea of male violence in this life. At least, that's what I took from it. I think people hoping for neat little ends and epilogues and reactions from everyone has missed the point entirely. Life doesn't always resolve - it just keeps going. For Catherine, it's over, sure. For those little girls, it's just beginning. The cycle continues, and one man's death won't stop it.

Exactly! Happy Valley began with someone threatening to self-immolate and ended with someone actually doing it. There are themes that run through the show. While in rage states, both John Wadsworth and Faisal murder women that they did not intend to kill. They experience the fear of being caught and then the relief when someone else is blamed initially.
@kristinesharp6286
Жыл бұрын
I felt bad for both of them. It was the acting. They did intend to kill them though. It was to shut them up. They would not feel safe until they were dead. Victoria should have gone to prison. It does not make sense that Neil or John would lose their jobs over it. Spouses due to the cheating yes, but jobs and kids no. They were crime victims. Maybe it was the addiction that came after it? Joanna was more complicated. She was groomed when a student by a teacher. He should not have been teaching at minimum. In the end that is what he seemed charged with. It was ambiguous. He should have been charged with practicing medicine without a license, that teacher for taking away her prescribed drugs. And then calling the police on her obtaining them elsewhere as if she had no right to have them in the first place. Faisal was doing the same thing. He wanted to be a doctor and instead was a pharmacist, close but not quite. I don’t think it was just his wife wanting to keep up with the doctor in-laws and needing the money. Also I thought university affordable over there? I thought NHS paid terrible? Joanna was doing just what Victoria did to John. Joanna was threatening Faisal and trying to get paid through an apartment and living expenses and putting him up to taking care of getting rid of her husband. I wanted to know what happened to Kevin and Kevin’s wife and daughters those years later. There was also the theme of grandparents raising the grandkids cause a parent in prison and another parent dead. The teachers kids lost their mum and their dad would be in prison a while. There were 3 grandparents. Could be a fight over which side gets them. Ir maybe none of them wanted to take them on. They would certainly have contact with dad during the incarceration. And go back to him after. Gosh. That poor kid may never take her coat off. Brilliant show. I saw clips on KZitem. Bought the first and second season and then waited a few months before season three came out and bought that. Loved they continued the story after years went by. I wanted Claire to have a nice ending with Neil. In a way Catherine was similar to John and Faisal. She would not have peace until Tommy was dead. As an American I did find some of the language offensive and violent scenes were a bit extreme. I kept wondering why the police didn’t shoot half the time. Gosh the actor playing Tommy was good. Catherine seemed to have such compassion for John, Alison, the prostitutes, even Neil but the two that hurt her family Tommy and the Teacher, nope. Daryl had every right to defend himself against three coming after him after they beat him up before. There was a police record for pity sakes. In US one or more would have been shot. Francis and Alison played their parts well too. Why didn’t we ever see granddaughter Daisy? Do men not get partial custody in divorce or visitation? Mike was right, it was not dissimilar. I was thinking the whole alien thing was meant to be how they uncovered the organized crime activity. @@joannadearest8318
