I've been into HiFi since 1975, and have gone through ton's of gear....until I got some Harbeth SHL5's 10 years ago. Best thing I've ever bought, and will only get replaced with another Harbeth. That RADIAL cone material Harbeth's have sure makes a difference, listen to some similar spec'd Spendor's and heard the difference, the Polypropylene Spendor's have much less detail. The pair matching to the extent that Harbeth goes to makes a huge difference as well, and also one of the factors that make them easy to setup [use light weight open stands] The 'Rave' reviews they get are not hype, it's just the truth....they really are that good.

I hate to say and admit coz I was the one who had spent more than $5000 on the SHL5plus, and had to sell at a loss. I rather my friends laugh at me at getting the harbeths wrongly, and have my ego hurt at selling them off, than live with poor sound. Now owning two pairs of other brand speakers at $2500 and $5000 range, in two rooms, and both beat the harbeths hands, feet down.

I used to like older Focal plastic cones in their 5" designs, even the 6.5" were quite OK, often a bit easier on ear, with well damped modes. Paper sometimes has this sort of 'surface noise' depending how good is the cone, and what's in the mix. I sort of like their warm sound qualities but often they are behind in other qualities comparing with stiffer cones.

Went for the one that felt and sounded the best, irrevelant of who made it and where it has come from. Thats why sometimes I don't want to know the price before I test. I won't have the ignorance to state they sound comparable to speakers like those of Harbeth. But keep in mind it is like comparing a Honda Civic to a Bentley. The Bentley will win for all of its refindment and balance and so on. But at the end of the day, the Civic will give you a relaible, enjoyable ride for a fraction of the price of the Bentley. Many audiophiles tend to forget that wisdom. A good speaker is the one that gives you the possibility to enjoy your favorite music, no matter what the brand may be ;-)

On the part of the boxes, it's more than just rigidity; it's also density, how 'dead' the material sounds, and surface area. MDF is widely used because of how 'dead' it sounds. More recently, people have built boxes using layers of different internal cutouts, using what's essentially a sine wave wrapped around the interior square with each layer having a 180° offset of each wave; this adds more surface area, which adds to sound quality. People also use acoustic foam and polyfill for 'more surface area' and yes while it does add some surface area, the material also absorbs the sound waves. The rigidity and density of the material might add to the 'deadness' of the material, but I'm willing to bet that the molecular and atomic structure of the material also have a factor in that; comparable to how polypropylene's structure effects sound. Theoretically, based on all this, a sphere should be the best enclosure, having the most surface area to volume ratio. Made from the most 'dead' sounding material. But spheres are hard to construct.

So he's saying? ? He matches parts forgoing tolerance? Since each speaker is way out of spec? Or they go beyond tolerances and make things with tighter tolerances?
