This case is rock solid (like other Pelican cases). kzitem.infoUgkx3jMFPw9QX_Iu4DNcjW-t9AZ4_iNhJzhE I paired it with the Master Lock 140T set of padlocks. The US Airways ticket agent that checked the case was impressed by how completely the latches were secured. The case has layers of removable foam cubes that can be easily adapted to the contents of the case and keep everything secure. After declaring its contents to the ticket agent, I was allowed to put this case in other checked luggage. Due to its size and black color, this helped insure that it wasn't misplaced by a baggage handler. TSA was (apparently) happy with the packaging as well. If you plan on flying with more than one of the main items, I would recommend buying a larger Pelican case and just transport the case as another piece of checked luggage.

I've seen this happen during welding , very sad moment for a welder . the level of magnatizm I was seeming in this video leads me to believe these are not stainless. Mild magnatizm is exhibited by work hardened stainless. But what I saw here , is a bit beyond mild. Just food for thought.

I too have many Pelican cases. I have been disappointed in the warranty though recently. One of my Pelican 1050 cases broke a couple months ago and they wanted me to pay to ship it to them and include a check in it to pay for the return shipping. With paying for shipping both ways the cost was almost the same as buying a new one on Amazon. I just bought a new case to save on the hassle of the RMA process. Back in the day you just took a picture of the broken case and sent it to them and they would ship you a new one. Gone are the days.

Great video and perfect tests. The crush test and the water test was just what I was wondering about. The drop test is really only valid for testing the durability of the case itself. Whether the egg breaks or not is dependent upon the firmness of the foam. (The foam in each box is too firm for the egg at 10 feet.) I learned that in my high school physics class. We dropped eggs from the top of the football stadium (~40 feet). A flimsy cardboard box with soft foam was all that was needed to keep the egg from breaking. Moral of that long-winded story... If the contents are fragile, change the foam to something much softer.

That crush test show the the reason behind the price of each one of them. I know its very uncommon that your case will be drive over by truck but same kind of forces will apply to the case if you carry something heavy in it and drop the case. I use many different Pelicases at work and for example our Peli 1400 case setup weights approximately 25 kg and can be dropped from waist height at anytime without fear of broken stuff inside or broken case. We did try some cheap ones years ago but it was not worth of the money since they break too easily. But if you are going to handle your case with care then they may do the work for you. Also one thing to take into count is the resell value. We do sell our very hardly used Pelicases time to time to civilians markets because they will go about the half of price of the new one and even when they have been broken from outside (like missing handle or something) they can be sold for pretty good price still. Those cheap cases will sell next to nothing when they have been heavily beaten and if broken then they are worthless.

9:16 Err, possibly. Stainless steel is such because the chromium content in the metal essentially "rusts" creating an inert chromium oxide "paint" across the surface. Grinding would remove the passivization layer which would in turn expose the iron content to attack by oxidizing compounds. Additionally its worth noting that one must be careful when working with stainless as material from the tool may become embedded into the work-piece and sabotage the ability for the stainless to passivate. If you used a grinding wheel that had been used previously it's entirely possible that metallic particles from a previous project, or possibly the wheel itself, have become embedded into the piece. I am no metallurgist so your statement that the rust would not appear that quickly on a stainless item may be true- I just wanted to point out that stainless will happily rust, especially if scratched with a steel item.

Excellent video. Really wish you did a close-up, detailed review of where and how the apache shattered. Clearly had something to do with the hinge design, but the details of the break seem important for shatter resistance from a higher force/altitude drop. Also, the latches will always be the point of failure from the perspective of constant use. I'm curious what you're opinions are on how long they'll last on the Apache.

Great field test & review and your conclusion is spot on. The Apache cases provide a great value and offer good protection in all but the most extreme circumstances. I had just bought 3 in different sizes a week before viewing this and flew from Seattle to OKC (with a plane change in Denver) and the two I was not allowed to carry on fared just fine, while the two road cases for rack mounted gear were both damaged to the point I will need to replace them. Fortunately, like the egg in the slow drive-over test, the gear inside all functioned perfectly.

Surely your not going to go swimming with in the case, throwing it of the balcony of the hotel room your in during the holiday season, and I'm damn sure your not about to put it under the back wheel of your truck. If your anything like me, even if it was in the Pelican case, you'd be treating with kid gloves to maximize it's protection, and since both held up reasonably during the test, pretty sure both would be fine for everyday use as well. Of course if your hard on your stuff. Let it bounce around the tray of your pick up sitting in the sun etc. , then I guess the Pelican would hold up better over a longer time.

While most stainless steel is non ferritic, which makes it not magnetic. Which possibly confirms your suspicion of the hardware not being stainless. Grinding the surface away doesn't prove anything unfortunately. Unless you use that grinder for specifically non ferrous metals like stainless it will add impurities to the surface that you are working on. You must passivate the stainless for it to resist corrosion after working the surface. The impurities usually include radical iron ions which oxidize to rust very rapidly. Depending on how corrosive the solution it comes in contact with. Like salt water, etc.

You should put weight on the inside before Dunkin them. When you put the weight on top I would be skeptical as the lid would be pressed into the main body, therefore creating a tighter seal especially not being submerged very far. As the deeper you go the more the water pressure squeezes between the lid and main unit. Of course these will be good enough for anyone on the first world most likely. Great review and thank you very much for it. For me I will be purchasing the apache because of this review. Cheers

The eggs probably broke based on the inertia of the yoke hitting the shell more so than any criteria of the cases. 30 min at 8" is nice proof that it's water resistant, but I'd want to see a head pressure of 5meters or so for 30min before I call it submersible. Also, maybe should have started with a front wheel on your truck? Using the rear wheel on a rwd vehicle adds lateral force that is nearly impossible to match between tests, and it looks like the Apache case failed because of higher lateral forces, I bet they both would have survived the front tire.

The fact that it has only a 90 day return policy is a turn off... and the design on the Apache is a bit blah compared to Pelican, SKB, Nanuk. Also not sure I am a fan of the the knob versus a proper pressure relief valve.

I have a Pelican 1150 and would love to see you run it over at 20mph, and they are about half the price on amazon ($25-$30).

Excellent review thank you for taking the time and effort. I will continue to over pay for the Pelican because it’s made in America. If you can afford to over pay buy American made.

The corner in the frame at exactly 5:00 looks like it sustained more than just minor cosmetic damage

you should put the weight in the case so its not pressing the lid down on the seal more, this way you get a better accuracy in the seals eval

With the Egg test...you didn't pack the eggs tight enough...so ofcourse they were going to break. You need to fit things nice and snug so they're supported.

Hey..... great video. I just was wondering if you can use the harbor freight case to carry your firearm on a plane - TSA case.
@EclecticSteve

Yes, the TSA will accept the Apache case for transporting firearms. Just like any other approved case you will need to have a non-TSA lock on the outside of the case.

Hey steve....... One more question, when you carrying this case on to a airplane do you open or close the pressure release valve before going onto the plane?
@EclecticSteve
5 жыл бұрын
The pressure release valve should be opened (turned counterclockwise) and then closed (turned clockwise) any time you close the case and need it to be watertight. This equalizes the pressure inside the case with the pressure outside the case. So before you go on the plane you should open the valve, then close it again. If after getting off the plane you have problems getting the case open, then open and close the valve again and this should allow the case to be opened.
