Great review! I'm an engineer with a background in science, physics and a number of other disciplines in history, technical writing and electronics. So I may have a deeper appreciation than others. I did know the US General was a better quality purchase, but didn't realize how poorly made Husky tool boxes are by comparison. Husky isn't a brand name, its I believe part if a conglomeration of Stanley (not American) products made by different manufacturers. Husky hand tools were formerly manufactured exclusively in the United States starting in the 20's but are now largely made in China. US General is misleading although its quality is purportedly controlled by a higher standards from the US is also manufactured in mainland China. Historically speaking, America had the best manufacturing in the world but the trade agreements signed in 90's allowed China to purchase manufacturing and they did which would later be shipped to Asia decimating our manufacturing independence and 100 years of proven American quality. The hit to manufacturing jobs is still being felt throughout America's manufacturing industries and may never recover. America used to have some amazing engineering and it's sad we let that legacy go along with the jobs and knowledge we had.

Easily the best tool reviewer on KZitem! You’re really taking the “cheap” stigma away from HF tools. It seems like they really started improving the quality of their tools over the last 10 years. Like we all know, HF tools were thought of as throw away tools so it didn’t matter that they were cheap overseas junk. Now we’re seeing noticeable updates and upgrades which is exciting for guys who don’t have a fortune to spend and yet still want quality tools. Well done sir! Double thumbs up!!

Anyone looking at HD for a toolbox doesn't know the first thing about quality. They just want a large volume. One thing this reviewer didn't examine is how smooth the drawers are when fully loaded. Also the depth os these boxes compared to Snap-On style true 24" deep boxes makes a huge difference to store larger power tools.
@SubversionGarage
6 жыл бұрын
My broader point is that HD used to offer quality, and HF had the cheap tools. The US General box is twice the HD for the same money and that is a shame for HD. My 56" USG has been loaded to capacity for several years now with no problems. I am under no illusions that it is a Snap-On box, but then again it was 1/8th the price.

OMG now that is one intense review. Great review and thanks for telling it like it is. I am an old man now (80), so I wont be buying a tool box any time soon. For years I worked as a mechanic and worked out of a Craftsman tool box with all craftsman tools. I worked next to a guy with a Snap On tool box, of which he paid a small fortune. He had every tool under the sun and was a very good mechanic. One day I came to work, and he had quit as a mechanic and was working in the parts department huh ? The Snap On truck guy loved this guy, as he always bought something off that truck. Now what really got me was a young guy working LOF and purchased a Snap On tool box just to change oil. His tool payments were more than he was making, and he soon quit and lost everything. Three tool trucks came by every month Snap On, Mac, and Matco. I worked there at that Oldsmobile dealership for about a year, then went into Law enforcement, where I retired after working 11 years, due to an accident. After retirement I began shopping at harbor freight and bought some very good tools. The price was right and HF sure has improved over the years. Yes HF has some made in China junk, but not everyone can afford made in USA. PS, Oldsmobile went out of production as we all know. I am a retired US Army officer w/ 20 years, Vietnam Vet with two purple hearts and retired Police, so I do well. After retirement I bought a huge tool box from COSTCO, can't guess where it was made, but has served me well. I enjoy watching your tool reviews, knowing I will see a fair honest review. I understand this review is about HF vs US Husky. A guy should buy what he can afford and gets the job done. ..Ken

I have Snap-On as well and I can tell you, even though I'm not employed as a mechanic and need the convenience of a Snap-On truck every week, the value of Snap-On has gone down over the years as other tool companies have emerged. Capri, Gear Wrench, Astro and several other makes are carrying much more value in their products when compared to Snap-On and the tool truck convenience. No question Snap-On are quality hand tools...however, I can find a comparable long 1/4" ratchet wrench for about $80 less than the Snap-On and be just as satisfied. These US General tool boxes are quality sturdy sheet metal and have great features that truly make one wonder why they would spend twice or three times for other makes.

I own a Harbor Freight 41" wide bottom cabinet, 41" wide top box, and a 16 1/2" wide side box. I've worked out of them for 13 years, and never had a problem with any thing. My total cost was around $1000.00 for all three boxes. MONEY WELL SPENT!! I'm retired, and when I think back to the days of multiple tool boxes, some tools here, some more over there, some under a workbench, etc., I wish I could have bought these, a really long time ago. For starters, which tool boxes are us made? Craftsman? The HF box is better built than my craftsman 40inch. Snap on? It's not worth the price. I refuse to pay SO's inflated prices. As for the tool quality, some is junk, most is decent and some are outstanding. Anything black impact is is outstanding. I've been a heavy truck mechanic for over 40 years and I use and abuse my tools to get the job done. 5 years ago my box got stolen and HF is the only way I've been able to afford to rebuild. Air tools are decent, and very good for something that may only come out of the box a couple of times a month (my 1/2 inch impact is a nitrocat). Chrome sockets and extensions, some junk some decent. Quite a bit of stuff I get off the Internet.

I'm not a professional mechanic just a DIY'er and coming from a CSPS Costco SS tall box it was a great change up! I like having a wider box that is shorter. It makes it so much easier to find tools and you have a flat surface to work on providing you don't use it as a storage shelf! I looked at the Husky and after I found your review the choice was obvious. Thanks for doing all of the heavy lifting (Research) made my job a lot easier. A year in and no regrets!

About a year a go I decided I needed another 42" roll around. After looking at the big box stores and Harbor frt. I bought the HF. It doesn't have some of the features you show but seems well made. The differences that I see now: no separate latches on drawers, simpler casters, I haven't measured metal gages but seems strong enough. The deal with the 2 slides on the side of the deeper drawers is that it allows them to be moved to a location that has two shallow drawers. But if you move the bottom deeper drawer up and put two shallow drawers in the place, the bottom shallow drawer will not catch the lock bar. Not a big deal for my use. HF now sells a premium line that is very nice but much more expensive.

I have been wanting to replace my 1970's Craftman tool boxes for years. I built a trolly frame on wheels to load 2 tall stacked Craftsman boxes together just so I could get my tools closer to the projects without having to walk all the way across my 60' wide shop just for one tool. Even added one of the Harbor Freight hang on side box on it and that HF side box, with it''s roller bearing drawers, outclasses those old non ball bearing Craftman boxes. So been thinking of just yard selling the Craftsman boxes off and putting some hard earned cash on the 72" HF Box with the big top box. Have it figured that almost all my tools will fit in that set up. Currently using 6 Craftsmans spread all over the shop now. Each with specific tools for that area. Well, almost. Thanks for the review. Now to just find a Coupon to get an even better deal on them.

Harbor Freight put this video on the website for the US General box, informative that the coupon at 12:45 show Halloween 2018 expiration date. And the price is 1099 (with coupon $999 ) and now on 9-1-2023 the box is listed at "clearance" price of $1199. I'm not longer sure it a good buy but the box is almost sold out. Only located 2 in the coastal SE from SC to St. Augustine, FL. And I haven't seen any recent coupons for toolboxes. Very helpful video and the kind of publicity that causes makers to improve products. Oldest trick makers use- make it look good on the front hoping customers don't look underneath. Lipstick on a pig as is said. Husky isn't competition unless significantly less costly - like half the price of the US General.

I agree. Husky is almost always pure junk. Hopefully they change suppliers eventually and release high quality boxes. I’m guessing videos such as this one might motivate the executives a bit more than a few extra dollars of profit, but we shall see.
