Hey Matt you may have already found out, but you can turn the vacuum dust collection Port on the plunge router around to the other side.Take it off turn it to the opposite side and it will fit right back on perfectly.

I have the same two routers from HF. I've had them both for a couple of years. My plunge router is also the Blue one, and my trim router is the older orange colored one. I hardly ever used the better one, I have used the smaller trim router several times. I find it easier to grab the smaller one for round overs, most of my jobs are small ones, it's easier to maneuver because it's small & fairly light weight. For the price of the little trim router, you can't go wrong, when it burns up just toss it and buy another one. LoL I also have a HF 12" miter saw, looks like the one you have in the video behind you. HF makes some good stuff, and they also have stuff that is junk, you learn what is what. Thanks for the video!

I have the same small trim router, I agree with you on every point. I will add, check the screw holes on the base. I bought the router specifically to finish a small music instrument in a rush. I was cutting a slight roundover on the top thin birch ply top. When I was done I discovered a small plastic burr on one of the screw holes left over from the factory had gouged the entire top of my project on the trailing edge. This cost me an extra 1.5 hours of delicate hand sanding to recover. BTW, I didn't get the 10mm guide bushing either. Thanks for the post.

I just bought two of the HF trim routers for $30 on sale. I also have 1 1/3 HP Craftsman router table and 2 1/2 HP DeWalt router with fixed and plunge base. Like you said, these HF trim routers are so cheap that you can allow yourself to dedicate a few for a specific bit. Thanks for the review.

This (IMHO) is a very accurate review of that trim router. I like mine a lot and have the exact same minor complaints about it. The only thing I don't see mentioned is runout. I've suspected mine is not great in that regard, as it feels like it's got a bit of wobble, though I haven't thoroughly tested it to see where exactly the cause might be. Hasn't mattered much for the stuff I use it for though, and it could be a quality control issue where most of them are OK. -Thanks for the video!

Thank you Matt, for the informative video. I recently bought in India the 220V version of the exact same trim router that you have. The sticker shows the name "Dongcheng" and of course, it is made in China. You mention that there is no need to separate the two halves of the base plate. In fact, the base plate is designed like that to accommodate the 10mm guide bushing that is supplied with the router. If you are never going to use the guide bushing, you may stick the two halves and solve the problem of saw dust getting into the base plate.

Matt -- I've owned all 4 of the HF routers. To be honest, they are all very good routers. The 2.5hp went into my Router table, the 1.25 hp 1/2 " Collete I turned in for a PC 890, the 1/4 plunge I gave to my brother when I moved, and I have 4 of the trim ones. No frills though. I usually wait till they go on sale for about $20. Its the base I keep attaching to things. They seem to work really well, and dang if they are not the spitting image of the Makita and the Grizzly that sell for a lot more. FYI, I gave away my Colt when I moved, always had a problem with that router not staying locked into position. I would think that this would be a perfect router for the CNC crowd as well, put your bits in, and just replace the motor unit when needed. Good review.

Mr. Heere, I thoroughly enjoy your review of Harbor Freight Tools. You make such clear presentations, focus on what's important, and often give workarounds to trouble areas of tools, like duct tape on the trim router of this video. Question: have you ever seen an adjustable fence, like what would be found on a router table, only for an oscillating sander. (I suppose I could build one) It would seem that which such a device that such a drum sander could be used for straight edges...or maybe that's the realm of a disc or belt sander, or the router table itself?!
@MattHeere
8 жыл бұрын
+Dave Jones I've not see a fence on a sander with the exception of the one that helps hold your work in place on a stationary belt sander. Mitre gauges are used on sanders, so I expect there are good uses for fences as well. As for straightening edges though, I think you'd find that oscillating sanders have too much "give" to get a really true edge. The core of the spindles is usually a hard rubber or plastic. It's stiff for sure, but not like steel.

Matt, What do you think about the Plunge Router being 1/4" collet? Has it ever stopped you from doing anything in hardwood because it isn't 1/2"? Everyone says get the 1/2", but I can't afford one. Would I be unwise to get this HF 1/4" plunge router (not the trim router)? Thanks for your video.
@MattHeere

The only time it's hampered me is the time that I accidentally bought a 1/2" shank bit. Of course the 1/2" collet gives you more options, and generally indicates a stouter machine. But 1/4" bits are widely available and unless you know you want to get into something like rail and stile bit sets then odds are you'll be able to do 99% of what you want.

FYI-For 1/4" trim router I suggest going online to a site like Ebay and checking. They have ones with a metal housing and a little more power ie higher wattage, for about the same price and with free shipping from the US not China, so there is no long wait to get it. The rest of the accessories are the shame cheaply made China quality crap as on the HF version and yes they comes with same an extra set of bushing too (and easily removed caps to replace them). And for about $10 there is version with about 2X the power. BTW-I was thinking of using it in a mortising tool so the metal housing and extra power should be useful in that application. And thx for the useful and slightly comical review.

The only thing that kinda disappointed me about the harbor frieght plunge router after buying it is that I realized it is only compatible with the one 1/4 inch collet that it comes with. I dunno why, and this is obviously my fault for not reading carefully, but I assumed it woulda came with both sizes of collets. Prob just because of its size. But other than that, this thing is actually great for the money. I've been chewing thru wood, HDPE and aluminum with it and it not only handles the cuts like a champ but it actually leaves a finish that I'd be proud to take to prom. Haven't gotten it to really bog down that much either, even when making cuts that I really shouldn't be. Overall just a really good tool for the money.

Nice review! I own one of the red plunge routers. The base is the worst thing about it. There's no way to add a bushing without 3D printing a little insert and replacing the dust collector screws with slightly longer ones. I've never been a fan of flat sides on a router base, but it's probably necessary on this one since there isn't a reliable way of centering the baseplate.

The duct tape trick may be helful because the tendency is to keep tighterning that little brass screw since the plastic guide is sliding and ruining the project everytime. With bad temper this router could easily be flying out of the garage (good thing I controlled myself). I will try to find a better screw and put duct tape to make it useable again. It's a common misconception (created by tool manufacturers trying to sell stuff) that you need a certain amount of power to cut stuff. It's a combo of the power available and the *rate at which you cut*. So yes, the little router will do it. No, it won't do it as fast as a bigger router.

Mr. Heere, say a Festool Dust Collector and Router gets a "10" for picking up debris, what would say the 67119 1.5HP Plunge Router with its vacuum port gets....an "8" maybe? Thanks.
@MattHeere
8 жыл бұрын
+Dave Jones It's tough for me to make that comparison having never seen a Festool in person. If we set the scale that a "10" is perfect dust collection, then this thing gets somewhere between a 1 and a 6 depending on the cut. Routers are notoriously difficult for dust collection across the board though, so I don't know that it's a lot worse than most of what's out there. If you're making a dado then the collection is pretty good. If you're flush trimming it's useless. If you want any sort of real dust collection with a router, then a router table needs to be part of the equation.

how is the harbor freight Miter saw I need ONE 12 inch

+david galeski Depends what you want it for. It really does have the capacity, and it seems to be reasonably rugged. Accuracy is another mater. The "fence" is a joke, and both the slide rods and the pivot mechanism have some slop in them. This is not a precision tool by any stretch. It was great on my shed build, and it's awesome for cross-cutting rough stock to length before jointing/plaining. But that's where it ends: carpentry and rough stock. Don't plan on making any finish cuts for furniture on this saw. You'd probably be OK for trim work - but then I can't imagine needing a saw this size for trim!

+david galeski - Spring for the "HERCULES" brand miter box. I paid $399.00 for mine. Very accurate. It also beat Dewalt 12" miter box. I cut Bamboo flooring, base trim, crown moulding with mine & it was amazing. Don't know how I ever got by without it, well, yes I do, I spent a lot more time with the old junk, cheap saws I owned, yes, I said owned, they are gone now. Really though, This 12" miter box is the sh*t.

+david galeski - Sorry, I got the "Hercules" brand 12" Miter Box saw at Harbor Freight. Also get the big stand for the saw. It is just like the one for DeWalt but about $140.00 cheaper. I paid $84.00 with 20% off coupon. I paid about $380.00 for the saw with coupon.

Would this work for milling out a 80 lower receiver
@MattHeere

Nope. Strictly a wood working tool. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that if you are completely new to milling, then an AR lower is NOT the place to start...
