Info on Cylinder Replacement: The cylinders used on these trenchers are easy to find and replace as long as you know the specifications. You have two choices: 1). You can simply call Harbor Freight at 1-800-444-3353 and order part # 29339. Cost at time of writing: $121. See: manuals.harborfreight.com/manuals/parts/P62365.pdf Availability and delivery time may be an issue. HF now also sells other vital components for this trencher which were hard or impossible to find before. 2). You can order aftermarket cylinders which may be better quality. You simply need to know the cylinder's OEM specifications: Rod: 1.25" Bore: 2.5" Stroke: 14" Extended Length: 36" Retracted Lenght: 22" Front Mounting Tube Length: 3" Rear Mounting Tube Length: 3" Tube Diameter: 1.02" Port Dash: NPT-06 (3/8) There are many manufacturers who make a closely compatible cylinder with the following spec differences: Rod: 1.5" Front Mounting Tube Length: 3.25" Rear Mounting Tube Length: 2.25" Port Dash: SAE-08 (1/2) The larger Rod Diameter is a plus and should result in a stronger rod. The Front Mounting Tube Length of 3.25" requires that you grind 1/8" off of each side. The Rear Mounting Tube Length of 2.25" requires that you add 3/8" worth of 1" washers to each side. The different Port Dash requires an NPT-06 (3/8) male to SAE-08 (1/2) female adapter (#6405-08-06). You can find these from many sources. Here's one: smile.amazon.com/6405-08-06-Hydraulic-Fitting-Female-Carbon/dp/B07ZDKBMW1/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=6405-08-06&qid=1588336639&sr=8-1 Here are some sources for these cylinders: northernhydraulics.net/catalog/2.5-bore-welded-cross-tube-3500-psi/2.5-bore-x-14-stroke-welded-cross-tube-mount-cylinder-1985.html www.magisterhyd.com/product/2-5inch-bore-x-14inch-stroke-cross-tube-hydraulic-cylinder/ www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/chief-wt-welded-cylinder-25-in-bore-x-14-in-stroke-15-in-rod-dia?cm_vc=-10005 There are many more sources. Cost will range from $130-$250. Typical cost is ~ $140.

Sorry to hear about that GoneredCar1. We're very glad you are OK and safe. I still have mine in the garage. I'm working on it, but a major reorganization is needed and is in the works. I closed my 10 x 10 storage shed in Munising and have a 10 x 25 just north of Green Bay. I just finished some heavy duty shelving for it. It's going to be just a little more work until I'm running my trencher in the home garage. It all works out good in the end though as the bush hills and small stumps I need to get out are a secondary consideration at the moment as I'm finally have gained good access and am opening a new area. It's there I want to build a 200 square foot "Garden Shed" ( no permit needed ) It's tough though, I'll need the trencher. I'm going to have to take it down to get it packed into the small rebuilt heavy duty trailer. Do hydraulic quick connects reduce fluid flow ? How can I avoid that ? The rebuilt old trailer with General Altimax 205 - 70 - R14 extra load tires at 40psi actually held a load of semi-wet sand over 20 miles from Munising. I bought 1 yard of fill sand for $5 ! I kind of need new springs though.. One side was weaker than the other and both were almost maxed out. Were any of the other rams compromised ?

I was called the other day by the rebuilder and the ram is complete and ready for pickup. I have been on vacation the last two weeks and will pick it up this week and get it back together. This will only take 15 mins at best. I use several quick connectors on many things and never seen a loss of any kind. Sounds like you got a lot of projects going on. By the way the other day I used my Kubota loader to get bags out of my wife's trunk and to the front door of the house. Now thats the laziest task I have found yet.

I agree, these little machines have a load of power. I use mine to pull up Florida Palmetto bushes, and if you know these plants they are well dug into the ground. No easy task. Trencher does it with very little effort.

Yes, we were doing woodworking till 2010 and closed both shops. We made all the mill work for many hospitals that had Hospice rooms in the Chicago area. We used Cherry and Maple mostly to build the fixtures. I use the lift a lot to work on my cars that are being restored. I will be removing several more trees and bushes tomorrow at my Gun Club that were damaged from are cold winter this year.

Hi goneredcar1. Been watching your videos. Thanks for taking the time to make videos on your tools. Thats good the tree did not hit you. That HF trencher sure is built tough. Hows the scissor lift working out ? I noticed in some of your videos in the back round some woodworking equipment ? Do you do woodworking. If so you have nice tools there. I'm professional woodworker. I run FREY WOODWORKING INC. in portland, OR. If you every have some time, could you maybe do a shop tour of your woodshop. I noticed a Grizzly surface sander, how do you like it ? Thanks for sharing, hope you get the trencher fixed, and keep the vidz coming. Thanks, Michael Frey Portland, OR FREY WOODWORKING INC.

Hi Goneredcar1 ! Well, my garage is good and cleaned out now ! Yes, I'm working on my trencher. And yes, you're right I have too many projects going, but the list is going down. I installed the hubs and wheels a few weeks ago, but now that I really think about it, I wish I had sprayed the axle with a good amount of WD40 and maybe added some grease. The tolerances are very tight so I'm thinking WD40 to help prevent rust from seizing the hub to the axle. ( Funny, yet another example of why my HS English teacher was wrong. She told us to spell I before E except after C. She was wrong about the word Science too . ) The seat needs a few drill holes for the rain drainage system built into the seat itself. OK, here's the good news. I can get the trencher into my trailer with the booms off. It turns out I have 1.5 inches to spare. This only works if the body of the trencher is placed upon blocks about 6 inches high as the frame member that attaches the hitch coupler can then extend to the front of the trailer with a modified second layer wood piece of the trailer. In other words, the sides of the trailer are at two height levels. The first level is attached to metal frame members that have square metal tubing . The second layer up inserts into theses tubes. It's not too difficult to attach blocks to the plywood floor avoiding metal members. Reinforce the underside with a little aluminum and lag bolt the trencher body onto the blocks. It will work. And I still have a valid $99 HF coupon for 1 ton shop crane. I'll use my 2 ton to load it and the one ton will go up north with the ram removed and taken home. A good piece of plywood will be used as a floor over the gravel road. I've been looking for a hydraulic quick connect solution, but the news is a little sad. It seems that M16 x 1.5 fittings do exist, but they are very rare, especially in the US. I've looked into ordering them from China, but even the manufacturers there only make one model or so as I guess it just isn't profitable. I could try Germany or Sweden, but I'm loosing confidence that I'll find the real McCoy here. I'm probably going to just have to buy the stupid adapters to NPTF that I can find. Or just use the plastic stoppers that come with the trencher :( . en.songqiao.com/index.html Even they only have one model with M16 x 1.5 and you can't get that model of an LSQ quick connect even on AliExpress. goneredcar1 Hi goneredcar1 ! I have found M16 x 1.5 quick connects direct from China. It's kind of a mixed thing though. Want it sugar coated or bad first. Well, here it is sugar coated. Yes, I can get quick connects cheap from China. There are several adds on MallAid.com for M16 x 1.5 hydraulic quick connects. The bad news is mutilpart. 1: The shipping charge is undetermined in advance from this China site. You are asked to choose a shipper and guess the weight. Our best choice from the list is Fed EX. IT'S NOT CHEAP ! They are guessing over $20 for 500 grams. 1000 grams is one kilogram or about 2.2 pounds. The end result could be better, but I haven't pressed the BUY botton yet. 2: The best we can get in a real M16 x 1.5 connector is male theaded on both sides and there is only one model available. There are many listings, but it is always the China LSQ Q/ZB275-77. For example : www.mallaid.com/index.php/item/40988028620 Here is a link to the factory page. en.songqiao.com/showproduct_p74.html Not bad actually, it is rated to 5000 psi, but flow may be limited. It does seem to be the best solution as an M16 x 1.5 ferrule is also found at this site. www.mallaid.com/index.php/item/19066393596 Note that this China site sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. One has to be patient to get the actual product page and hit the back button and try again sometimes. Note also that the price drops very fast with quantity. 3: There are better connectors also listed, but they are dual ended. They are M16 and M10. Example :www.mallaid.com/index.php/taobao/view/id/22048792173 4: The really nice planar ones aren't available in M16 at all. Example: www.mallaid.com/index.php/taobao/view/id/38805266188 The factory site is en.songqiao.com/showproduct_p46.html Have a good one goneredcar1 ! Dave

+goneredcar1 Can you tell me what size and type the hydraulic fittings are? I recently purchased one of these machines and I'm going to start upgrading it very soon. After watching every video you have made on it, I was convinced that it would be a good fit for what I need to do. Thank you so much for making all the videos on it! It was interesting to watch your machine evolve through all the upgrades and modifications. Now that I have one, I'm going down the same path you did!

@@goneredcar1... thank you so much! I picked up a used one from North Attleboro a few months ago and it's been a God-send. Never realized how powerful this machine is, but instead bending it like you did, I snapped the cylinder rod right at the pin. Again thank you so much for your help!

The ram bent because it's cheap non-heat treated Chinese steel...junk! Quality heat treated steel would have been hard and therefore cracked instead of bending. Your steel ram is SOFT.

The same thing happened to me just now and I found your video while searching for info on the web. My bucket got stuck between two large rocks and I was trying to get out when this happened. There's no way that trencher could bend that shaft. That had to be mechanical when the tree fell. I've had that same cylinder apart(lock washer literally broke, nut backed off inside and galled the threads on the end of the shaft to where cylinder is unrepairable). What crap. I have rewelded many things on the machine, replaced pump(motor is next, sounds like it's ready to crap a bearing), many hoses rub on sharp metal, really poor design to use and move. Those things are junk.
@goneredcar1

You are right it was the impact that did the damage. Where the ram is still straight that was the last 8" or so still worked, so I could still push it away. My point was even after all that bending action the ram still worked and never lost oil, not one drop.

I'm not sure about what parts are available, but I just received the parts that I ordered last year at Thanksgiving. There a little slow in parts only 6 1/2 months for them to arrive after telling me there no longer available. The ram I damaged I had repaired local for $300.00 and it's just as good as new. The ram was repaired and returned in 4 days. Keep us informed on HF parts if they have them.

+david rubio Yes I did get the rod replaced and the machine works great. The cost for the new rod was around $100.00 and I did the rebuild. I used all the old seals because I had already replaced them. You asked a question on towing I have two videos on that subject. The videos address the limitations of tag along and the benefits of a trailer. But for going a short distance tag along works just fine.
