Baltimore's Harbor Splash 2024, the first public swim in the harbor in 40 years, opens for registration next week amid mixed opinion over the water's cleanliness. There's plenty of fish and wildlife in the water, and the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore is looking for people to join them. The 2023 Healthy Harbor Initiative Report Card cites routine monitoring as finding the water in the harbor meets the state standard for swimming on most dry weather days. Over the last five years, overflows from Baltimore's sanitary sewer system have steeply declined. A Maryland Department of the Environment database shows sanitary overflows in the city have been reduced 97% since 2018.
