Have you looked into planting long-blooming perennials on the edges? I have catmint from Proven Winners. It blooms March to October. I can’t keep the bees out of it to trim it. I also have an ornamental spring onion that is not as well loved, but blooms continuously.

I've had some 3 year queens. I have one right now that came in a swarm in 2020, so I've had her 3 years, and I expect she overwintered, so thinking she's 4 years. She was laying sheets of brood this year. I raised some queens off her. Will be interesting to see how they perform.
