Glad you are covering this shot. I think a lot of players tend to avoid it. I think the spin makes it more difficult only because right spin is generally easier to aim towards the ghost ball with for up to 45 degree cut shots. Theres a cut off point after 45 and below 30 where added spin doesnt do much defection. But for this shot the ghost ball position of a left spin shot at medium or fast speed changes compared to a right spin shot at the same speed. The right spin ghost ball is an easier target to hit and thats why many players use it to aim at the true ghost ball spot and not the rail when shooting with power. The aiming system "hoss" comes to mind. Basically when shooting hard with spin you can aim at the opposite side of the pocket/rail compared to the english spin youre applying. Hard=Opposite. Slow=Same. So that just means if you are shooting slow and using left spin then you can aim more toward the left side of the pocket/ rail and vise versa. So in the times you missed the shot it may have been left spin and hitting slow and toward the right which didnt compensate for spin induced throw that happens with spin shots. This can leave someone as it did myself wondering where to aim if theres no side english and ive come to figure out its usually at the center of the pocket if hitting hard but with slower shots the far side of pocket seems to work best. I think speed control is one of the most important and over looked part of the game. Theres a guy who demostrates the "Hoss" spin aiming system on here on yt if you'd like to check it out.

Thank you for articulating your thorough explanation so well C. I had to watch the video again as it was published shortly after I began playing and needed to refresh my memory before answering your comment. Btw, since publishing the video, I’ve logged literally thousands more hours. Today, there are no cut-shots that present any issues for my game. What I’ve found is this. When putting in the time to shoot exercises and drills, a player develops a feel for the aim point depending on the english and speed they are applying. Here is a more up to date tutorial I published and would love to hear your take on it. (if you haven’t seen it already) This is a systematic approach to learning the physics of aiming with spin. This is exactly what I did to learn to aim with spin. Thank you and please see link below: How To Aim With Spin kzitem.info/news/bejne/yn93u5trjqqYY3o

Hey Ron, I have found on that shot I still use bottom left, but I use the edge of my tip instead of the quarter pad, half pad, etc, etc, of the tip. I find personally the cue ball reacts a lil wider coming off the rail. Hope that makes sense. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you!!!!

@@backyardbilliards101 amen to that. Even the shot in this video I will still miss. Currently, Scott Bacci has me performing a drill to make this shot a higher percentage make. This shot is very common so learning how to pocket it with draw/spin is critical for ones game. Other common shot/position scenarios should be handled the same way if a person expects to ramp up to another level.

You can. I would suggest shooting the yo yo drill by Niels Feijen. I would alter it somewhat by moving the object ball off the side cushion at a distance you struggle with. Give that a try and I think you’ll improve sooner.

try this drill. Object ball one ball's width off the rail on the third diamond. Cue ball on the foot/head spot. From that position make the cue ball hit every diamond up and down the opposite rail. This drill was taught to me by Jeremy Jones who got it from Shane Van Boening.

It's a lot easier to make that shot with a ld shaft. With the left spin you have to basically guess aim to the left of the object ball. Different speeds will cause the cue ball to deflect more or less. I've found to get the cue ball to come all the way back to where your standing, you have to put a ton of low left on it with a firm hit. Sorry for typing out a book here 😆
@ronthepoolstudent

It’s all good, it’s only a paragraph lol. You are 100% correct Josh on on a firm stroke. With tight pockets, it’s easy to rattle the ball as a result…the spin does aid however.

How tight are your pockets on your table? Sorry this doesn't sound right lol.. my table are pro cut diamond pockets i believe there 4.5" i honestly dont notice a difference what i notice is you have to hit the balls with perfect speed then the pockets are generous hit to fast they rattle out every time so it really takes a fine tuned finesse stroke on these diamond tables which surely i dont have lol.. one day though maybe i will get there..

Mine are 4 5/8” with 2” deep shelves and 155° cuts nick . The ball has to go in clean (at speed) or it will rattle.

@@ronthepoolstudent ohh i dont know what degree angle mines are or the depth lol whatever that technical stuff means. What ever diamond pro am tables specs are thats what i have. Now you make me feel like i have a kiddy beginner table lol.. as soon as i get a table with tight pockets people want to go even tighter making mines feel like valley table pockets lol unbelievable lol. Ive heard some pros playing on high 3" pockets im like forget that lol that would be frustrating no matter how good of a player you think you are to play on lol.. well idk if you have im sure you have played on a diamond table but these pockets do play tighter then they are i just dont notice or concentrate on the width of them i know when i miss on my table it was my fault not the tight pockets thats why i love the table its so true and doesn't lie to you if you shoot bad it tells you the truth its up to me to figure out the adjustments i need to make but in the end i think it will make a better more accurate player in the long run.. At first i was upset when i heard they started making pockets tighter i was like why its ruining the game.. but now i get it to me it wasnt about making the game harder as much as it was about making the player better and more precise thats just how i see it from an optimistic point of view. All i know is this is the first time in my life ive ever played on anything smaller then standard pockets on a 7-9ft table so its a learning curve.. but the side pockets are your best friend on this table and i hate side pocket shots so i have a lot of learning to do ive always feared side pocket shots not anymore lol and i love banks on my table its so fun..

Are you aiming this shot (shot you played in video) thinner than the center ball version due to squirt - you were using low left? If using inside, you’d aim a tad thicker?
@ronthepoolstudent

Wow John, I had to watch the video again and man was I a rookie back then. Today, that shot is a real hanger. What I know now but didn’t know back then, was how squirt and speed effected the shot. Since then, I’ve logged 5k+ hours so I now instinctually shoot the shot and subconsciously compensate. To better answer your question, here’s what I ended up doing to train myself. (If you haven’t seen the video linked below) I’m automatic now in that I totally understand my cue’s performance and know how to match up speed with spin and compensate for squirt.
