This is a more mature version of *Stone Soup.* As someone born in the '70's, I found it saddening of all the young mothers who'd not experienced true home cooking. I taught both my kids how to cook when they were 7 & 9. Fast food is not only picked up in a hurry...it's eaten that way too.

I love the simple meals videos.. And well, I have something for you :) In The Netherlands we have something called 'Stamppot Rauwe Andijvie' . That means mashed potatos with raw endive. It means that you cooked potatos and mashed it together with raw (washed and sliced Endive). If you are ritch enough you put some butter or milk and nutmeg in it...otherwise forget it. Another thing is to bake some cubed bacon and throw it in the pan. In The Netherlands we eat it with gravy and 'rookworst' but I can assure you that anything pork will do :)

Theo I love to hear about all the different foods y'all eat. Endive is another veggie I've never tried. I see it in the store but did not know what or how to cook it. I thought it may go in a salad as a type of lettuce. Now of course anything is good with bacon if you can afford it lol. And everything goes with mashed potatoes so it sounds tasty 😋

It was relaxing just to see you sitting at the fireside, Tessie. Our ancestors may have had to wait longer for their food as you said, but the benefits? Wow... time to rest and to *think*! I think one of the saddest things about fast food, fast driving and fast everything else is that we're deprived of the chance to savor the process of cooking, eating and actually *talking* with the people we're sharing a meal with! Or if we're driving 95 miles an hour, we have no chance to see the countryside we're roaring through! Years ago I bought a book to help us to have fun and to learn at the same time when we were homeschooling the kids. It was called "Life In The Slow Lane." (All about fun, interesting and historic places in our state to visit and still be back home on the same day.) This video is definitely about "Life In The Slow Lane." Which is a wonderful place to be! I'm sure that soup was delicious, and I bet Chevy Man loved it too. (P.S. Barley is great!)

I've used canned goods much older than that, and never had an issue. But twice recently I've had in-date canned cat food that was clearly not ok. I figure we were given eyes, nose and judgment to decide if food is safe to eat, and so far so good.

Do you have air vents on the bottom of your fire pit to give your fire oxygen? If you can find an old tub from a washing machine that no longer works( maybe hubby can find one for you and disassemble if from the machine) it would make a great fire pit because of all the holes! They also make great pots to plant in because of all the holes! Great soup, I could smell, it from here!
